“It is with great interest that I learnt about this book which discusses about your fight for the economic reconstruction of Cambodia, and in which you compared the Cambodian people to the stone, an emblem of the Khmer civilization.” – Bernard Kouchner, Minister of Foreign Affairs
“It is a dignified and courageous undertaking that you talked about in this captivating biography. Your struggle for the renaissance of Cambodia always brings much admiration.” – Alain Juppé, Bordeaux Mayor, Former Prime Minister
“I read with great attention your book dealing with this Cambodia that I know that your passion for her encompasses more than the sole political engagement, but also is an act of faith from your part. This act of faith in your country and in democracy which I had the pleasure and the honor to be a witness of, I am proud to support you in these struggles against totalitarianism and barbarity. I know, that once you returned to your country, the tenacity and the pugnacity in which you put yourself into as Minister of Economy, in order to bring orders to the state finances, this knowledge brings in more strength and value to the testimony in favor of the freedom of the people and democracy which in my view surpasses beyond the border of Cambodia.” – Calude Malhuret, Vichy Mayor, Former Minister
“I kept a lively souvenir of our conversations, of your enthusiasm and the ardor of Saumura, your spouse, and you are showing us that courage and perseverance can overcome anything.” – Jérôme Monod, Former CEO of Lyonnaise des Eaux, Former advisor to French President Jacques Chirac

Here is my personal impression about Mr. Rainsy. First, he deserves a big thank you from ALL of us for the service that his family and himself have rendered to the nation. There should be no doubt in anybody mind that Mr. Rainsy is a pure Khmer nationalist, serving Khmer interest.
Having said that, Mr. Rainsy political career has encountered several setbacks, mainly due to his aristocratic family background. Being the third generation of an elite class, it is natural that Mr. Rainsy thinks of himself as superior to his compatriots and destined to run the country. That thought or belief has unfortunately turned Mr. Rainsy into a self-righteous individual who is unwilling to listen to other people ideas, especially from other intellectuals. For Mr. Rainsy to have a real success in politic, the first thing he needs to do is to adjust his personal egoes, and become more engage with other intellectuals. His real ability is not a measure of how successful he communicates his vision to the poor peasants, but a measure of how inspirational he is to the intellectuals. Poor peasants are vulnerable and are often exploited by politicians of all parties.
Khmer Blood
Khmer Blood is absolutely right.
Kuoy Pichet
In order to succeed others, Sam Raisy has to succeed himself, because the way he does is only about his famous manner no real visions to be achieved in the future, and what he set in his policy is the weakness of the government and if the government do good things, Rainsy will no have nothing to talk about.
I believe that Mr. Sam Rainsy is pure khmer. He is the good one for democracy.

Mr. Sam Rainsy,
I believe you are a real Khmer compatriot. But, in order to succeed in you political career you must alter you vision on how thing should be done. AS 10:00AM has expressed in his or her opinion, for me about 90% is correct. If you party wants play as a role model a true democracy party, then let open it up. Restructure your party like those ones we have seen in the west. And for personal opinion only, you should leave Madam out of any party decision making.
I agree with the top commenter. Mr. Rainsey has to find ways, to establish access to get his messages across especially to disseminate his policy all over to the peasants in the country side. And he has to establish more "wise-can be social activities"to attract more national intellectuals. There must be clear distinct difference between the ruling party and the srp: if the gov.t can do it and srp must prove that it can do better or the lopeholes or area of deficiency that the ruling gov.t cannot implement then the srp must fix the weakness and prove to the people with their "good service of guiding and implementing" but not "lip services"anymore.
Srok Khmer
And Youn too. now they are all in Cambodia. What should we do? It's the fact now...wake up today and we don't have to feel sorry for tomorrow........
Khmer oversea must not support Ah cpp anymore. They will drag cambodia into vietnamization... Youns everywhere in Cambodia..... khmers need corruption law and it has be promised by cpp for over ten years. khmer oversea must stop donating in any form to this corrupt gov.t...... look for Non-gov.t organization with clear vision and mission to help poor khmers.....support any projects with determination to be implemented by any individuals or organization..... and stop supporting cpp or you will be blamed and feel regret for your whole life.
