Progress in Cambodia?

Tuesday, March 24, 2009
Opinion by C. Sann

The progress of Cambodia reconstruction is driven by illegal, and unethical practices. In part, with Hun Sun secretly backing his subordinates in illegal logging, illegal convictions, and massive corruption.

The truth of the matter is Cambodia is truly developing into the future. However, they sacrificed locals in achieving them. It's a sad fact of reality that the people are powerless when confronting the government. If any type of injustices that people would bring up about the government it will be seriously denied resulting in a number of massive killings to the people.

Everybody questions why investigation regarding deaths related to assassination of journalists or opposition members or even celebrities always lead to a void. A void where nobody will be able to find an answer. The reason why this void exists is because it involves a high ranking government official. And, any attempt to bring this official to justice would be death. For the Cambodian people, this is a scary thought. Their lack of education, and awareness will mute them from ever bringing any type of injustices from the government out to the open. Every Cambodian student in the USA must be educated to know the history of Cambodia so we can slowly bring Cambodia system to par with many other democratic nations.

it's called impunity, leaders think they are above the laws! this area deserves a long awaited reform in cambodia. leaders are to service the people, not the other way around. and if they are found wronged, they ought not be tolerated and face justice like everyone else! if khmer people don't stand up and demand this kind of justice for all khmer people, cambodia will not learn. khmer people and their representatives should serve the people well, otherwise, make sure to educate everyone to vote them out of office the next time around. don't let money buy your happiness, your doing what is right for our country, your health, your spiritual well-being, etc... it is nice to make a lot of money, but also remember that money isn't everything, especially if it interferes with our health, the law, etc... please learn to think critically and positively for it is good for our health and country as well. god bless cambodia.

From Surya:
Education alone is not enough. Regardless wherever you live, you must respect and value others. You guys alone can not make any thing good. Some educated US Khmers are very ignorant. They want more respects than they could offers. Some even shamelessly told other Khmers to respect them just because they are educated/raised in the US. If you guys keep such strange attitude, Khmers can't live in peace. Social divisions make our society weaker, and is very vulnerable to instability.

In short: stay united, respect others as you want them to respect you, and recognize others' accomplishments.

Honestly, despite the corruption and mishandling of Cambodian resources and assets by the CPP-controlled Cambodian government, there is progress being seen in Cambodia. However, one must realize that Cambodia still has a long ways to go before it can ever become what Vietnam was 10 years ago and what Thailand was 20 years ago.

I personally believe that a lot of the corruption that occurs at almost every level og government and some parts of civic services are greatly hammpering development.

Also, I believe critical thinking and the idea of having ingenuity and vision should be taught in the classrooms in much more depth. Cambodia is way too comfortable and satisfied with what is given to her by Thailand, Vietnam and China at present time.

Great memo on how some self-elevating individuals think they are superior than others intellectually and belittle others who have different opinions from them. I live in the US and you can't express any idea favoring the CPP or else you'd be youn this and that. Just ask yourself. Is this how the so-called educated people behave? Education is supposed to open up your head to understanding, tolerating, and rationale, not turning you into a blindly self-centered ignorant conceded cynics.

As far as I see the Khmer in US have no respect for the Khmer in Srok and thus vice versa. One group accuses the other of betraying the nation while upholding themselves to be the saviors and the right side. The truth of the matter is no one group is completely right and no one group is completely wrong. The CPP have good qualities to them and bad ones also, so do SRP or any other parties.

Until the day you can think independently from your political party affiliation, you won't be seeing the bigger picture. When you side with one side, no matter which one it is, you have this pre-conceived mindset of the subject matter you're gonna digest into your head already. It's like making up your mind before seeing the argument.

Think independently. It's hard to do so when you align yourself with one side, which majority of human beings do. The gang mentality. The need to fit in and be part of a group. This gang mentality keeps you from seeing more than one sides to the story and use your rationale completely without bias.

Think about that.

Something you should learn is the ethnic and nationality labeling trick that Khmer politicians used to attack each other.

Pol Pot murdered his own Khmer people without guilt because he thought they were youn or American spies.

Do you wanna walk down that road of pure BULLSHIT "I'm Khmer and they are not so let's kill them"?

You answer that question properly because that question was never answered by any Khmer from the previous generations and that's the question that got Khmer in trouble again and again against each other.

In Cambodia, there are Khmer ethnic, Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai, Laos, etc... If you think you're the only Khmer, you have walked down the wrong path like many of the now dead Khmer who thought they were the real Khmer and so nationalist that they killed the enemies of the state but what they failed to realize is that their enemies were all Khmer.

Your points are very well expressed and rightly put into the context of the Khmer society. I am with you 100%.

What a shit load of crock? The fact of the matter is most people have benefited from Cambodia development year after year. Poverty is down at an extraordinary rate of 1% per year, which is much better than most countries on this planet. The only people who think they didn't benefit from the growth is Pouk Ah Greedy Scam Rainxy who seek to be billionaire overnight.

PROGRESS TOO SLOW.

HOW CAN BE PROGRESS. WHEN TOO MUCH CURRUPTIONS !
