Thai Historian: I think the situation is hopeless. They (PAD) are burning down the forest just to get rid of one big [political] rat

[Thai] Historian Pessimistic over temple crisis

July 24, 2008
The Nation

Southeast Asian studies expert, historian and former rector of Thammasat University Charnvit Kasetsiri talks to The Nation's Pravit Rojanaphruk about the feud between Thailand and Cambodia over Preah Vihear Temple that is threatening to turn ugly. Excerpts:

What do you think of the sudden frenzy of ultra-nationalistic feeling among Thais over the past weeks?

I see it as a very sad case. It's a reversal of the development wheel which turned the [Indo-China] battlefield into a market place and looks very dangerous. The second observation is that on one hand it is escalating into a serious conflict between Thailand and Cambodia and on the other hand it's worsening Thai domestic politics, which is already complicated. It might be the last straw before a calamity.

What calamity are you referring to?

Calamity in the sense that society is coming to the end of an era. Strange enough, considering that Preah Vihear and Phanom Rung, which was recently vandalised, are both involved. [Hindu God] Shiva would dance the dance of destruction and destroy everything. Vishnu would spring out of a lotus with Brahma the God of creation in there and Brahma would recreate a new order. I think it symbolises the end of an era. Preah Vihear is a black hole and a lot of people will go up there and fall down the Mor E-Daeng cliff.

Isn't it surprising to you that many Thai protesters may have never visited the temple or even paid any interest to its history?

For politicians and de facto politicians, they discovered that Preah Vihear is very useful and effective because most people from the generations who're now in their 50s to 80s grew up under an intense nationalistic campaign [by Thai state] of the 1940s to the 70s. That's why the issue is so effective.

When we lost Preah Vihear in 1962, people in more than 50 provinces staged protests and contributed one baht each.

They were made to believe that Thailand would win the case [at the World Court] 300 per cent. That's why it was a shock for the Thai public.

So it's a psychological problem and a wounded history and that's why it can ignite right away. We don't listen to any reasoning or any explanation at all.

We don't even think that King Chulalongkorn agreed with France in 1904 and 1907 to trade Siem Reap, Preah Vihear and other areas for what today is the central eastern provinces of Thailand. We don't look back at that part of history anymore. This year Trat province is celebrating its 101st year of its return to Thailand.

Some are saying the issue, fuelled by the People's Alliance for Democracy, is bringing out the worse in Thai nationalistic sentiment. Do you see any difference between patriotism and ultra-nationalism?

In Thai I use the expressions rak chart [love for one's country] and klang chart [infatuated about one's nation]. Love is a good thing but madness is no good.

Madness leads us into all kinds of trouble and we'll go down the black hole.

The current frenzy has nothing to do with local people in Si Sa Ket province [where Preah Vihear is situated on the border]. This is a very urban nationalism.

Any advice to the Samak Sundaravej administration or the anti-government PAD?

Well, I don't know. I'm very pessimistic. I see almost no way out.

I have suggested that we should get the two governments to sit and create a peace land there - no-man's land.

[As for the PAD] I don't think they will listen to me. I think the situation is hopeless. They are burning down the forest just to get rid of one big [political] rat.

Before you look at Thai history, May be you should look further that Khmer Empire was there first. Most Temples were build by Khmer and Khmer King. It is so sad most Khmer lives many provinces in Thailand from one generation to another didn't realized and recognized that their ancestors were Khmer people. Now they transform them self to Thai nationality.Look down their own kind. Hope with peace with our troops in Preah Vihear border.

your comment is right, PDA burn the forest to rid a rat (they play the ultra-nationalist to get the power. PDA never care the economic crisis, civil people and soldier life who lost with their game!!

This is a part of the political card we have to play to eradicate the corrupted leaders, although the action will have economic repercussion on both sides of the nations (Thailand and Cambodia). That said, I'd also encourage and suggest the similar group or groups to spur a similar action in Cambodia -- in fact, this is the only mechanism you have to combat the rampant and endempic corruption.

Professor, overall, I laud your views, quite reasonable, but no, the area can't be turned into a no-man land inside cambodia. Oh, yes, we can swap that plot by turning Surin into a no-man land, too.

Anonymous said...

