Cambodia eyes nuclear plant for electricity

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — Impoverished Cambodia hopes to build a nuclear power plant to meet its future energy needs and help offset its dependence on imported oil, Prime Minister Hun Sen announced Friday during the first meeting of his new Cabinet.

In outlining his new government's vision, he said one of its priorities will be to expand electrical generation to power its small but growing economy. Increased housing and factory construction will generate more demand for electricity, he said.

Hun Sen offered no hint when Cambodia would actually have its first nuclear power plant, saying it is still "a long distance away for us, but this is our goal."

Building hydroelectricity and coal power plants will be the immediate priority for expanding electricity generation and reducing reliance on imported oil, Hun Sen said.

The government has identified 14 potential sites for hydropower plants and has granted contracts to Chinese companies to build several of them.

Electricity costs in Cambodia are among the highest in the world, and only about 15 percent of the country's 14 million people are connected to the power grid, according to the World Bank.

A poorly build nuclear plant can give you more headache than anything, don't forget the radioactive waste generated by the plant. Think about twice before jumping in the cold water.

From the Hun Sen legacy I think this is just another empty talk to hide the incompetence of his CPP party.

Ah Hun Kwak only made comments to show the stupid Khmer people that he is asshole smart. Give me a break ah Hun Kwak. You think you can build a nuclear power plant? you're stupid and dumb. You even can't build your own home yet. How could you dummy build the nuclear? just a trash talk from Ah Hun Kwak.

I don't know.. what the hell?
This idea nuclear powerplant.

It's already a problem when
we will have a lots of hydro powerplant.

We have a lots of agriculture.
...............................
Right now, Cambodia did not have enough
knowledge to verify the products
that cambodians eat.
At least the government should develop
this primal knowledge.

We can't always drink Angkor Beer.

Hey! building nuclear plant is not such a bad idea if we can afford one. Here is the secret, use that plant to enrich uranium and build nukes. When we have that weapons on hands ,we can say to THAI:" Withdraw immediately all OF your troop from our temples now or else" and in the meantime turn our attention to yuon and said: we want kampucher krom back NOW.

in your dream ,your ccountry so poor that your leader will have to sell all your temples to us THAI.. keep dreaming soon half your country will sold ,

I really support Prime Hun Sen speech for Cambodia to go nuclear to secure energy need and this is going to be a long term plan! Soon the whole Southeast Asian country will go nuclear and within the next 30 to 60 years and Cambodia will catch up with the rest of Southeast Asian countries!

So much for starting at the year of zero and I hope Cambodia can beat the deadline!

Hun Sen, do you have the resouce, the will, and the intellectual to do it. You are stupid, you are begging the world for money and you turn around to build a nuclear power plant?, are you out of your mind.

Are you asking Vietnam to build nuclear on cambodian soil and after it finish, the VN will take over cambodia.

Khmer is so sad to have you. I thought only Sihanouk is stupid and now you too!

I don't think the VN has the expertise to build a nuclear power plant.

I don't think VN dare to invade Cambodia, they would suffer economic embargo and eat rat for the rest of their low life.

No, the VN will feed rats to Ah Khmer-Yuon then it them instead. The VN is not stupid.

I don't know any Vietcong who want to feed rat to the Khmer Krom people but I do know that the Vietcong will eat dog just to keep up with inflation too!

Nuclear waste will not be a problem in Cambodia. We will just throw ir in the Tonlie Sap with all the other rubbish

No, that will not be healthy for Ah Khmer-Yuons who live on the water.

the tone here is so negative, what about looking on the bright side of things? how about cambodia could become the next singapore, south korea, taiwan, hong kong, or any other successful developing nations out there. why looking at cambodia as a glass half empty, why not look at it as a glass half full? mine, how some people's perception is bad for cambodia! god bless cambodia.
