[Thai] Locals threaten to take over disputed Preah Vihear Temple

July 10, 2008
The Nation

A group of residents in Si Sa Ket province have threatened to take over the disputed temple of Preah Vihear within a month in an expression of their anger over its listing as a World Heritage site.

The group - calling themselves the Council of Saha Drammic I-san and staging a protest close to the temple over the past weeks - yesterday declared they would take over the temple unless the authorities removed some 500 Cambodians from the area.

They also called on the governments of Thailand and Cambodia to speed up the demarcation of the border within 30 days to mark a clear division of sovereignty.

The government should make the Preah Vihear issue a national priority to reclaim the Hindu temple from Cambodia, as the then foreign minister Thanat Khoman reserved to the right to do so at the United Nations in 1962, they said.

"The government should call a national referendum of Thai people, who have the right of national sovereignty over the temple," they said in a statement.

The Preah Vihear ruling by the International Court of Justice in 1962 stated that the temple was situated in Cambodia, but many Thais believe that it belongs to Thailand as the then government announced its disagreement with the decision.

The group blamed the current government for causing loss of Thai sovereignty, as the Cabinet failed to block Cambodia's application for the site's listing.

The Constitution Court on Tuesday ruled that the joint communiqu้ which Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama signed with Cambodia's Deputy Prime Minister Sok An to support the application was unconstitutional.

Senators and the opposition plan to impeach the foreign minister and the Cabinet. The Democrat Party's Sathit Wongnongteoy yesterday sought details of the Cabinet's resolution in order to identify all the officials involved.

Noppadon is due to arrive back from London today. Reporters at the ministry saw the minister's close aide packing his belongings at the office, suggesting he might step down.

Interior Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung said the government had done nothing wrong, since the Cabinet had withdrawn the joint communiqu้ of support before the Constitution Court's ruling.

The People's Alliance for Democracy has called for the entire nation to stand against Noppadon.

Army chief Anupong Paochinda made a plea to people to calm down, as fanning nationalism over the temple might jeopardise relations with Cambodia.

"We should allow reason and the law to settle this case, not emotion," he said.

Please just give it up and let us all rest in peace.

Our King-Father Norodom Sihanouk has clarified in his communique the reasons why Preah Vihear belongs to Cambodia.

It is time for His Majesty Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand to put an end to this issue in a brotherly gesture.

To Thais:

Thailand must accept the reality; the Khmer History. It is the failure of your government and your kings who have cheated you from being educated the true history, otherwise; you won’t be ashamed.

The world has learnt the history of the Khmer that is why Preak Vihear has been listed as a World Heritage site without any objection.

The Preak Vihear now is the property of the world, though it is situated in the territory under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

Thus Thais must stop your insane behaviors and bury all your greediness a way.

Take Over Preah Vihear!!!!!

This is another new provocation by the Thais. It is their policy of expansionism and war-mongering policy. It is backed by the Thai Government from a secret corner.

Don't demand so much, my younger bother Thais. you have stollen a lot from us.

We, pure blood khmers, have a limited patience. We would rather die than see Khmer-Thais taking over Preah Vihear for the Siam control.

To Khmer-Thais, Let your brothers live in peace, or else we will struggle for our own peace.

It is time for His Majesty Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand to tell the Thais people the reality or The Thais will always be crazy with ambitions of taking every inch of land of Cambodia.

Thai King, You SHOULD DO GOOD DEED FOR HUMANITY. SAVE SOME GOOD DEED FOR YOUR NEXT WORLD.

You, Thais, have always caught fishes in the TROUBLE WATER of Cambodia. You gained a great deal for centuries from Cambodia.

The world, now, know Cambodia very well, and even know you, the THAIS / SIAMS much better.

So, it is now very hard to change the reality in the heart and mind of the world.

Stop your provocation against Cambodia.

Oh.... I'm amazed with these educated Khmers.

Remember, Thaksin buy you Phrea Vihear.

Oh, really? Idiot,3:38 PM.

Hahaha...silly Thais trying to take back something that wasn't really theirs to begin with.

Seriously, you Thais wanna try and attempt to take back Preah Vihear? Well, go ahead, but you will be further humiliated in the process. Cambodians aren't afraid to stand up and give a fight when provoked to a certain point. Keep that in mind.

It is time for Siam king to say something to calm down the situation. If he does not do that, means he want to make war ithin his country and with Cambodia. Go ahead please.

I think the Thais should focus more on stabilizing the Muslim majority in the very most southern part of Thailand than trying to make pathetic claims over Preah Vihear and attempt to protest the World Heritage site.

Siam king needs to calm his people down or else it will get ugly.

To some of the confused Khmer Surin folks: Quit pretending to be or try to emulate the Siam people. They look down on you guys and you will always be ah Kamen to them. You are and will always be 2nd rate or 3rd rate to them so quite trying to pretend you are Siam. Stand up and be Khmer.

Cheyo pathet Kampuchea!

