A WHO'S who of anti-Vietnamese leaders of the 1980s gathered at a stupa in Kandal province Thursday to commemorate resistance fighters who had died as part of the movement's effort to expel the foreign power.
The Khmer National Liberation Front (KPNLF) was one of the main resistance groups to emerge along the Thai border following the fall of the
Khmer Rouge by Vietnamese forces and their subsequent administrative takeover of Cambodia.
Former KPNLF army and political leaders inaugurated a monument with inscriptions of the names of resistance fighters who died between 1979 and 1991 at a ceremony in Kien Svay district.
Chuor Kim Meng, who had been a lieutenant general for the movement's military wing, said the resistance helped push the Vietnamese out and forced the local officials it had installed to accept multiparty democracy.
"If not for these fighters, Vietnam may have continued to occupy Cambodia," he said.
Dien Del, former chief of staff of the group's army, said the event "preserve the memory of those who died expelling the Vietnamese occupiers".
Prince Norodom Ranariddh, the guest of honour, praised the resistance. "I have never forgotten its fighters who died," he said. He, too, described the Vietnamese troops in Cambodia at that time as "invaders" and "occupiers".
While there was no official condemnation from the government, the commemoration should have proved controversial as the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) evolved from the People's Revolutionary Party of Kampuchea (PRPK), the regime that governed Cambodia under the control of Vietnamese forces.
KR alliance necessary
Son Soubert, son of Son Sann, founder and former president of the KPNLF and himself a participant in the movement's administration, said he had sent a letter of invitation to Prime Minister Hun Sen, Senate President Chea Sim and Deputy Prime Minister Sok An. Only Chea Sim responded, saying he had other obligations.
Cheam Yeap, a senior CPP lawmaker, criticised the KPNLF for characterizing the Vietnamese as enemies.
"Vietnamese troops did not invade Cambodia," he told the Post by phone. "They came to help Cambodia from the Pol Pot regime - we should be thankful to the Vietnamese."
The exit of Vietnamese forces in 1989 came about not from resistance pressure from the border but because the PRPK was ready to rule on its own, he contended.
Opposition party representatives present at the ceremony, however, insisted the Front's cause was righteous and attributed the exit of Vietnam to its efforts.
"They fought for our freedom and sovereignty - that represents Khmer nationalism at its purest," said Human Rights Party President Kem Sokha.
Sam Rainsy Party spokesman Son Chhay had been the KPNLF's representative in southern Australia, where he was based then. "Without the resistance from the border, we would not have had the Paris Peace Accords," he said.
Nationalism first
The KPNLF started in 1979, recruiting some of the hundreds of thousands of Cambodian refugees seeking sanctuary along the border with Thailand.
Its key figures had held prominent positions in the administrations of Sihanouk and right-wing general Lon Nol, and were unified in their opposition to communism and to the presence of Vietnamese forces in the country.
The Front was seen by the US and other Western allies as the most reliably anti-communist and pro-Western group in Cambodia.
In its effort to drive out the Vietnamese, the Front struck an awkward alliance with remnants of the Khmer Rouge. In 1982 the KPNLF entered the tripartite Coalition Government of Democratic Kampuchea.
The new coalition included the Party of Democratic Kampuchea, a splinter group of the defeated Khmer Rouge led by Khieu Samphan, and the royalist resistance movement known as Funcinpec, and represented Cambodia at the United Nations.
For the former leaders of the Front, the alliance with their ideological counterparts was a necessary evil.
"Son Sann always said the country is more important than the party or faction," said Pol Ham, who had been the Front's Information Minister.
"We hated the Khmer Rouge, but at that time we had to prioritise - and the foreign occupiers were the first enemy. We formed a coalition but kept our own identity."
Son Soubert was adamant the Front had never "joined" the Khmer Rouge.
"We were forced to enter a temporary coalition to achieve our goals," he said.
Funcinpec Senator Sabu Bacha, a former general of the Front's army, said the dire circumstances required divisions among Cambodians be put aside "so first we could expel foreign troops from our soil".

Lest we forget. They died fighting for our nation - expelling the foreign invaders. More of these should be built around the countries and more Khmers should pay respect to them.
Good to see people commemorating the memory of resistance fighters who laid down their lives for their country. There is still someway to go yet before the Khmer nation is free from unjust foreign influence and subjugation.
I urge all Khmer patriots to try to work together in unity in defense of national soveriegnty and dignity rather than siding with foreign powers in perpetual antagonism and persecution directed against their own brothers and sisters.

Hun Sen's win-win means: Cambodia's open door policy for the yuons and siam, and fellow Khmer who possess different political opinions are to be harrassed, intimidated or killed.
When people label your god Hun Sen as yuon, that iswhat they mean: knowingly or unknowingly serving yuon interests. And he has, if you have any bit of brain and education to think outside the yuon box.

