The Cambodian Minister of Women Affairs and Culture has requested a group of Khmer artists based in the United States to stop drawing sexy Apsaras (celestial dancers) and change their sensual appearances after those drawings were put up for sales on a website called reahu.net.
Dr. Michel Tranet, a renowned Khmer historian said that that website has gone too far from the original context of the famous Khmer Angkorian cultures. He said that the sexy drawings of the European-styles is the deliberate intentions of the artists in the promotions of prostitution. Some tourists are seeking sexual pleasures and this is no secret or not new.
What Dr. Tranet wants is a cultural tourism about Cambodia, not sex tourism. Dr. Michel Tranet said that all the Apsara drawings on that website have deviated from the bas-reliefs carved during the Angkorian period because the drawings show the Apsaras as bending down to show their sexy bottoms or hug each other in a sensual way. He said: “This is what our culture never have before or never have promoted.”
He said this is an influence of a culture that incites sexual fantasy which is a deviation from the form or the characteristics of Khmer culture. It is true that the achievements of our ancient artists were of high standards and are to be proud of and unrivalled. But in contrary to the values of Khmer culture, those Khmer-American artists have not put the values of Khmer women to the highest echelon as did during the Angkorian period.
Many Khmer philanthropists have appealed to those artists to modify or to just change the appearances of those drawings that is un-Khmer. Dr. Tranet said that, if those artists have goodwill and good judgements they should do what is good and what is appropriate.
Dr. Tranet appealed to those three artists to help maintain Khmer national soul as they are Khmers as well because whether they like it or not the flags our the Khmer soul are in their hands.
Cambodian Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs. Ing Kantha Phavi, has expressed concerns that the website will degrade the values of Khmer women and the fine Khmer culture and traditions. She is trying to contact those three artists to ask them to clarify about their motives for those drawings.
Mr. Khieu Kanharith, the government spokesman and minister of information, agreed with Mrs. Ing Kantha Phavi, but said that the drawings have no political messages.
Mr. Chuch Phoeung, secretary of state of the ministry of culture and arts, said that the website was not based in Cambodia. He said that the Cambodian authority cannot do anything. If it is based in Cambodia we can invite them to explain to us. He agreed that those drawings can cast a bad image of the Khmer culture but said that the Khmer authority is unable to do anything (to stop them).
Mr. Reahu, one of the animator at reahu.net, who have visited Cambodia recently, said that reahu.net has three artists who have studied arts/drawings in the United States and they do drawings as a hobby during their free time.
The Apsara drawings which are currently on sales include two sitting topless Apsara girls, topless Apsaras with see-through dress, topless Apsara leaning on the rock in front of the real Angkorian walled-Apsaras and a sensual topless Khmer Rouge woman soldiers carrying a gun.

The stone Apsaras in Angkor Wat are half naked indeed but they were never built with the intention of provoking anything sexual. They were built based on the fact that being topless was nothing but a norm back then. After a thousand years, they have become part of history and art. To Those Who Think These Images Depicted and Exploited Khmer Women.
In my opinion, these images simply are images of an artist who brought out the best of his expression to the world to see of what Apsara in reality looks like. The ones on Angkor's wall are colorless, however those that are made by Reahu happens to be with colors, but the same Apsara are the same in concept and actuality of the depicted arts and culture of the symbolic of once great Angkorian period.
I do not find any of these images offensive in anyway, shape or form; they are simply an arts that have been on the wall of Angkor for many centuries. These images created by Reahu are simply an expression and the creativity of one man who has the ability to bring this once dying art form into life. This is not about exploiting or degrading Khmer women or cultures. Prostitution has always been a problem in third world countries throughout the world. It is the rule of law that must be focus on those who have exploited Khmer women and child molestation, not diviating from the truth of what has happened in Cambodia as we know it.
Dr, Tranet on the other hand, if he is an American, should tell the truth about pornographic and the exploitation of an American culture and tradition to which the US is so openly expressed and not that of Cambodia. Some PhD are not respectable, and here is my supportive argument: once, about ten years ago, I attended a metting where there were about two hundred guests, and it was presided by a PhD who taught history at one of Americam universities. In his speech, he called Hun Sen, "ah Hun Sen". He was the one who attempted to get involved in politics in Cambodia. He would be high-profie figure. I personally disapproved with name calling preceeding by "ah". I don't like Hun Sen, but in my comments, I never use the word "ah" to preceede his name. In public, when you call someone like Hun Sen, starting with
"äh", you cheapen yourself indeed, not Hun Sen. This is a kind of PhD that will never earn my respect.

If you truely cares about Cambodia this is not one of the issues that you as leader in our parliment should worry about. There are more better things that you should be worry about such as stability of Cambodia economy in 2009, Preah Vihear border tension, Anti Corruption Laws and Referendum, Traffic Laws, Poverty Reduction, Education, ect. These are issues that we are facing as a nation.
I believe within our Cambodian Constitution, there is such as a clause specifically mandates about our Freedom of Expression, thus what Reahu has done is to exercise his rights and it is exceptable under this context. Those who objected to the depiction of the images created by Reahu ought to practice what they preached, but I doubt that they will do that.
I have traveled to communist countries and they too, have also wanted the same principles as the West and those of Europes, but they have failed to achieved the same success, thus they are envied and trying to do whatever they can to destroy what the West stood for which is a democractic values and respect rule of law. Associate, Master and Phd only signifies a person has gone through an extensive studies and researches of that subject or major to which are most viable to them and nothing else. However, should they used this degree to intimidate the unfortunate or those who have lacked of chances to pursue such high learning then those who possess such degree is as low and uneducated than those who have not attained such higher learning. It is the duties of those who have found the education which is the power to change and not used it for self gratifications and to gain from the unfortunates.

The apsaras carved on the walls of angkor wat are no different. in the public galleries and museums around the world, these sorts of pictures are in open display. it is called artistic expressions. there are worst things in cambodia that hun sen should be worried about than this. him, his men and officials have many young mistresses and do people think because he and his officials watch these sorts of half-naked pictures? These artists are expressing their artistic expressions and they display their pictures in their website, not in the public place, so they should not be condemned. this is their freedom of expressions.

I received these pictures by email from friends who use to send me porn pictures and porn movies by email. So it is clear who is interested by such paints and that perverts will be attracted into Cambodia to have sex with cambodian women.
These paints are beautiful and the artists are very talentuous, but if they don't stop the way they paint, the cambodian government shall put them in blacklist and forbidden them to come in Cambodia and search to trial them in the US or in Cambodia for treason and dishonor to our country and culture. We have enough problems with rapes, sex trade, poverty, etc. so that no need to promote such kind of things. We don''t want westerners and international people mock and see cambodian women as prostitutes. Look what happened with Thailand, famous for sex industry: when a westerner or someone marry with thai woman, everydbody in the US or in Europe, doubt and laugh about the background of the girl, even if she has studied in Harvard or in England... Pheww, this was one heated debate about the merits or non-merits of certain pieces of "art". As for myself, I have nothing against nudity in pictures, but I must say that this/these artist/s aren´t up to the mark when it comes to depicting a "real" Apsara (who must have that "elevated" sort of beauty and appeal). As some before me have also mentioned (maybe not in quite the same words) I find the bodily depictions to be of a somewhat (or totally) vulgar nature (like porn-movie posters or something). I would like to challenge these and other artists to come up with something a tad classier when it comes to depicting Apsaras - I do not think the matter is of so grave importance as to warrant state-intervention, but it should be kept on an artistic level (all you who dislike the pin-up Apsaras and have some talent: create your own art as an "antidote" against the demeaning Apsara-pictures).
