The Human Rights and Sam Rainsy parties officially signed into an opposition coalition movement, saying they were confident they would be able to defeat the ruling party in upcoming elections by pushing for changes in national election regulations.
Government spokesman Khieu Kanharith said he was not surprised by the move, but said he doubted the two parties together would defeat Prime Minister Hun Sen’s Cambodian People’s Party.
The new coalition, called the Political Democratic Movement for Change, was signed by party leaders Kem Sokha and Sam Rainsy Thursday morning.
“Today is a historic day for the Cambodian people, and it is the time for the people to decide to change the leader in Cambodia,” Kem Sokha told reporters. “We will follow democracy and respect the rule of law and counter corruption.”
The movement so far does not have an organizational structure, and technical details would be discussed later, Kem Sokha said.
“We had a plan to form this movement a long time ago,” Sam Rainsy told reporters Thursday. “We appeal to students, civil servants and all people to join with us for change in Cambodia.”
The leaders publicly urged activists from both parties across the country to work together and prepare for commune elections in 2012 and national elections the year after.

Why don't you people just allow us Westerners to run your country? Why even bother with Sam Rainsy and Kem Sokha?
There are many of us Westerners already living and working in Cambodia and dating your women, and you know that we can do a better job running your country than you can run it yourself.

Most of my comments focuss on what will be good for Khmer people. I always take side with people, never with the dictators whoever they may be. Bravo! Khmer Democrats! I have been hoping for this reunion for a long time. Now it has come true. I am 100% support of this Alliance. Khmer Democrats Will Defeat the CPP (ah Yuon Puppets) once and for all.

when the strategic methods of cpp are clearly seen, why don't the parties provides leadership skills to most of their followers?
1) when cpp notice the alliance is strong and solid, cpp will buy out key members by bribing with money and positions...and say if there are too many how can cpp buy all of them?
2)when followers of opposition parties are capable and wise by leadership training and decent job skills equiped by the parties, you think those followers will have two heads or easy to buy out? that's not for sure. We call it--individual conscience with proper and advanced education and they cannot also be buy out too. those followers will stay loyal thanks to parties that open their eyes, mind and brain and they can also become good citizens--and that can be good example and role models given birth by the party!
Opposition parties need to open up more, show its intelligence and smartness by training their members--offer them skills and training to become not only good citizens but the leaders in their communes/villages with proper assistance financially and spiritually.
