King Father on Preah Vihear issue

Thursday, 10 July 2008
Unofficial Translation from French
Written by The Phnom Penh Post

Communique from Norodom Sihanouk

Phnom Penh, 8 July 2008

I. Certain journalists are writing that the main entrance to the Preah Vihear temple faces Thailand and not Cambodia.

II. The Thais have said, say and have written and write that one of the “proofs” of Thai ownership of Preah Vihear is constituted by the fact that access to the temple is infinitely more easy from the Thai side rather than from the Cambodian side.

III. These journalists and these Thais seem to ignore the following historic facts, ones which amply prove that the mountain and the temple of Preah Vihear are 100% Cambodian and belong 100% to Cambodia.

a/. The construction (10th and 11th centuries) of Preah Vihear by two successive Khmer Kings and is a purely Khmer work.

b/. The mountain and the temple of Preah Vihear could be found, during the 10th and 11th centuries, “very much in the interior” of Kampuchea, in the Khmer Empire, of which the borders extended for hundreds of kilometers, to the north, the east and west, much further than the current Cambodian borders with Thailand and Laos.

As a consequence, the mountain and the Preah Vihear temple could be found not on the Cambodia-Siam (Thai) border but “deep in the interior” of the Kingdom (of the Khmer Empire) and the “main entrance” of Preah Vihear “looked” not towards Siam (Thailand) but to Kampuchea.

c/. The International Court in the Hague, which in 1962, rendered justice to Cambodia, did not ignore all this, and let me, once again, offer them a respectful and admiring homage.

d/. Thanks to Khmer Sovereignty and the Khmer empire (Angkorian in particular) , present day Thailand is very rich in Angkorian style Khmer temples and monuments.

[It is] absolutely wrong and gives proof to the meanness, which, in Thailand, causes to Cambodia and its people undeserved and anachronistic troubles concerning the temple of Preah Vihear, instead of devoting ourselves to the harmonious and fruitful development of our friendship and our (authentic) brotherhood (Thai-Cambodian).

His Majesty's comments are deserve merits. Thailand and Cambodia must learn to live in harmony as we are so alike. It seems like we are from the same parents.

Thank you for giving a say in this matter, Your Majesty. You have always been the best. Down to all ah Nan Chao Siems who stubbornly refuse to be good neighbors.

2:20 PM, You are so much doctrinated by Siam Ideology. The Khmers are not bad by their names and spirit, BUT YOUR INDIVIDUAL is an exception.

The Siams are setting Khmer brothers against Khmers. We pure khmers always have sympathy with Khmer-Thais.

No worry. We will reunite in the future. The listing of Preah Vihear as the world heritage site is a good point to start our brotherhood.

A lot of Khmer Blood Thais still speak khmer in Surin Province of Thailand. This is a sign that Khmer Blood survive, just waiting the time to reunite.

3:07,

I'm khmer too. I just want to say that Khmer Srins do not really like us. They are brain-washed by thais. They think we are not khmers from angkorean empire. of course, that is absurd. But, what I want to say, don't expect khmer surins to do something for us. as I heard, some of them even are joining the protest against our temple registration. They are brain-washed, some of them don't realize that they are discrimimated by thais. Poor them.

Stupid Siam. Stop trying to rewrite history, as you know the truth will always prevail. The world is not stupid. We make decisions based on facts and not on emotions. Everybody knows that Khmer Kings built Preah Vihear and many great other temples you stole from us and trying to them your own.

I'm Thai and teaching at Chulalongkorn University. Of course, I love my country, but I hate extremist. Prah Viharn belongs to Cambodia(the descent of Khmer empire). It's the truth. Congratulation for having your temple registered.

By the way, from my teaching experience, I find that Thai students are really fooled by extremist politicians. I always think that how my country future will be if her next generations are like this.

Thanks 3:58PM

Not all of Khmer Surins hate us. Only some of Them. this was due to the fact that they live on the other side of the border where SIAM brain-washed them. Anyway,I drean that one day they will seperate themselves from the THAIS. Nobody Knows the future.

4:17 PM:

It's true...not all Khmer Surins hate the Khmer in Cambodia. Most of the Khmer Surin in those provinces bordering northern Cambodia are very poor and lack proper schooling and if they are able to acquire some education, the majority of it is taught through Thai-biased history where everything is extremely biased.

Also, a good portion of Khmer Surin look up to the Thais and attempt to emulate them and at times find themselves losing their identity and this results in an identity. crisis. A lot of Thais look down on the Khmer Surin as 2nd rate or even 3rd rate so it's common for most Khmer Surin to pretend they are Thai. And as time goes by, they forget that they are actually Khmer Surin. it's pretty sad.

However, not all Khmer Surin are like this. Some still keep the culture, language and traditions alive and still consider themselves Khmer, but they just happen to be on the other side of the border.

Hopefully, one day the Khmer kandal, Khmer surin and Khmer krom can be reunited. Most likely it's unlikely...sadly to say.

Khmer surin and Krom Krom should become an independant country.

4:10...Thank you

Don't take personally the harsh things people say in here about Thai people. There are bad and good people in every nationality.

All of this animosities came about from lack of understanding. In every nationality, you can't change ignorant people and also it's wrong to hate them.

2:20PM. Show respect to His Majesty Norodom Sihanouk whoever you are. His Majesty Bhumibol and many of his high ranking men still secretely admire Khmer King, King Norodom Sihanouk. Believe it or not King Bhumibol and the Royal Thai family communicate in Khmers. Because the Royal Thai family have so much respect to the Kings of Khmer Empire.

finally, former King has made some sense. Thank you.

all khmer people have been asking for is to have King advocate for his people and nation. Not leading us to abyss.