If you think everything that happens to opposition people are politically related, you set yourself up to the wrong course already. Apparently, you don't read Khmer newspaper but if you do, you would know people are chopping and killing each other for personal disputes like crazy. That's meant to inferiorate them but that's how Khmer society is. People are quick to resort to violence and just because you are a member of an opposition party, it doesn't mean everything that happens to you is done by the other party.
Maybe you should go investigate that murder personally before doing the usual quick jump to the same old "generalizing" conclusion. As we all know, generalizing is equal to wrong majority of the time as nothing is the same, people, things, events.

I agree that Hun Sen is good with Viet but I don't agree that he serves Viet's interest more than Khmer. Just look at how Khmer people in Cambodia were treated by the international community following fall of Khmer Rouge in 1979. The whole world abandon Cambodia and didn't bother to send in any aids because Cambodia was under Vietnam and US can't stand Vietnam for what happened in Vietnam War. Many Cambodians in Cambodia who had just gotten out of the bad time of Pol Pot had to suffer once again because of the West politics. Do you know who shipped truckloads of food and supplies to Cambodia? The Viets did. They did it until their economy felt apart and had to leave Cambodia in late 80's.
Khmer never to get over the ancient racism that keeps Khmer society and culture from entering the 21st century. We all knew the historical animosity between us and the neighbors. I used to be a very nationalistic and at times racist but it is this so-called blind extremist patriotism that makes Khmer paranoid and kill other Khmer on the suspection of being the "other."

I'm not saying Viet is the mighty savior for Khmer people but they, despite whatever the intention was, did drive out the Khmer killing Khmer aka Khmer Rouge. I ain't saying we should worship Viet but I'm saying we shouldn't be so paranoid about Viet taking over Cambodia because I honestly truly believe they are not. Very interesting topic and is the most interesting topic in Khmer history! Got it confused, one is play ennemy's game.
As victim of the Khmer Rouge, I needed any one who can help save my life, call it Yuon or Siam. And that was the ennemy's game plan. Now, after reading all the comments, I can see that the Viet's smartly and carefully planed came to a 250% success in creating cunfusing state of mind among Khmer nationalists.It's very dangerous for us all as Khmers.Anyone can be right or wrong. I was a former KPLNF fighter that always stick with my patriotist ideology: COUTRY FIRST. I have no reason to carry hatre against the Viets (because it's even harmful for anyone), but I knew for sure that when your historic ennemy handles you a cake, it must countain poison.Sorry I should not call the Viets ennemy, but they themselves made me(call).In the 21st century no country will conquer the territory of an other country, and the Viets know that too. That's why they pulled their troops back in the 8oth and replaced them with civilians!

I agree with the idea that Cambodian political culture of both Hun Sen and Sam Rainsy have played the same attitude of using "public arrogant political rhetoric" or you called it "badmouth". But if I weigh Hun Sen's one, it is more dangerous than Sam Rainsy's.
But get to your point, if you speak for the Khmers you might have some other words better than your above comment in here. But if you speak for the Viet, yes your words in here are perfect.

Now I am a bit relieved to see this monument going up, better late than never. After Pol Pot, as young orphaned boys, my brother asked me to join the army, I refused, still being traumatised by the recent event. I took off to the Thai border, leaving him behind. I learned not longer ago that he had joined the KPNLF fighting the yuon invaders. To this day, I've never heard anything from him, assumed dead. This Front lost about 3,000 men, from what I heard. But I am happy that he had died for a good cause. A 13 years old orphan but still had some nationalist conscience to think of his country. How, in looking back, I am proud of him. I also thanked my mother, despite her limited education and short life, often talked about the country, instilling in us an etetrnal love for srok khmer.
In Khao-I-Dang makeshift hospitals, I never forgot the wounded KPNLF soldiers, despite heavily wounded, still screaming: " ah yuon, I can't wait to go back to continue to fight you !!".
It is to such Khmer heroism that our land still exists to this day. Thanks to their sacrifices.
The Vietnamese did not help Cambodia. Cambodia helped Vietnamese providing food and land for VC military during Vietnam war. Vietnam never give credit to Cambodia. Instead they continue to destroy Cambodia.

As part of the reconciliation process, a war museum should be built inscribing all soldiers from all factions who died.
It is not to glorify war, but to reconcile badly broken Khmer society.
We ask that the Viet controlled Hun Sen regime in Phnom Penh let go of the Cambodian (Khmer) people. Let them be free of intimidation, open threat and/or otherwise, and free of the Viet's domination in Cambodia.

I'm glad to see this monument be erected. A lot of the soldiers who died or lost limbs, whether be be FUNCINPEC's, Son Sann's or Heng Samrin's, from the 80's and early 90's need to have their bravery, patriotism and sacrifice be commended and commemorated in monuments or museums. These soldiers gave up a lot and lost a lot because of never-ending fucked up Cambodian politics and the incompetency of Cambodian leaders.
