Cambodian American Community Denounces ICE Sweeps

Asian Week (USA)

LOWELL, Mass. - Affected family, community members and local leaders are gathering in solidarity against the recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency sweeps.

In the past five days, ICEA has targeted Lowell, where it has the second largest Cambodian American community in the U.S. and has thus far detained approximately 25 Cambodian American individuals. Most are transferred out of state within 24 hours of detention, cut off completely from family and legal assistance.

Families and community members are facing difficulties in connecting with their loved ones in detention centers because of quick detainee transference without sufficient information provided to families.

A Lowell community vigil is planned to demonstrate the solidarity community members have with those detained and for those who may be deported on August 14 to Cambodia.

Cambodia need more development to convince its both neightbors who always try to swallow our soil. I think now is not in time to make our country collapsed. We need to show that we are only one to push thai army back from our country. We also want to show this strengt to Vietname. We need peace and we need more investor to boost our country economic toward.

Our GDP: if comparing to other country in region (asean) in 2007 we only can do better than Burma. Income per capita (per person) Cambodia is only $521/year, Lao more than $600/ year, Vietname is about $800/year, Thailand is more than $3000/year. As forcus of our economist maybe we can reach to about $700 this year.

I am not a politician, and I am cambodian. I have never voted for CPP, SRS...ect. I just vote for small party which can not effert to win. I don't want my eyes to be blind just because of politics.
What i am concern is: Pls. think about NATION, 14 MILLIONS PEOPLE as your priority at first not for your selve.

Hope you understand clearly where we are, and what we are doing.

Finally wish you good luck. DON'T FORGET THAI ARMY AT OUR SOIL NOW.

All the best

What immigrants to the U.S. that came to the U.S. legally and hold "green cards"-that is are Legal Permanent Residents, is that if they committ a minor crime (and certainly a major crime)they will be subject to deportation. These arrests are of people who have already served their sentence but because they pleaded guilty or were convicted, they are subject to deportation proceeding and will be deported unless there are eligiblee for some form of relief as provided for by the current Federal Law. Cambodia can change its policy of allowing them back and simply refuse to let them back into Cambodia. If that were done, ICE would stop picking these LPR up because they can't be deported.

Something does not add up in this Asia Week article, when it states that the ICEA rounded up about twenty five Cambodian Americans and transfer them to await a deportation proceeding...

By using the term Cambodian-American, Asia Week is indicating that American Citizens are being deported.

Such action is not possible and cannot happen.

The United States does not deport its citizen to a third country.

The United States will only deport illegals, and residences whose hold green and whose have commit infraction.

Correct, Legal Permanent Residents (LPS) can face deportation proceedings if convicted for even minor crimes that constitute "aggravated felonies" under the Federal Law. e.g. minor drug possession.

I agree 11:51,
Asian Week need to do a better job on their article.
They lacks the What, when, who and why.
