Cambodian, Thai defense ministers to meet for easing border tension

Tea Banh, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, said here on Thursday that he and his Thai counterpart will hold a meeting to find a solution to the border tension between the two countries.

"I and my Thai counterpart will meet with each other in Siem Reap province on April 27 and 28 in order to find ways to ease the border tension, and avoid new armed clash near the Preah Vihear temple and other places along our border," he said.

The meeting has been delayed twice since February, and "we are waiting for the Thai side to deal with the issue peacefully and without military confrontation," he added.

Tea Banh was unsure whether the next meeting will be conducted as scheduled, as Thailand is still obsessed with internal instability.

On April 3, Thai and Cambodian troops exchanged fire near the 900-year-old Preah Vihear temple, killing two Thai soldiers.

Since July 2008, troops from both sides have stationed near the temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and two armed confrontations last year sparked brief concerns of war.

The two neighboring countries have never fully demarcated their disputed 800-km-long border, mainly due to their different interpretation of historical maps and the landmines left over from decades of civil war in Cambodia.

As history has told us: Thais are the invaders all along. There should no tollerance with Thais if we have a patriotic leader, but we are very unfortuante that we never have one. So far we have had only leaders who are not loyal to us Khmers whom they have exploited for their own political purposes and their own benefits.

A Message To Our Soldiers at the front,

Since the beginning of the standoff, we have clashed with Thai troops a few times during which we had inflicted more casualties on their side. However, we must remain extremely prudent with our tactical manoeuvrings and strategies. Beware that the Thai commanders have meticulously studies those clashes to assess our fighting skills, tactics and strengths, and to better prepare their troops for future hostilities. This can be observed through the troop and material re-enforcements that the Thai recently made.

Remember mobility and terrain knowledge are our main advantages. Do not resist direct assaults, instead adopt evasive manoeuvrings for counter-attacks. Know the terrain like you know the palm of your hand. Deceive the enemy to pre-established positions and annihilate them with mortars or other close-range artilleries. Anti-personal landmines continue to be our effective weapon to deter enemy intrusion or slow down their movements. Use these landmines wisely and effectively.

We have complete and utmost confident in your ability to defeat the enemy and safeguard our sovereignty. May God bless and protect you all for your unwavering patriotism. May our nation be for ever grateful for your unparallel service.

… end of transmission.

When our soldier captured thai, we should not release them easily! Khmer army leader should use them for political purpose, by asking them to withraw completly out of cambodian territory or something! we treated them like special guest and let them goes free! this is why thailand kept taking advantage on use, because they knew that we are soft and scared of them...

it might be useless again. cambodia needs to request international mediators, then take thailand icj for the last time and make sure to request icj to properly help to demarcate our borderlines so thai (siem) can't have anymore excuses in the future about borderline not properly demarcated and so on. of course, cambodia still demand that the 1907 international treaty map be used always when it comes to properly demarcate our borderlines. cambodia must not accept thai's unilateral map as they took advantage of our civil war period to unilaterally create their own one-sided maps in order to claim and steal more lands and khmer ancient temples from cambodia. we must never allow them to do that again!

I wish that Mr. Tea Bahn will not speak Siamese language AGAIN in any formalities as such during, after the talk especially to the media.

Please speak Khmer if you can not speak a single word of any international language, and get someone interpret.

Mr. Tea Bahn represents Cambodia talking to Siam in this meeting. He must not speak Siamese in all formal functions.

Hope he will be wiser this time!

Importantly, don't forget that millions of barrels of oil are flowing into Thailand. That said, I don't think Thailand wants to screw with Myanmar (formerly Burma).