Thank for your comment on the Thai history. But don't forget, Cambodians received a bitter history. Thai took many part of Cambodia. As the evidences, Surin, Si sa ket provinces... used to be Cambodia. Do you think there is any psychological problem for Cambodians. Cambodia lost a lot. In 1962, Cambodia can get back only a small piece of land and a temple on it, you said it is a psychological problem for Thai.
It is impossible for the no-man's land solution for this piece of land.

The territory is belong to Cambodia. Cambodians have to live on it and develop it

Prove it that it belongs to Cambodia and not Issan province.

Yes not Issan Province because People in Issan Province were the slave of Khmer people in Cambodia and now they become the slave of Thai and Chi8nese

Answeare to the pressor

(1).The profssor is right for come in to the conclusion that he do not wanted a worse relation between the two nations. He is quite right but one THING HE SHOULD THINKS OF IS THE PEACE OF MIND AND RECOGNISED THAT WHAT HAD HAPPENED IN THE PAST.

(2).In the past Siem are invaded Cambodia and they get many province belong to us such as SURIN, SISAKET, THONBORY, CHANBOREY,NORKOR REACHSEYMA,SISOPON, SIEM REAP, BATTAM BANG, AND MLOUPREY,.....ETC.

In that time they , agreed to give it back to Cambodia when we have the protectorate by France. These province included : Siem Reap, Battambang, Mlou Prey( Preash Vihear to day)after the siem colonial 100 years. It also have contract with Khmer that after 100 year they have to give it back to Cambodia.

Thus history show that even we get those land back but we are still hurt as some province of khmer are under Thai controled to day it is Sisaket, Surin, Borey Ram, Chan Borey,....etc. Thus Now we just get our land for development but Siem, Serey rin Thorn and many of your politcal make it burn it and block our development or now even THAI PEOPLE CREATED HISTORY THAT PREASH VIHEAR IS THER ANCHESTOR BUILT, IT IS SO SO SAD ABOUT THE POLITCI TO SWALLOW OUR LAND. The LAND AT PREASH VIHEAR IN THE VILLAGE OF KANTHATRALAK, ONE OF THE WIFE NAME OF TH EX. LORD GOVERNOR OF BATTAMBANG.

So I thinks that if we wanted peace let our people go to see the history back and what you have done in the past and what Thai should do it now ! Is recognition that PREASH VIHEAR IS PURED KHMERE NO THAI BLOOD.

PREASH VIHEAR WAS BUILT around 11-12 century which that time no Thai at all in the SOVANNAPOUM, The China called , FUNAN, Cambodia called the KING OF THE MOUNTAIN.

YOU ARE THAI SHOULD LET YOUR KIDS READ MORE BOOK THAT IS NOT A THAI FACK CREATED HISTORY, THE REAL BOOK THAT RESEARCH AND DONE BY MALAYSIA, INDONESIA, REAL KHMER EXPERT...ETC. THUS WE ARE NOT CONFUSION ABOUT WHO IS WHO ?

And put collor on our people that is the owner of the temple.

I see some of your new wriiter they are not clear and using decoying on Khmer as korm, or korm not khmer ...etc This is show that they are wanted to created some thins which is not true .

The world research they are very clear that who is who , even Vietname they said it land is belong to Champa before and part of it belong to Cambodia. Thus Cambodia they do not angry them because they knew who is owner.

Now even KHMER IN SURIN THEY ARE STILL HAVE TALK IN KHMER WE ARE SAD AS THAI POLITIC TODAY. FUTURE IF LIKE THESE OUR COUNTRY IS NOT SAFE AND WE WENT IN TO WAR....thus how we can living in peace is the best.

Dear Compatriots,

I believe that the UN Security Council, the Big Five, will not come out with any concrete measures to solve the military standoff. They will just issue a recommendation for Cambodia and Thailand to solve the problem bilaterally and peacefully.

Without fighting militarily, I believe the US or other Big Four will not agree to have this problem solved by the UN. The US is opposing the UN's role in the dispute. ASEAN will not be able to solve this problem as Thailand will take chairmanship soon.

However, I hope this standoff can be solved peacefully if the Thais withdraw its troops from Cambodia's territory.

There you have my Khmer compatriots, there is no need to put the blame of ignorance on our Khmer brothers in Thailand. No need to create this false sense of disunity that the PAD wants. Our people everywhere in the world have the same heart, Khmer love Khmer and support Khmer. I am sure deep down in their heart that they do not show in public, they are proud that Cambodia had listed Preah Vihear in UNESCO.

