PHNOM PENH (AFP)--Cambodian and Thai negotiators on Monday began a new round of talks aimed at resolving a border stand-off which flared into deadly gunbattles near an ancient temple last week.
Three Thai troops were killed in Friday's clashes over disputed land around the 11th century Preah Vihear temple, the deadliest fighting for six months in a long-running feud between the neighboring countries.
The two-day meeting in Phnom Penh starting Monday, which aims to resolve competing claims surrounding the temple, was part of a process launched after an earlier clash in October when four people were killed.
"The incidents that have happened show that the border issue needs to be resolved very quickly in order to avoid more incidents in the future," Var Kimhong, the chairman of Cambodia's border committee, said.
"There are many issues that need to be resolved, such as the provisional arrangement of the army and the fact that the foreign army have to pull out from our territory," he said before meeting his Thai counterpart Vasin Teeravechyan.
The last meeting of the Joint Boundary Commission, in Thailand, ended in February with the two neighbors failing to reach agreement on any of the key points, including the spelling of Preah Vihear in official documents.
The World Court gave ownership of the temple - which Thailand calls Phra Viharn - to Cambodia in 1962, but tensions flared in July when the cliff-top building was awarded United Nations World Heritage status.
The current dispute centers on almost five square kilometers of land around the temple which has yet to be officially demarcated due to disagreements over which maps to use. The most accessible access to the ruins is in Thailand.
The Cambodia-Thailand border has never been fully demarcated, in part because it is littered with landmines left over from decades of civil war in Cambodia.
Cambodian and Thai military officials have held several rounds of talks over the past few days to prevent fresh fighting on their border.

Looks like Thai wanted to have a war with Cambodia. Cambodia have no more pride after Thai came into Cambodia any time they want and evict Cambodia farmer people.
To reclaim the National Pride Cambodia should give what Thailand want...(WAR). I bet everyone go with the underdog (Cambodia).
Many thai are khmer...why khmer keeps on fighting each others?
Thai/Khmer
"Many thai are khmer...why khmer keeps on fighting each others?

Wow, I heard this 2nd round Khmer beat them easy. HUN SEN said, none of Khmer feel any scratches. Most of the dead are Thai. They kept coming to retrieve their dead and end up died too because they stepped on land mind.
Thai side ask the Khmer not publicize the news of their dead.
Khmer Border,
Mother fucker stop playing game with people lives go to international court for the amswer!
May lightning strike the evils!
We must let the Thai pay any damage on the temple and the 300 villagers that got their houses burnt down.
HUN SEN wake up!!!
the question to solve this border problem is the map used. if thailand continue to use their own unilateral map which of course they drew in their own favor naturally, cambodia and khmer people can never accept or honor that. the map must be by international treaty. when was the last international treaty between thailand and cambodia? it went far back as 1907 when the present border lines were internationally recognized by both countries. now, if thailand finds that hard to accept, then they are the one the seriously violated the international treaty of 1907. that's it, no buts or ifs about that! thailand cannot just buy time and wish that they can get away with this violation! they can do whatever, but the old map cannot lie; it was real, concrete evidence on when the treaty was ratified officiall, and if thailand have problem with that why wait 100 years already to solve it, when not try to solve that since day one? go figure; we all know the siem thieves intention on stealing khmer-built temples and lands. until they acknowledge and respect the international treaty, cambodia will never yield to them like during the dark ages again. once a bully will always be a bully! we'll bite back anyway we can! god bless cambodia.
many khmer people were born in thailand and thus they forgot that they and their ancestors were from cambodia originally. it is time for them to wake up and be reminded and learn that they are khmer people too, just happened to born in thailand. wake up, people! that's what they get for not learn to speak khmer properly! i think they should have khmer schools in thailand to teach these forgotten khmer people the rich khmer language again! god bless cambodia.
Be firm, PNH, use 1907 map, period! No buts, or buts. Full stop!
If they insist to step in our soil, shoot them more. We protect our soil, and we are in full right to use self defence.
For the Khmer in the Kingdom of Cambodia, they are ready to die for Prasat Preah Vihear. The Khmers outside of the border want to die for Thai Kingdom, why ?
9:57PM! those khmer people in thailand never considered us as their family, they alway think, and considered khmer kandal is their FOE! we are not the one to blame for the killing! Thai is using khmer in thailand to hate khmer kandal, my message to all khmer in thailand must realize how tricky thais are, they have done this trick since falling khmer empier...
Thailand using khmer/thai to hate khmer kandal, and Vietnam using khmer krom to hate khmer kandal also!
During 1979 refugee camp, and Mali mountain, there were too many khmer refugee got shot and rape, Thai black clad had forcing them to walk on mine fields, those people were blown into pieces, these khmer refugees were killed and shot by their own blood family! this is what thai deserved for killing those people during 1979...
22 death and 28 wounded is nothing compared to those khmer refugees that were blown into pieces in the mine fields at Mali mountain victim 1979...
Don't you see how cruel Thais are? they used khmer/thai to hate and killed khmer refugees that time, those khmer in thailand are brain damage by thai...
If khmer in Thailand still think or considered khmer kandal as their FOE, will fuck them all up! if they dare to encroaching into khmer territory again, khmer is different now, not the same as you thought Thai King Fags!
Stop your encroachment and your greed...
