Ex-King Sihanouk (pictured) has given his support to the Khmer Civilisation Foundation to build a small hospital to provide free treatment to the guards and the people living in the vicinity of the Preah Vihear temple complex.

Mr Moeung Son, president of the Khmer Civilisation Foundation, who has led an 8-member delegation to have an audience with the ex-king in the Royal Palace on Wednesday has told Radio Free Asia on Thursday that: “We presented him with a drawing of the planned hospital that we have applied to the Preah Vihear Authority and I have already received a phone call from Mr. Ang Soth (Chairman of Preah Vihear Authority) that he has approved the plan. We want to support the achievement of the present government which has overcome many obstacles in its efforts to list the Preah Vihear temple on the World Heritage List.”

He said that the building of the hospital will cost about US$20,000 with the money that will come from private donors. The planned hospital will have 5 rooms which will be built close to the areas where the people live and the Foundation plans to request the government to provide the medicines needed for the free treatment. Mr Moeung Son said that he plans to lead a delegation to visit the area, after the ex-king and the Preah Vihear Authority had given their approval.

Deputy PM Hor Namhong has told the media on the issue of Preah Vihear on the 8th of July that: “The successful listing of the Preah Vihear temple on the World Heritage List is a victory for the present government. But more importantly, it is a victory for the Khmer civilisation.”

The World Heritage Committee has, on 7th of July, approved the listing of the Preah Vihear temple as a World Heritage Site in its 32nd meeting in Quebec in Canada.

According to documents from the Royal Cambodian Academy, Preah Vihear temple, which was built in the 11th century, was judged to be belonged to Cambodia by the International Court of Justice in The Hague on the 15th of June 1962.

Sihanouk has to ensure security for his siblings. He doesn't care about Khmer people in Issan province or peace in the region.

Good idea! We all should united. Even though we have different political believe but in term of National interest we should think about United. We cannot develop Preah Vihear site without the necessary infrastructure like, Hospital, School, access road, clean water, and develop the economy system at the area. We support everyone who committed to develop our below motherland. We're Khmer proud of our ancestry who build the unique temple for us and the human in this world but not include the extremist Siam nationalists who don't understand what the international law is. However, don’t cares about them let them practice their jungle law as they did as usual.

Sihanouk is not the PM. The security of the Khmer people is the responsibility of the PM. It is good that he has shown great interests in the Preah Vihear issue by supporting the building of a hospital there. Regarding the issue of the Issan people, or Chhav Issan in Thai, which is a less pleasant term or derogatory term to be exact, is a term that the Thai people use to call the Khmer and Laotians living in northeast Thailand, is a dilemma for the Cambodian government. These people have lived under the Thai control for centuries and have lived prosperously and I don't believe that they wanted to live under the control of the Cambodian government. If they wanted to live under Cambodia's control, they never showed it. Unlike the Khmer Krom who struggled hard with Vietnam, the Khmer Surin or Khmer Issan chose to remain subservient to the Thai.

go khmer go! we cannot isolate preah vihear area any longer like in the past. isolation will make thailand want to claim it thinking we don't take care of itor forgot about it. just because cambodia was preoccupied with civil conflict and the KR atrocity doesn't give thailand the right to disrespect the icj verdict. congratulations for doing something about this area and please continue to push for modern development for this northern area of preah vihear province. god bless cambodia.

next, should be airport, hotels, schools, a large market, some permanent highway leading up to this area. this is very important if cambodia to protect preah vihear temple and our distance territories. please remember to never keep any area isolated for too long.

9:03 AM,
The airport to preah vihear has been planned already, the roads to preah vihear are in the process of construction and the Indian company is proposing to build a cable car from the Cambodian side to bring tourists up to the temple. No need to enter the temple from the Thai side any more.

That is true. We have plane everything before you said. Soon preah Vihear temple will be second biggest tourists destination after Siem Reap.

9:41 AM, good idea. i for one will contribute. the govt. should give the lands near preah vihear for free to make more people settle there, build hospital, roads, markets, towns. overseas people and rich Cambodians inside the country can help with some of the financing through voluntary donations.

All people, including those living in remote areas, must have equal access to quality basic health services.
But the construction of Health infrastrucutres must be based on the population size, the geographical area and the geograhical accessibility.

Do we need to build a Hospital to sreve a mall number of people? Will health staff have enough work to do to improve their skill and help people?

Yes People there do need health services. We must build health facility the size of wich and the activities must be conformed with the population size and people need.
Or we must send a regular motivated medical team to take care of our compatriots leaving there.
The Ministry of Health (if it's not a " YES YES Ministry")should give a clear advice on this matter.