I am waiting to eat their livers. I am stand guard right at the temple.

When they want to stage a protest to remove the residents there it is violate severeignty of Cambodia.

Not let alone that the Thai let them do it. I know it is their right but if they cross border Khmer's have the right to retaliate or kill them right on the spot.

Ok, thais idoit come and claim the temple...and bring your own coffin...you are just a bunch of fool...you are coward just like your king that rarely show up in public...cos someone from you people just waiting to assasinate him...

Come on coward, bring your flesh and livers...I will eat everyone of you and drink your warm blood.

How dare you want to claim the temple!

For The Unreasonable Thais People: Please don't be a sore loser, just give it up; no matter what you're planning to do, you can't win on this one and it will further embarassed your nation even more.

I'm not against all the Thais people, there are good and bad people everywhere.

What a shameless attempt by Thailand?

Who I-San and what is its history with Khmer Kingdom? What is Si Sa Ket?

Hun Sen and his government have to put more troop to Preah Vihear before these thugs secretely sent by Bhumibol mess up the Khmer Temple. The land surrounding the Temple area should take it back.

It is a good new that Khmer King, KIng Sihamoni will attend the Olympic to meet China Pre. he can do something about it to end the Thai aggression. They need to respect the law.

An anecdote in Cambodia's history

PREAH VIHEAR
How Thailand accepted the verdict of the International Court of Justice date 15 June 1962
according to Dr. Han Li-wu, Ambassador of the Republic of China to Thailand, 1956-64

'My friendly relations with Marshal Sarit [Thanarat], Thanom [Kittikachorn] and Praphart [Charusathien] grew so close, especially with Sarit, that I became, so to speak, his personal consultant in international relations. Let me tell you an anecdote. Thailand and Cambodia had a dispute over the sovereignty of a hill, called Kao Phra Vihan, on their border. They submitted the case to the Word Court for adjudication, and I was warned by the Chinese judge in the court that Thailand might lose. I warned the Thai government, but they did not show much interest. They were overconfident. After they had lost the case, the Cabinet was split over the question of accepting the verdict. The Cabinet was meeting practically every day, Marshal Sarit having, at the time, taken over the prime ministership after a successful operation.

'One morning, Sarit went to the airport to see off a state guest, and I, as Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, was there as well. After the guest had left, I shook Sarit's hand and asked why he looked so sombre. He said, "Kao Prah Vihan, Kao Prah Vihan, every day! Headaches!" At once I said, "Marshal, why should you worry?" He looked at me with astonishment. "Accept the verdict.". I continued, "and close the road to Prah Viharn. How are the Cambodians to go up the hill from their side, which has no road and is the steep side of the hill? "At once he got the point and repeated the question, "How could they go up the hill?" with a broad smile. He summoned a Cabinet meeting, announced his decision to accept the verdict and closed the only road to the hill on the Thai side.'

The Khmer in Issan province must not rest until the Temple go back to Issan Province. It does not belong to the monkeys in Cambodia.

2:08...it's people like you who love to bitch about everything, even when things are done for the greater good. The Siam don't give a shit about you you Khmers in Issan and it's sad to see most of you Khmers in Issan making yourselves thinking that you are Siam. At the end of the day, you are nothing to the Siam but a poor Kamen. To the Siam, from their persepective, they would never ever consider Preah Vihear belonging to Khmers in Issan or even Khmers in general.

These Thai people are brained wash to believe the land belong to them, but in fact the land they are demanding is the land that never their in the first place. Thai people must seek the truth beyond their nationalist's scope and biased news medias. Cambodia is will to fight this 4.6km in the World Court again So the Thai people have nothing more to say.

yes, i like the idea that called for a clear demarcation the borderline between cambodia and thailand and it such be based on the 1904 - 1907 treaty and the icj verdict for us khmer people to see justice to it. otherwise, there is still no justice for cambodia. really and seriously, the siamese -franco treaty of 1904 - 1907 and the icj verdict must be taken seriously by thailand, otherwise there is no justice for cambodia. i say it again and again...

Dear some Thai neighbors ! Stop being crazy with Preah Vihear.
Preah Vihear belongs to Cambodia. Now it is 21st century and you
cannot do anything to us like before. There is ASEAN; there is the UN and Thailand and Cambodia are the UN members. We as Cambodians do not want to look into the past because if we look into the past we cannot live peacefully with the Thais. We knew that we had lost a lot of our land to the Thais in the past, but we are trying to forget this. For the time being we just want what is left after Franco-Siam Treaty in 1907. So the Thai should recognize this fact. Based on Franco-Siam Treaty in 1907, Preah Vihear is located in Cambodian territory.

We have heard that some Thai extremists want to fight and take over Preah Vihear. That sound uncivilized at all ! The world knows that Thailand is a civilized society, so the Thai should behave in the civilized manner rather than in a barbarous manner.

May Cambodian and Thai people live peacefully !
