Cambodia: US Warship Gives Rare Tour To Cambodian Officials

PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA: Cambodian government and military officials took a rare tour of the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier when it sailed through the region on its way home from Iraq, embassy officials said Thursday (11 Sept).
It was the first tour by Cambodian officials of a U.S. aircraft carrier and "another step in the growing military to military relationship" between the two countries, said embassy spokesman John Johnson.
The Cambodian delegation was flown by a U.S. military aircraft from the capital, Phnom Penh, for a four-hour visit Wednesday (10 Sept) on the vessel, which was about 250 miles off the Cambodian coast, Johnson said.
Cambodia's army commander, Gen. Meas Sophea, called the tour "a very special occasion," in a prepared statement.
Mao Has Vannal, head of Cambodian's civil aviation authority, said he'd only seen such military capabilities on television.
"On the return flight, we took off under the force of the catapult system shooting the plane up into the air," he said Thursday. "It was so real compared to what we used to see on the Discovery Channel."
The tour was the latest sign of growing relations between the two countries.
In February, the USS Gary, a guided missile frigate with 200 officers and crew, was the first American military vessel to dock at a Cambodian seaport in more than 30 years.
During the Vietnam War, the U.S. military heavily bombed suspected communist guerrilla strongholds in Cambodia.
The U.S. backed Cambodia's 1970s military regime led by General Lon Nol until it was toppled by Khmer Rouge rebels. Eighteen U.S. soldiers were killed fighting Khmer Rouge forces on Koh Tang, a Cambodian island in the Gulf of Thailand, in May 1975.

This is not a negative gesture, but the positive to the government. It is showing the increasingly important role of Cambodia in the competion between US and China.
There is a major shift of the US's policy toward Cambodia in the recent years. As US embassador said, Cambodia is seen as a messemerizing, and full of opportunity for development.
US and the Kingdom of Cambodia will build strong friendship for better future for the next Generation.
Yes the next generation seems have been more capable in dealing with foreigners.
They know the weatern tactics and mindset better. They will do well in the 20 year of time

Please show your statistic to back up your claim! And may I ask what about you? Are you not an immigrant?
If Uncle SAM didn't bomb Cambodia into the Stone Age and AH HUN SEN didn't join the Khmer Rouge to overthrow AH LON NOL government and there probably wouldn't be any Cambodian immigrant in United States!
You just a fucken hypocrite yourself boy! Now go kiss the Vietcong arse for a job well done for making AH HUN SEN the dictator of Cambodia!
To 7:35am
I agreed with your comments. The U.S.A is such a two faces country or a hypocrite. In the early 1990s
no U.S. gov't wanted to deal with AH HUN SEN, now they showing their military might to his gov't.
OH I forgot CHINA is in love with CAMBODIA! It's USA jealousy disease.
To 6:39am,
Hey retard! No body will deport anyone because of these comments. IT'S CALL FREEDOM OF SPEECH, or THE 1ST 10 AMENDMENTS (BILL OF RIGHT). You might not heard of under AH HUN SEN. He uses to tell you to SHUT-THA-HELL-UP OR DIE!
Or he might say SHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
my boss HANOI is coming!
Regards,
New Yorker
IF THEY DO, THE 10 MILLIONS ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS FROM LATIN AMERICAN WOULD BE THE FIRST. But I don't think they able to manage the costs of deportaion.
Dear all,
You Khmers do not know that you are now under the pressure of US and China's regional expanding of power, economically, ideologically, polically and militarily.
These pressures are dilemma for khmers to make a choice of political tendency that would result in less danger to the Cambodian Nation. The globalization of the world, or simply called World Government, is the ambition of the world superpowers. Geographically, Khmers cannot avoid the dilemma.
If Khmers cling to the Chinese, they would get the danger caused by the US, and vice versa.
At the same time, Thailand and Vietnam will catch the fish in Cambodia's troubled water.
The dilemma for Khmers is " Crocodiles in Water, Tigers on Land." Khmers cannot escape such a dilemma.
War of any form can occurred in Cambodia. Indochinese Federation under Vietnam may re-occur, if war start between Cambodia and Thailand.
China's Ambition is "Where there is Sunshine there are chinese".
I pray that Cambodia will not get an oil curse.
Humanity should live together in harmony.
Black Cat
Who is the hypocrite here? If without veitcong probably and I probably your mama and your dada would been under ground already. and your arss probably will not seen day light either. Didn't you read news about Khmer immigrant in Lowell.
Who is the hypocrite here? If without Sihanouk giving rice to the vietcong during the vietnam war probably your mama and your dada would been under ground already. and your arss probably will not seen day light either. Didn't you read news about the vietcong offsprings with a protuberance big like a soccer ball on his face.
All my dear Khmer compatriots. Stop arguing each others. The US aircraft carrier's presence in Cambodia offsore meant neither to topple Hun Sen nor to invade China or deport Khmer overseas. They are here coz they are preparing to protect their oil, which Chevron has invested millions dollars and espect to havest in 2011.
Of course, Hun Sen's govt. has benifited from this relationship and Cambodia is also able to receive military aid from the US, particularly military training as they have done some so far.
The aircraft carrier's presence could somehow make China unhappy as US come closer to their door and the Vietnamese too.
Country boy
That's is all you can do is to copy cat, grand-son of Pol Pot. Because HJ Sihanouk your parents probably have gone undergroung long before Veitcong saved them and didn't have time to copulate and you probably wouldn't have a chance to get in your mama womb.
A show is just a show, no difference from any other Hollywood shit.