Anonymous said...

King Sihanouk did not lead Khmers to abyss, but you Khmers are too slow to understand the problems, you are being doctrinated by the enemy propaganda about him. Dumb people like you deserve nothing such as Preah Viheah. Such as sacred pleace should have not been allowed to be touched or smelled by your dumb monkeys.

9:24 PM:

We Cambodians know who former King Sihanouk is and his behaviors and intentions were when he an active player in Cambodia's political limelight. In the late 1950's and throughout the 1960's, Sihanouk's Sangkum Restr Niyum undoubtedly carried Cambodia through modernization and stability. He had great goals for Cambodia and at the time he wanted Cambodia to progress and see it prosper.

However, due to political idealogical polarization in the world during the Cold War, Sihanouk flip-flopped Cambodia in international arena because he wanted Cambodia to be neutral but also appease to his neighbors as well as leaning back and forth towards those who think will come out as victors all at the same time.

At the end, Cambodia became a pawn of war and dug itself deeper into a hole because no one, including the Khmer Republic leaders could turn Cambodia away from the point of no return. At the end, Sihanouk was fated and doom already, even before he can make any decisions. And any decisions he made would result in him from choosing between several evils.

Sihanouk had his chance in the 1960's to forecast what was happening to Cambodia and perhaps steer the nation away from heading towards destruction, but he was way to obsessed with power and was never very consistent.

The late 1960's was a pivotal time in Cambodia's history and Sihanouk miscalculated his decisions and his forecasting of the future and as a result, Cambodia spiraled into near oblivion. When he was taken out of power by the Khmer Republic leaders, he even helped further damage Cambodia because of his hatred and strong need for revenge which blinded him.

yes, i my ex-king, king-grandfather is right as he was there to see the icj verdict. i totally and wholehearted agree with my Som Dek Ta. they can not say that access is most easily negotiable from thailand, where the real map of the 1904 - 1907 treaty shown clearly that thailand unilaterally redrew the map even after the icj verdict so novice journalists or young journalists can be misled to think like this. thus some people who knew nothing about the case can say something like: look accessibility is only possible from thailand side, so cambodia should not keep preah vihear, or the other ignorant writing i read goes something like this: cambodia can take care of the preah vihear for they let it goes into ruins or whatever. all of these are the result of siem thugs brain-washing anyone who talk or came in contact with them. remember they are good at brain-washing young, innocent tourists, etc... this is one of the reason why i found thailand obnoxious with their brain-washing of young, innocent tourists to utter such words against the khmer people of cambodia.

look just because cambodia went through a lot in recent history doesn't give thailand or i like to call them siem criminals or siem thugs for that matter, the right to steal preah vihear and to violate the 1904 - 1907 treaty or to have a contempt of court of the icj verdict, etc..., really, thailand has no right whatsoever to do this to cambodia. enough already. karma will come back to get you people if you don't stop this. you action doesn't justify anything when it comes to the court of court with the entire world as witnesses and audience. cambodia will prevail. god bless cambodia and all our beautiful khmer people.

Oh Oh Oh, Calm down you guys. Take a chill. hwow.

I see a gentleman, appeared to be an extremist thai, who said the khmers are monkeys.... Sad thing :(

the fact that we are monkey: is that the real point of view from the thai people? (be careful)

First of all, thailand does not exist in history in the region. It is a westernised nation like Eng(land), the Nether(lands), Ire(land), Deust(land), Fin(land)... Thailand is imported.

Second, the temple of Preah vihear is not Thai at all since it is made by the local civilisation Khmer (up or down or middle or whatever) khmer in short. NOT THAI. Because thai did not exist in history. Clear?

Third, If the temple was made by the khmer, then that means the khmer territory must have stretched farthur than that, since the khmers as two-leg animals cannot fly into thailand and build the temple for thai, and return to their country.

Fourth, since thailand was imported. So the today-thailand civilization too is imported. Black hair small eye like the khmer. The thais are not more monkey than the khmer. Just there were no war. Wa had war. But the war is coming to thailand from the south with the muslim. Imagine if the war tore out thailand apart. It would be hard to unit thailand again since you are imported.

think......:)

King Father has spoken. It is a done deal. Preah Vihear was King Father's effort for which he singled handedly defeated ah Nan chao Siems legally in the world court. King Father was the ONE and ONLY who successfully attained the INDEPENDENCE for Cambodia from France. In fact, King Father's effort makes Cambodia's success very unique. For example, who's who in the French IndoChina Union was the first one to DECLARE and ATTAIN the Indpendence from France. The answer is CAMBODIA. Now check this out: During French colonial rule of Cambodia, ethnic minority like the Vietnamese and the Chinese, especially were protected and supported in the various aspects of economy of Cambodia. The Khmer majority was shut out by the French. It was no more when King Father took the position as leader of the Khmer. His Majesty built schools and introduced top rigorous academic programs to challenge and polish the Khmer minds. Khmer students were given scholarship to further their advanced studies abroad. King Father made sure that the ordinary Khmer folks would participate in the Cambodian economy, and as a result, many Camboidans escaped their traditional roles as peasants and became successful in various endeavors. King Father had done much for Cambodia and the Cambodians in his younger days. Even in his ripeful age, King Father still commands respect on the international stage. King Father's legacy must not be forgotten and it must be honored in history books. Another thing that should be noted. Do you know that all of King Father's adversaries and contemporaries were all dead? King Father seems divine in this respect. King Father is the living proof of what seems to be long live the king and eternity.
