Fight to save crocs

SCIENTISTS from Cambridge are helping to save one of the world's rarest crocodiles from extinction.

The Siamese crocodile, which lives in Cambodia, is at risk because of illegal crocodile farming. Demand for the reptile's meat and hide, which is used to make shoes and handbags, has led to virtually all of the population being wiped out.

In a bid to help the animal survive, the Cambodian government has set up a rescue centre, where about 70 crocs are being kept.

The plan is to breed them in captivity and then release as many as possible back into the wild, but first it is necessary to find out whether they are pure-bred Siamese crocodiles or hybrids.

Scientists from the Cambridge-based organisation Fauna & Flora International (FFI) are helping to establish this by DNA testing.

An FFI spokeswoman told the News: "If a suitable number of pure-bred Siamese crocodiles can be identified through DNA analysis, it will mark the beginning of the first ever Siamese crocodile captive breed and release programme in Cambodia."

She said the Cambodian Crocodile Conservation Programme was set up in 2000 when Siamese crocodiles were rediscovered in Cambodia by Dr Jenny Daltry, senior conservation biologist at FFI, and Mr Chheang Dany of the Cambodian Forestry Administration.

"Since the rediscovery, FFI and its partners have scoured Cambodia and neighbouring countries to establish more information on the status and distribution of Siamese crocodiles."

They have found a small number of them living in the waterways of the Cardamom Mountains in south-west Cambodia, along with other endangered species such as the hairy-nosed otter and the fishing cat.

The Cambridge team has to be careful. Fully grown, the crocs can reach 3.5m in length, more than 11ft.

Some biologist gave the name while Cambodia and Laos were part of Siam. and He discovered the crocodile in Siam first and Cambodia, Laos later.

Stupid comment. Go and ask Daiwin.

Do you instead want the Biologists to put your Own name on this type of Crocodile?.

... i think he is "Khmer crocodile", not "Siamese crocodile".
Remember, SIAM means thief or robbery. So, it, SIAM, always steal or rob someone's property, specially, Khmer's property.

For the sake of name change. We should ask the regional to change this Siamese Crocs to Khmer Croc or Cambodian Crocs cause they are in our water and soil.

Khmer logic,

Yeah, stupid Darwin!!
He had only travelled to Thailand and very limited of travelling to other place in the regions and only discovered shit in Thailand and started naming it Siamese's croc??
Wtf with that? The world is very big for him not just to name shit to support himself. Didn't he ask the regional countries back then??

This guy is the most stupid biologist in modern time.

LOL, tell me about them.
Sometime these western travels to Thailand and only seeing thing on one-sided of story.

Like Pad Thai example. There is noway that only Thailand can make Pad Thai. That fried noodle existed in Khmer for years before they named it like this. I rather call it Pad Khmer.

Like, in Lowell, MA I've travelled to a local supermarket "Asian Market" I saw these Cambodian owner writing down on the card box next to all various vegies and saw the eggplants being named as "Thai Eggplant" I was laughing so hard. I told them wait a minute. Khmer have these vegies well. Why the hell name them Thai's eggplants??

Give me a break!!

Khmer Logic is not logic. He look thing through his ultra-nationalist lens, not through his brain and eyes.

yes, a good way to protect them is to set a wildlife sanctuary preservation for them. god bless cambodia and the world for helping to preserve and protect the rare animals from extinction.

and yes, when it comes to preservation, cambodia will need a lot of technical and financial assistance from the entire world community. thank you for caring for all. god bless.

The Siem like to put their name on everything as if they were the creator or God!

These days the Siem are getting to much credit for everything! Oh well! Since the White European have more exposure to the Siem culture and this is all they know! The origin of the Siem people came from Nanchoa in Southern China and that is their origin and please leaves it to that origin!

There is no such thing as the Siamese crocodile, Siamese cat, Siamese fighting fish...

i know, good point, a lot of western countries, especially the USA and so on always name "siam" for the animals they found in southeast asia. that's just not fair when the animals were all extinct in thailand and now found only in a small part of cambodia and still called it siamese crocodile or whatever. i think biologist should reconsider naming it a khmer name instead. even khmer people has a name for it. it's called "krapeu khmer", hello! i think it goes to show how little khmer was known in the world, really! that's why khmer people must try to educate all foreigners about cambodia and khmer things. we are less known than siem and maybe youn, too. and it is khmer people and those foreigners who are now beginning to learn about khmer must help to teach and inform the world of khmer things, too. it's not fair to ignore khmer like this!

If we do not have enough scientists to do research on identification of flora or fauna species, those newly found will be named in any name they (scientists) wish too.
