U.N. Pleased by New U.S. Support for Khmer Rouge Tribunal

Editor's Note: The Office of the Spokesman of the U.N. Secretary General on Friday sent by email the following reply to questions from VOA Khmer about this week's announcement regarding new U.S. support for the U.N. side of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal:

We are obviously very pleased with the decision of the United States to provide funds the ECCC (Extraordinary Chambers for the Cambodia Courts).

The US played a key role in the formation of the ECCC and has been an interested and active supporter of our work since the court offices first opened.

Coming forward now with these funds shows that they remain committed to seeing the mandate of the ECCC successfully completed.

The funds will obviously extend the working capital for the UN side of the court for some time, but more importantly we hope this will signal the first of many such announcements from the donor community.

It clearly shows that the hard work put in by the staff of the ECCC and by Mr. David Tolbert in revising and presenting the budget to the donor community has been successful.

Cambodia must not let corruption occur or occupy at here tribunal court at least once here with alot of credits will be thrown out in the garbage bin. And it is very least doubtful that cambodia image with rampant corruption well-known already will again rock and shock the world of its shameless and non-consciousness of letting the corruption exist and survive in the world-standard court body.

Because of Preah Vihear dispute in 1962 and South Vietnam's border encroachment forced King Sihanouk to get away from SEATO's U.S. umbrella.

U.S. always gave biased favor to Thailand and South Vietnam, King Sihanouk had to go communist allies especially China, which even provoked U.S. anger that lead to 1970 coup d' etat.

How could thousand royal family members that ruled the mindset of Cambodia for two thousand years surrender easily?
Then, civil war broke out and over two million tons of bombs fell on a small country like Cambodia for over 5 years, which was much more than World War II, according to William Showcross.

Miserable life of Cambodians and false monarchy support lead to the uprising of communist Khmer Rouge.

The whole world is just run by the law of jungle. The stability of weak countries depends on superpowers.

Hun Sen should thank western people who care so much about human rights and the Khmer Rouge issues.

Khmer Rouge documentaries raised by the third party prove to be an even more effective tool to support CPP propaganda since 1979.

The West doesn't like to support anyone who rule for 29 years, but their coverage on Khmer Rouge issues give Hun Sen for at least another ten years to attract new voters. Before, only my grandparents and parents are CPP supporters. Now, my young brothers and sisters also thank CPP.

Khmer Rouge coverage show Cambodians that at least we are better than the Khmer Rouge and CPP is their god who saved them, which reinforce the 1st out of 8 CPP poster.

Before, Cambodians were not interested in Khmer Rouge. Even the most famous and successful movie maker E Vong Hem lost $30,000 for Khmer Rouge film in 2004.