For the person who keeps asking to prove the provinces belong to Thai, I have challenge in return to answer your request. You go to to Preah Vihear, Phnom Rung, Phimai and all the provinces of Thailand that have ancient temple and come back to me with your understanding of the inscriptions. If you can read it case close, your temple. But you'll find that you going to need a lesson in Khmer language.

The proof as they say, is written in stone. You on the other hand, prove that Thailand heritage didn't belong to Khmer people.

to the individual that keeps writing in caps, i can tell you as another Khmer your idea is very ugly. It is an eyesore so whatever message you want to say already get pass by many readers. I suggest you use normal format next time. EYESORE. HOPE YOU DON"T MIND ME JUST TELLING THE TRUTH THAT IS ALL. BUT THE TRUTH CAN JUST BE SO ANNOYING ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU HAVE TO READ SOMETHING THIS MESSY

Thailand, Cambodia to meet over disputed land

Cambodia's Information Minister Khieu Kanharith speaks to the media during a news conference in Phnom Penh July 24, 2008. Cambodia accused Thailand on Thursday of sending more troops to their joint border as a smoldering dispute over a 900-year-old temple showed no signs of easing.

By KER MUNTHIT,
Associated Press Writer

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia - Cambodia has agreed to meet Monday with Thailand to discuss a stretch of disputed land near a historic temple, rather than take the matter to the U.N. officials from both countries said Thursday.

Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej said he talked to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and the two leaders decided to schedule a foreign ministers' meeting in the Cambodian city of Siem Reap on Monday.

They plan to discuss how best to end the crisis over land near the 11th century temple of Preah Vihear that led both countries to deploy soldiers near the site.

Cambodian Information Minister Khieu Kanharith confirmed the meeting would take place and "postpone the complaint to the Security Council."

Monday's meeting follows failed efforts earlier this week to resolve the crisis, which prompted Cambodia to take the issue to the U.N. Security Council.

Military tensions between the two countries over 1.8 square miles of land intensified earlier this month after UNESCO approved a Cambodian application to have the temple designated a World Heritage Site.

Thailand sent troops to the border July 15 after anti-government demonstrators attacked Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej's government for supporting Cambodia's application. It claims they were deployed only after 1,000 Cambodian troops were spotted in the area. The troops were protecting a demining team, which was sent there after a Thai soldier stepped on a land mine, officials said.

The announcement would seem to be a small diplomatic victory for Thailand, which had rejected Cambodian requests to involve the U.N. and the grouping of Southeast Asian nations in the matter. Thailand's U.N. ambassador, Don Pramudwinai, accused Cambodia on Wednesday of bringing the quarrel before the Security Council because "the Cambodian target is not only Preah Vihear but the entire common border."

Cambodian says some 4,000 troops from both countries are massed in the area around Preah Vihear. Thailand says it has 400 troops in the area and that Cambodia has 1,700.

Don said Cambodia was trying to force Thailand to accept a French colonial map's demarcation of the border.

Thailand relies on a different map drawn up later with American technical assistance, but accepts a ruling by the International Court of Justice that awarded the disputed temple to Cambodia in 1962.

Singapore criticizes Thailand-Cambodia border dispute, says UN unnecessary

By CHRISTOPHER BODEEN,
Associated Press Writer AP -

SINGAPORE - Singapore's foreign minister said Thursday a border dispute that recently flared between Thailand and Cambodia should never have become a problem, and it was unnecessary to take it to the U.N. Security Council.

Speaking as host of Southeast Asia's main security conference, George Yeo suggested that Cambodia's decision to refer the spat to the United Nations may have been premature. Yeo said the two countries should focus instead on promoting tourism and shelve their differences.

"It should not have to go to U.N. Security Council," Yeo said at a news conference following the Association of Southeast Asian Nations' annual security meeting. "It was not a problem, even a few weeks ago. It suddenly became a problem."

Yeo's comments came as the military standoff over the disputed border territory entered a second week, with Thailand accusing Cambodia of eyeing even more of its land and leaflets appearing in the Cambodian capital calling for a boycott of Thai goods.

On Tuesday, Cambodia asked the U.N. Security Council to intervene in the dispute over land near the ancient temple of Preah Vihear, warning that the two sides were at "an imminent state of war."

Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong said he had no choice but to appeal to the United Nations after discussions with Thailand on Monday failed to produce a breakthrough.

