Thailand: Following the yellow shirts tsunami, now comes the red shirt storm

Red shirts gather forces

Advance guard moves to House overnight

Bangkok Post

United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) protesters have started surrounding parliament ahead of today's policy statement by the government.

Almost 20,000 red-shirted supporters converged at Sanam Luang on Sunday in preparation for the seizure of the ground outside parliament on Monday.

An advance guard of several hundred Sunday night blocked a key road outside the legislature.

The rest are to move to the site on Monday, and plan to stay put for the next three days. They will disperse for the New Year break and then return for a protracted demonstration until parliament is dissolved.

UDD core leader Jatuporn Promphan announced the plan to the Sunday crowd at Sanam Luang.

The government is due to deliver its policy statement to parliament on Monday morning, with a two-day debate - a constitutional precondition to legalising its administrative power.

The protesters believe the Democrat-led coalition government under Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva lacks legitimacy, and want him to dissolve the House.

Mr Jatuporn said the protesters will not cut electricity or water at parliament.

But if the government changes venue for the policy statement, the protesters will follow them.

Groups of UDD supporters moved to the front of parliament on Sunday night and blocked Uthong Nai road which approaches its main gate.

Natthawut Saikua, another UDD leader, said protesters will leave a narrow path for the MPs to walk into parliament. Surrounding protesters will shout "give us back democracy" while MPs make their way through.

Police have closed the gates of parliament and are guarding the legislature in front and at the rear.

Deputy Metropolitan police chief Amnuay Nimmano said professional photographers and cameramen drawn from the police force and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will record the activities of UDD demonstrators.

Video footage and photographs will be used as evidence against any law-breakers.

In the event the protesters commit offences in view of police, they will be arrested on the spot.

Pol Maj-Gen Amnuay said police need help from photographers and cameramen because protesters have covered surveillance cameras around parliament with black plastic bags.

Whenever police remove them, the bags are put back on again.

"This shows they intend to do something bad and want to cover it up," Pol Maj-Gen Amnuay said.

Protesters who commit violence to stop the government delivering its policy statement would be charged with insurrection.

Demonstrators would have to pass through metal detectors installed around parliament before entering the protest site.

Demonstrations must be peaceful and demonstrators must not carry weapons of any kind.

Pol Maj-Gen Pongsant Jiam-on, another deputy city police chief, said he had received information that many UDD protesters assembling outside parliament were seen carrying catapults and metal rods.

At the same time, the Democrats said they will not force their way through anti-government protesters if they are blocked.

Democrat deputy spokesman Warong Dejkitvikrom said Deputy Prime Minister and Democrat secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban told party MPs to be careful when confronting protesters.

The Democrats will not insist on entering parliament if the building is sealed off by protesters.

"The government has asked 3,600 police officers to ensure security at the site.

"Mr Suthep told authorities to avoid the use of force or tear gas" to disperse the crowds, Mr Warong said.

Democrat MPs were told to gather at party headquarters before travelling together to parliament. Supplies of food and drinking water are in place in the event the MPs manage to enter parliament but are later trapped inside.

What goes around comes around. This is gonna be a big problem for Thai’s internal politics; it is never going to end with peaceful unless the king intervenes. Sabay Jai Loey.

Thailand has so much internal civil unrest these days. It seems every prime minister has a lifespan of only a few months. With every change of government, the Thai people seems as if they are never satisfied.

I swear, it has now become a national pastime or hobby these days in Thailand to find a three letter acronym, select a colored t-shirt, and protest the removal of a prime minister. I think they find it fun and some of them are just bandwagon followers. They have nothing else better to do.

According to some sources,
Thailand is in deep trouble with internal affairs and looking to politicize anything to seek the world attention. Preah Vihear is something the THAI can prey on Cambodia for now...

Viet puppet Hun Sen, on the other hand has been instructed also to politicize the matter to divert and distract the world's attention from the Vietnamization of Cambodia and the final push for the completion of the federation of Indochina.

