[British] Govt urges restraint in Thai-Cambodian border clashes

LONDON (AFP) — The government urged both Thailand and Cambodia to exercise restraint on Wednesday after the two countries exchanged gunfire along their border.

"I am concerned to hear reports of fighting on the border between Thailand and Cambodia," junior foreign minister Bill Rammell said in a statement.

"I urge both sides to exercise restraint and take immediate steps to ease tension and find a peaceful solution to this dispute, through bilateral discussions."

Britain also amended its travel advice on the two countries, recommending that its citizens avoided all travel to the border region.

Earlier Wednesday, Thailand and Cambodia traded fire on the border in a clash over disputed land which left two soldiers dead and several wounded, officials said.

Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong said two of his country's soldiers were killed and two wounded in the clashes, which erupted sporadically for more than two hours before tapering off.

Cambodia and Thailand have been sparring over the land since July and tensions mounted this week after talks on Monday failed and about 80 Thai troops entered a disputed area, enraging Cambodia.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon called on "both parties to exercise utmost restraint and urges them to expedite bilateral talks so that their differences can be resolved peacefully," according to a statement issued by his spokeswoman.

i don't think there is a solution was thailand kept claiming and invading on cambodian territory, even as we speak. this is an urgent issue and must be put on a priority list of both national agenda. the borderline must be demarcated properly from now on, so to prevent this kind of conflict again in the future of the otherwise good neighbors. i hope cambodia will wake up and look around the world in terms of building good, lasting infrastructure in our country, and most importantly make this once and for all a proper defined and demarcate borderline so this kind of problem will not happen again. the boundary lines must be properly marked, i mean all of our boundary lines. but a villages, build concrete structures, etc... to marked this boundary line. do whatever it take, but please do not leave the borderline undefined like this again. this conflict is a wake up call for both sides to work together so the borderline can be properly marked by officiall treaty of the 1907 map, and not thailand's own unilateral map that they drew up in their own favor because that is so in violation of the international law that governs the international border line that the 1907 treaty was instructed to do. and thailand should know better; they should be more pragmatic in dealing with cambodia, instead of letting their emotion take over their dealing with cambodia because cambodia cannot and will not accept this violation by thailand!