Tomorrow is today and today there are YOUNS everywhere. Khmers must do something about it.
Khmer Blood at 10:00AM, you have received many applauses from our learned commenters. I am thankful and of no exception.
My additional comments are:
1- The book should be available in Khmer and English languages too. Khmer is our own, while English is international. I really don't have good sentiment with the French, including their language. While brought us little good, the French did on us and left us so many bad things during their colonization.
2- I hope what Sam Rainsy have done is for the sake of the nation, not for his personal revenge as the latter is very dangerous; having noted that he initiated the 50%+1 formula and cooperated with Hun Sen to put an end to Funcinpec and cause the royals a great harm.
3- He should learn from mistakes as to why there were so many fellows defected to CPP during the pre-election period, without which SRP should have earned more than 30 seats despite CPP is managing the puppet NEC.
Raja
11:40AM, please provide additional detail or example on your statement : « … And for personal opinion only, you should leave Madam out of any party decision making.”
Despite of their lack of qualifications, many so-called Lok Srei or Chum Teav like to get involved in and influence their husband decisions on a variety of issues. By doing so, they eventually ruin the country and their husband careers.
I disagree with Khmer Blood 10am. If Mr Rainsy is not a pure Khmer nationalist and serving Khmer interest, he wouldn’t have sacrifice all these years and wasted his times opposing these current brutal and uneducated leaders who were also well known as former Khmer Rouge members. In my opinion, only the ignorant like the current leaders are not willing to share ideas and abuse their power to rule the country. Anyone dare to oppose usually vanished or disappeared. They had succeeded in their recent election is also because of their brutal, conniving strategy and most of all their ignorant population.
Mr Rainsy’s character is totally opposite to what you had described him to be. In my opinion, he is full of wisdom and charisma and has spent so much of his own well respected earned wealth and other resources to contribute to the need of his people and his country. His movement to reach the vulnerable peasants or other groups of population is not easy but he had done his best and had overcome many optimistic including risking his own life. He likes to practice his political skills in an academic and peaceful ways. Perhaps, this is not the right time to change yet as the whole population is still ignorant and stubborn or scare just like during Saddam Hussan regime.
It is so typical of Khmer characters that no one is appreciating of what others had done. It is very disappointing indeed.
PS: In a real world you need both male and female to build the world. Cambodia has always been ruled by men and looks what happen? You all are still a typical Khmer pig to leave weman out. Why don’t you open your eyes and look at other success countries like Australia, New Zealand, German and USA ….etc?
To the learned 1:13PM,
I'm neither supportive nor against "the feminists". Cambodia does have increasing women holding high positions. However, having women ruling or not are unlikely the determining factor for success; it is instead dependent on skills and wisdom. My view is that first of all women should endeavour and prove that they can do it, then the public will see and choose her.
Best regards,
Raja
1:13PM,
I think you misread the first paragraph of Khmer Blood comment. Read again.
On a different note, you write like a woman. If you are, we welcome you to the forum. We want to hear more from women like you, and encourage them to join us to share ideas that benefit our country. Every Khmer citizen, regardless of her or his gender, has a role to play in the country development and progress.
Good Khmer
Rainsy,
You have done well, but you are ot going up is becuase you don't look far enough, you are imprisoned by casinoholic Eng Chhai Eang, and Yim Sovan. Why are you so scared of these two, i don't know.
You must stand up and revamp the leadership if you want to move up next mandate, or risk disappearing.
The chhai eang factor had caused the Funcinpec votes to go to the CPP, not to you, although plenty of vote frauds.
It's pleasing to see Cambodians exchanging passionate views and opinions about their country. I have not been fortunate enough to have observed Mr Rainsy operating at close range nor yet read his recently published book. However, it is said that a tree is known by its fruit. Of course, then again humans are shaped by their surroundings just like everything else in nature so if a tree is poorly soiled or badly nourished, how is it going to produce wholesome fruit?
