A Japanese man has been arrested for allegedly taking nude photographs of at least six boys in Cambodia's popular seaside town of Sihanoukville, police said yesterday.

Shunichi Nakagawa, 32, was seized on Sunday, accused of taking pornographic pictures of boys aged between 13 and 15, said Suon Sophan, deputy police chief for the town's anti-trafficking and child protection unit.

"He was arrested on child pornography charges," he said by telephone, as Nakagawa appeared in court to face formal charges.

Nakagawa allegedly paid the boys up to 7.5 dollars to have them pose naked for photographs, Suon Sophan said, adding that police also found dozens of electronic pornographic pictures depicting children.

Japan in 1999 banned the production and sale of sexually arousing material involving children below 18.

The law was enacted after Japan came under international criticism for sex tours involving Japanese men in Southeast Asia and elsewhere as well as Japan-based Internet sites providing child pornography.

However, a loophole in the law allows individual possession of child pornography.

Cambodia, meanwhile, has struggled to shed its reputation as a haven for pedophiles, putting dozens of foreigners in jail for child sex crimes or deporting them to face trial in their home countries since 2003.
