Opposition leader Sam Rainsy said Tuesday he was concerned Cambodians will face severe livelihood degradation in the wake of the global economic crisis.
“I say that because of the economic crisis and also because of the lack of country management in general,” he said. People were worse off than they were 15 or 20 years ago, he said.
Sam Rainsy spoke to VOA Khmer following a private meeting with former king Norodom Sihanouk in Beijing earlier this week.
Joblessness, the loss of production in forests and fisheries and depreciating value of goods in the months ahead could lead to “turmoil,” he said, and people “protesting for solutions to their living.”
Sam Rainsy’s remarks come as the International Monetary Fund adjusted Cambodia’s expected growth rate for 2009, down to 4.25 percent from a height of 10 percent in recent years.
Cambodian People’s Party lawmaker Cheam Yiep said he trusted Prime Minister Hun Sen’s plan to weather the economic storm.

The elementary school Hun Sen does not what economy is, whatever bits he knows is from his father Yuon.
Yes there is little the opposition can do.
Will that mean the country is heading to the same direction as they want?
This is a reminder to all Cambodians so they can prepare themselves. Like the US, heavy investment in real estates i.e the City group bank but does the government have the money for the bailout? The answer is a NO NO.
Cambodia is agricultural country and local supply of agriculture products has not yet met the demand - we still import fruit etc. from VN or Thailand.
The poor basically in the countrysides will be poor as ever or even poorer. Those top rich military official still be rice or even richer but urban / city people in the lower / middle social economic class will suffer. If they spend less, they will not be able to stay in the city while most SME, the majority and most important contributors to the economy will also the sufferers like a domino effects. Those unfortunate people engaged in the real estate before the election will suffer the drop in price and demand. Garment worker will go back to their rice field and survive and half of them would perhaps go into prostitute. And for us, we would not be able to access KI media anymore because the internet cafes are all closing down. Some military officials would be rich form the increase of the military budget and sales of weapons (military uniforms and Accessories) at TTtuk Thlar Market.

The Yuon in the CPP must be eradicated, if we want the country to have a future.
The CPP gangsters always claimed that they are a democratic party but Ah Kvak Hun Xen been in power for 30 yrs and continue to run the country until he die. I wonder who are these clowns trying to fool. The only thing that Cambodia seem to be gaining exponentialy is the Viet immigrants inside Cambodia.