The Preah Vihear case has been closed for decades by the Hague. There is no way that Thailand can reverse that. The Viet experts and lobbyists all know full well and ready to go to court to help secure the future of the Federation in cooperation with and/or on behalf of Cambodia.

Either way Cambodia under Viet puppet HUN SEN stands to lose on this again: there is nothing to win on the case whereby Thailand has already lost decades ago. What Cambodia will lose is her being gotten closer and closer to her demise while contributing in her entirety to the birth of the Viet Feferation of Indochina.

It's so sad...This is Viet-Cambodia under Viet puppet HUN SEN and Sihanouk families!!!

The first two comments are funny. I like your comments.

Well, again the Thai elite did not like the PM elected by the rural and poor, and so do the rural poor do not like the PM put by the elite minority.

The elite middle class Thai should respect the result of the election and wait their turn until the next election. Respect is a two way street, not one way. Respect is earn not by demanding and forcing people to respect.

We will see the rainbow colors in Thailand.

I hope the police force give the same treatment to the red shirt like they did to the yellow shirt.

Good luck the red shirt. I support you. They stole your PM seat now you will have to fight back.

Happy New Year.

King Bhumibol will die in 2009. If this red shirt are the same people that Thailand's monarchist had feared at some point, the country will be Kingless. What does red shirt means anyway? Red thai or communist?

Anonymous said...

red shirt means bloody thai and yellow shirt means shitty thai.

All the poor,

Stand up against the yellow- shirt elites.

Pure Democracy does not seperate the poor farmers from the elites. We are equal by law and by nature. We are also human beings.

The elites can only survive with the poor. They can enjoy the live of elites because of the poor Thais.

STAND UP ! STAND UP ALL THE RED-SHIRT POOR.

Siam gov.t changes stance back and forth to claim advantages and even the vicinity of Preah Vihear Temple. And I am confused and keep wondering who is invading who? And Preah Vihear temple belongs to which country for sure?

Ahead of us is bloodshed for sure if there is any war occur--it's gonna be a big war definitely!

And khmer is in the lose-lose position: if Siam invades, khmers will have to ask Vietnam intervention and Viet's army can claim their presence on Cambodia's soil legally and afterward can claim the areas along the borders and push forward faster more than ever before on their master plan to turn Cambodia to join the federation under the control of Vietnam. And life-and-death matter of Cambodia is when Viet population outnumber (will not be likely soon, but in 10-15years) or anther scenario with top and hencemen as their puppets to allow more time to legitimize more illegal viet immigrants into Cambodia soil (This one is very feasible).

Khmers soldiers will lose thousand of lives and khmers must ask why the gov.t does not seek the intervention from the world body, say UN or in conform with ICJ verdict or franco-siamese treaty?

As the matter of fact I do enjoying that show very much. I just have thought it is Khmer turn watching our neightbour's show. We have been played for so long. So we should relax sitting on the couch, holding Angkor beer and cheering each other. Oh... man, I love it.

3:24pm - you are so panic. Please don't be! I believe there is a war for sure, but arm conflict would be very moderated. It is more likely the war of words and black-and-white in front of the international community.

Thailand would possibly invade Cambodia only the areas sorrounding the Preah Vihear and bordering vicinity, but not deep inside Cambodia.

So being fear of loosing Khmer lives would be unlikely meterialised. Last but not leat, raising your glass of Angkor beer and say Cheer!

... and enjoy the show

11:11AM. I like your comment. The Thai elites created the PAD (yellow shirts) and stired up trouble not just in Thailand but incited fighting on the Preah Vihear border also. The red shirts (Thaksin supporters and other parties for democracy and against military dictatorship)represent Thai majority that won the last election. But the yellow shirts (the PAD) refuged to recognize that last election result. Thai democracy is really a joke .

Thai society has many people's movements, many educated people who care and love their country, and they have a lot of resources to mobilize force to oppose regime they consider not protecting their sovereighty.

In far contrast, Khmer society is broken. We have only foreign puppets, fake nationalists, fake politicians, corrupt intellectuals who line up for servicing the corrupt dictators. Only a few of us truly care and love our nation. Majority of us is opportunistic and coward.
