Chides the opposition for its long support of their party leader and says a winning team does not change its roster.
PRIME Minister Hun Sen on Tuesday chastised the opposition Sam Rainsy Party for its criticism of the ruling Cambodian People's Party for keeping the same man in power for 30 years.
The SRP was reacting to a Sunday announcement from Minister of Information Khieu Kanharith, who is also the CPP spokesman, that the party had again reaffirmed Hun Sen as its candidate for prime minister.
But Hun Sen on Tuesday pointed out that the Sam Rainsy Party leaders had also remained the same for many years.
"You guys [SRP] don't come harass me while you're also still with the same person." Hun Sen said.
One day after a closed-door annual congress of the CPP, Hun Sen reiterated his committment to holding the premier position for as long as his party kept winning general elections.
"The football team THAT wins competitions never changes their roster," Hun Sen told about 500 people at the launch of a new supply water station in Chroy Changvar district on Tuesday.
Koul Panha, executive director of the local election monitoring NGO Committee for Free and Fair Elections in Cambodia (COMFREL), said the attacks between the CPP and SRP were just business as usual and that it's unlikely new leaders will emerge soon.
"When the voters do not fully understand the political infrastructure and remain in love with personal leaders, the individual parties will not think about changing their leadership," Panha said.
Cheam Yeap, a senior CPP lawmaker, said the party believes that more than 8,000 commune councilors out of a total of 11,353 will support the CPP.
The council election campaign is to officially kick off Saturday.

Hun Sen chose to die with power because he surely knows that without power he will meet a sudden death (kar slabb taihong) anyway, then why not him gling to power. This the nature of all dictators in the world, as we have seen so far.

I am sad to say that PM Hun Sen is right on this point. SRP should take a close look at its own leadership before criticizing CPP. The problem is not because CPP is too strong, but because SRP is unable to build momentum and mobilize popular support. If SRP is really adopting Western political principles, it should already have reshuffled its leadership rather than pursuing its agenda with the same leadership and strategy.
One should understand that most human being have, for their profit, a tendency to do what's illegal or evil. Winning or being strger does not mean that the CPP is good. The CPP has a tendecy to what is illegal and evil for its own benefit. It's nest of the crooks and evils.

So what if Sam Rainsy still the leader of the opposition and what matter does it makes? Sam Rainsy didn't sign supplement border treaties with the Vietcong to give away Khmer land. Sam Rainsy was not hand picked by the Vietcong to rule over Cambodia. Simply put Sam Rainsy is leader without power and Hun Sen can step on him at anytime if he wants to such as lifting his parliamentary immunity to face persecution.

Some commentators seem to imply that a leader in opposition is equal to the position of a prime minister in power. Hun Sen's words cannot be accepted at face value. The comparison is for the consumption of the unsophisticated Cambodian public. If people accept Hun Sen's argument then one should ask this question – if Sam Rainsy quits from the leader of the SRP will Hun Sen quit from the position of the Prime Minister?
Though someone mentioned about Sam Rainsy for not changing as well. You are absolutely correct. Sam Rainsy can't change because he didn't sign any treaties and agreement with Hanoi. Sam Rainsy will continue to be the opposition as long as people die. Sam Rainsy is not elected or appointed by YOUN to lead the country. The people of Cambodia will challenge HUN SEN any time in near future.

Thank to God who help SamdechDeck Cho to stay in power forever. So Cambodians are lucky to have the same leader for their whole life and the SamDech Dek Cho can do whereever, whatever, whenever, he will. Cambodians have no choice to choose other food, but keep eating the same food, the same flavor for the whole life. Samdech Deck Cho will get vote support more than 123 seat in 2013.

Both CPP and SRP are "winners" in all elections so far.
In 1998 CCP won 64 seats and SRP 15.
In 2008 CCP won 90 seats, an increase of 41% and SRP 26, an increase of 73%.
Not bad at all for SRP and its leader, when it has no control over the state aparatus, the security forces and the media, and has meagre resources.
SRP is like the tail that can and does wag the dog - for the good of the country.
