Cambodia to ask UN to list 1,400-year-old temple as world heritage site

PHNOM PENH, March 16 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia will ask UN to list the Sambo Prey Kuk temple, which was built from 615 A.D. to 650 A.D., located in the Kompong Thom province, as a world heritage site, Khmer-language daily newspaper the Rasmei Kampuchea reported on Monday.

"We are preparing the proposal for UN to register the temple, which was built during the rule of Khmer King Isanavarman I, with the Committee of World Heritage," the newspaper quoted Som Sokhun, secretary of state at the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, as saying.

The government has to organize a master plan for development and conservation of the temple, he said.

It was even older than the world-renowned Angkor Wat in Siem Reap province, which has been the hottest sightseeing spot of the kingdom, he said.

It was built with clay, but not stones, with which the Angkor Wat was constructed, he said.

The Sambo Prey Kuk temple is expected to become a place for people to study and research Khmer culture, construction, arts and history, he added.

The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) already listed the Angkor Wat and the Preah Vihear temple in Preah Vihear province as World Heritage Sites.

Yes that is good. the more you list, the more tourists will enjoy, but don't forget to pay this profits back to the people who contribute to the conservation of those sites.

Dear KI,

The name of the temple is Sambo Prey Kup, not Sambo Prey Kuk. "Kuk" is prison, while "Kup" means "surrounding" or "surrounded by". So, Sambo Prey Kup would be literally translated to mean "the temple full of surrounding forests".

8.44 am, you are wrong student. sambo prey kuk is the propername, not sambo prey kub. the word kuk here comes from Kuhear, not kuk( prison). do you know what Kukear means ? since you are a student, go and learn properly.

Government should list all temples considered to be UNESCO worthy for registration at once... any missing others can request later.

They are all in urgent need for protection... We don't have the time to spare... the sooner the better.

5:25am, i think it is ok to go by the conventional name like sambor prey kuk because a lot of khmer place names like battambang, kratie, stung treng, kompong soam etc... are not really true khmer sound and spellings, however because it is conventional meaning, it has been used for a long time by many people, we are stuck with those spelling. same with sambor prey kuk, too. it's just technical spelling, no problem here. go by conventional spelling, by of course, our khmer sound will always sound the same when we say them in khmer language. thank you and god bless cambodia.
