The European Community (EC) will provide some 5.11 million U.S. dollars for Cambodia to maintain food security for its disadvantaged people, said an EC press release received here on Tuesday.

Non-governmental organizations for poverty and hunger reduction will use the fund to guarantee food supply for rural residents who are short of necessary livelihood, EC's country director Rafael Dochao Moreno said in the release.

"EC aims to help the most fragile people to survive the current global financial crisis," he added.

According to the release, the grant will mainly benefit the people in provinces of Oddar Meanchey, Preah Vihear, Ratanakkiri and Mondolkiri.

The crisis has led to closure of over a hundred factories and unemployment of at least 300,000 workers.

The government has asked the unfortunate labor force to return to their hometowns for farming.

Why EC give food Aid to Cambodia? The Government recently claimed that the rice product in 2008 far exceed the local need and plan to even export some million tons of rice.