In a countermove Wednesday, Thailand's ambassador to the United Nations, Don Pramudwinai, said Cambodia was bringing the quarrel before the Security Council because "the Cambodian target is not only Preah Vihear but the entire common border."

The dispute over 1.8 square miles (4.6 square kilometers) of land near Preah Vihear escalated this month when UNESCO approved Cambodia's application to have the temple complex named a World Heritage Site.

Thailand sent troops to the border July 15 after anti-government demonstrators attacked Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej's government for supporting Cambodia's UNESCO application. They claim the temple's new status will undermine Thailand's claim to land around the temple. Cambodia responded with its own troop deployment.

Cambodia is preparing to hold national elections on Sunday, with some commentators suggesting a resolution may be more likely after the polls when the media and political glare subsides.

Yeo reiterated ASEAN's call for restraint, saying: "Both sides are being watched."

"Both sides should promote tourism, and it's something we should enhance in Southeast Asia as a whole, not become a source of conflict between two countries," he said.

On Thursday, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the United States will be guided by the views of Southeast Asian countries in assessing the border dispute if it comes up for mediation in the U.N. Security Council.

All Thai historians are bias and ethnocentric. They speak for the benefits of Thais and Thailand. Almost Thai’s writers editorialized to Thai benefits, only two Bangkok Post writers have written about the Thai-Cambodia conflict in a fair, neutral, and balance way.

Thai’s historian, academician, and intellectuals need to understand that their opinions and editorials are read by most of the Cambodians oversea. Their opinions and editorials are weight by their validity and accuracy in none bias and none ethnocentric means.

From what I have read in Bangkok and the Nation, most opinions and editorial as well as news are bias and one-sided news.

I hope that today Thailand will do better when it comes to fair, neutral, and balance journalism.

The Thaicong desperately want to get American involves in their quest to break international law and order!

There is no such map with American technical assistance!

Thaicong-Cambodian conflict must be solved through third party which base on international law, international map, and recognize by international community!

Otherwise war! The Thaicong will pay with blood for every square inch of land they are taking from Cambodian people!

If sure thai is not scare of anything. But it very foolish for the thai to do anything that is wrong. Act of aggression and bullying is not the way nowaday especially for a small and pathetic country who sell noodles, fish sausce, and pad thai.

Its not in the 1800, 1900 anymore. And plus the thai economy already in deep shit. So, if anything, the thai is just making worst for their economy.

How pathetic it is. There is a term " pride before the fall ". The fall is coming soon for the thai.

Now HUN SEN is mad he is also claiming the 4.6km2 is part of Preah Vihear Temple also.

Thai is a looser big time.

The international is already knew that place belong to Cambodia too.

If they think there is something wrong they should have claim them way back in early 1900's. Why now!

It is too late for the Thai because naturally, proofs and evidences are proof to be belong to Khmer.

Now I hope HUN SEN stir up those Khmer living in Thailand to rise up and reclaim the rest of the provinces back.

Jayo! Khmer Eternity!!

There is no peace if one of the camps do not want the peace!

The troops thais settled down on the Khmer territory and begin to strengthen their position: the troops thais do not withdraw!
It is necessary to see the reality in front.

The thailande already gets ready for the war with Cambodia!
Do not made to much illusion on the issue of the meeting of the UNO’s Security Council. It will be powerless words in front of the thai’s intransigence . The bilateral negotiations, they are only political labourers to sound the will of the other camp to make or not the war.

It is necessary to know that the bastard thais’s king faced at the moment a crisis of legitimacy of his authority. This king supported coup d'état knocking down ex-Prime Minister Thashinawatra . Thashin and his partisans are again on returning to the power in thailande now.

The thailande also faces as all the countries capitalist a large-scale economic crisis.
The thailande also faces the guerrilla warfare of the Muslims in the South who fight for their autonomy.

The temptation is big for this king's bastard, his clan and his corrupt military to find the outlet to diver all the dissatisfactions which rise and the civil war: it is the aggression against our country Cambodia.

A military victory against our country even temporary will give the prestige to this bastard king and his military.
The thai’s political opposition which tries to negotiate peacefully with Cambodia will be eliminated in that case .

And so the war is unavoidable!

We have to all unite and we have to all get ready for this aggression.

To defend our homeland is that we have to do.
To live in the dignity and to die in the honor it is our motto.

The children of the khmer homeland, our day of glory came!
