MCOT (Thailand)
In the wake of the Thai-Cambodian border skirmish near the ancient Preah Vihear temple, village defence volunteers in Thailand’s border province of Si Sa Ket have undergone basic military training to help guard their villages.
These men in Phumsarol, a small village in Kantharak district, are practicing their basic military lessons, to provide security for their village following the October 15 firefight on the Thai-Cambodian border.
These defence volunteers have been trained by Thai Second Region Army officials.
They learn how to use weapons, to patrol around the disputed area, and to report the latest situation to the military.
"We are backed up by these extra teams of volunteers. We give them advice. If there is something unusual, they will immediately inform us," said Chief of Public Relations at the Second Region Army, Second Lieutenant Chainarong Prayoonkam.
This is not the first time these residents in Phumsarol village, bordering Cambodia, have taken on defensive action to protect their community and sovereignty.
Back in the 1960s, some were trained during the Communist insurgency in Thailand and also the fighting among Khmer Rouge and other factions in Cambodia more than 20 years ago.
One volunteer involved in this mission expressed his feelings toward the latest military confrontation.
"I think the ferocity of violence on Oct 15 was less severe than the fighting in the period of the Cambodia Civil War in the 1970s and the stream of communism in Thailand. The villagers are panicking less," said Pling Mathong, village defence volunteer at Phumsarol village.
Although the latest skirmish along the border of the neighbouring countries seems less violent compared to the past, the people of the two countries still hope their leaders can find a peaceful solution to end the dispute soon.

Wow that's the dumbest thing I ever heard.
The Thai army is training the villagers to defend the country.
May I ask what is the Thai army doing?
10:31 AM....helping the PAD in bangkok....and wait for somchai to depart to peking then make their move.
They train to defend themself or encroach Khmer teritory? Because Khmer soldier never encroach their land instead their soldier encroach us.
They want Thai people die instead.
my goodness Khmer people don't let these soldiers coax you into walking into mine infested land because they are scaredy cats who are supposedly trained to fight.
You know you are Khmer when your village name starts with Phum. Don't put your life in danger and be pawn by the Thais to confront your own blood. Don't do this to your family. As right now, it say volunteer so you don't need to do this.
Khmer Unite, across borders and others will respect us. No matter where you are, you are KHMER! Remember that.
be proud. Once you lost that connection, you have no connection to Angkor, Preah Vihear, Ta Moan, O Keo, Nokor Phnom or anything Khmer. Don't raise up arms against your brothers unless the Thais threaten your life, in that case you can file law suit.
Villagers with muskets defending their homeland.
You gotta be kidding me.
We have to create a radio which broadcast in Arabic and thais to express our support for the fights of the Moslem separatists thai of the South and to call the Muslims to the uprising armed with the thailande because they have now a new and big support in their fights : the Khmer-Siemese war .

Good idea.
war occured, some siem soldiers run away for the scene, how about siem people? will they are able to fly or what?
THEY ARE NOT THAI VOLUNTEERS. THEY ARE MILITANTS AND RESERVE FORCES.
These men are really thais delinquents condemned in prison. The thais military used these prisoners to help the thais soldiers to dig trenches and fortifications of defence, the thais military services present them as villagers patriotic.
It is the thais military service propaganda.
The Khmer service military have to make the same thing.

I don't think this will help at all.
So when ah thai army dies, they can use a villager name instead. Smart move thai/dog. LOL.
I'm affraid that those villagers are Khmer Surin..the same things they denied the 10 captured are thai. Again, they probably Khmer Surin too that why they said those are not thai..
The villagers are from Si Sa Ket.
Yes, i agreed with some people said that "Phumsarol" in khmer peasar. Don't volunteer brothers. half of my father blood live in Kros, Bosaphov, Prasat. I was born in Lophok's Camp.
If those villagers want to die, let them be.
It sad to see that these villagers are more Thai then the Thai themselves. Against real soldier you you guys don't stand a chance.
Those Thai villager know nothing about military rule and regulation. they are very dangerous so Khmer's Soldier, please be careful. They might come to shoot you, because of their anger over the border dispute.