Why do people insist on giving priority to the so-called 'intellectuals' at the expense of the lowly, ill-educated peasantry? There is concrete class tensions behind Thailand's current political toimoil at present that is providing ample warning to the often arrogant and self-regarding, self-serving Khmer elite who claim to love their country but inwardly despise their 'little' compatriots.
One of the main foresights of the political Left from which the CPP emerge has been its insistance on maintaining a social contract with the 'little people' through various social welfare or development schemes whilst keeping the self-indulgent urban clases happy by incorperating and co-opting them into its specious political hierarchy so as to widen its popular base and convey appearance of democratic representation.
One needs to grasp these social dynamics first of all in order to formulate effective political party strategies. Thus, if Mr. Rainsy has been engaging with rural and poor urban folks, let him continue doing so. Cynicism, opportunism, and disillusion are endemic in political vocation. And sometimes, it requires near blind faith and personal conviction of seemingly egoistical proportions to bring salvation to a nation.
All propaganda should be banned from srok Khmer, and the perpetrator should be lock up.
Hi This is 11:40AM,
I am sorry that I had left a stir on the last sentence of my previous comment. Here how it goes. I had heard very often from those members who had defected to CPP before the July nation election saying that the SRP party is run by just a hand full of party senior members. One of those senior members is Mada suamura. Now, base on my knowledge, in any democratic process this is not preferable. Madam Suamura is a very intelligent person and she can serve as an MP, but not part decision making. Perhaps, she should take her role more toward NGO responsibility rather than party internal affair. To clarify this further, I don't believe everything I have read in the news, but if there is 100 people have pointed out the same issue, it has to be a logical sense that there must be some truth in it. Anyway, I have nothing against feminine take important role in politic and especially in Cambodia.
7:55PM,
Yes, it is comforting to see fellow Khmers taking active interest in this debate, and I must admit so far people have been very candid and civilized in expressing their views.
Most of us here have closely observed Mr. Rainsy political platform and activities, while some even have personally met with Mr. Rainsy. I wish you have done the same or had similar experience as it is important to reach a sound judgement.
I am glad you ask why people insist on giving priority to the so-called 'intellectuals' at the expense of the lowly, ill-educated peasantry. None of us has the right to act, or should even think, that way. The main point here is that the have-not/unfortunate peasants are vulnerable and would believe almost in anything a politician promises. For Mr. Rainsy to ensure that he has a workable strategy for the country, he must have the endorsement or support from the intellectuals because they are the ones that can objectively assess and tell if Mr. Rainsy’s plan/vision is achievable or just a false hope for the poor. That’s why it is crucial for Mr. Rainsy to open up his party and intensify his engagement with the intellectuals. Once he gets their support or buying in, these intellectuals will help him to set up the process that mobilize the grass-root people and bring his party to the next level. Finally, in my humble opinion, personal conviction for the country has nothing to do with personal egos. In fact, they are almost the opposite of each other.
Khmer Blood
If Sam Rainsy want to win the election he must win the following conditions:
1. First and the most important thing is to stop his wife Sumura in involving politics. She is unlike other woman for this lady is so unreasonable, impolite, arrogant and unfriendly to the SRP-members, esp those who need change or reform. She is known to be the effective machin for shuting up Sam rainsy´s mouth.
2. Minimizing Eng Chay Eang´s power or By-law reenforcement in the party. Eng Cahy Eang is always abusing his power and makes rain and storm in the party as he wish with the support of his gangs in the party and esp Sumura.
3. Being a real democrats. Rainsy should work closely with intellectuals and the grassroot. He should have the courage to accept critics, motivate and value all kinds of participations- activities and ideas, but not only financial contribution.
4. The principles of encouragement and respect in the party must be uppheld for all members.
It's time for Ah Pleu-Oversea to get another dosage of Ah Scam Rainxy's propaganda.
