TRA VINH — The Anh Binh Minh Traditional Art Troupe of the southern province Tra Vinh has lined up a range of shows to celebrate the Khmer New Year, Chol Chnam Thmay, from April 13 to 15.
Dozens of its artists have fanned out around Tra Vinh, Soc Trang and Ca Mau provinces for performances based on the culture and lifestyle of the Khmer.
Dressed in traditional ethnic clothes, young and veteran performers sing and dance, but also perform serious plays focusing on the religion, traditional customs, and arts of the Khmer people.
"Our performances showcase the beauty of the Khmer spirit," said Meritorious Artist Kim Thinh, head of Anh Binh Minh, one of the province’s leading art troupes.
"We hope our shows enable young people to improve their knowledge about tradition, understand the greatness of their country’s rich culture, as well as learn useful lessons about love, life and people," he said.
In Ca Mau, Thinh and his colleagues have visited remote districts like Thoi Binh, Tran Van Thoi, and U Minh, performing in front of several thousands of people.
"We’re not looking to make a profit from these shows but we hope to encourage young people to love their culture more," said Thinh, who often travels with his staff by boat to remote areas to meet their fans.
"Chol Chnam Thmay is a time for people, especially youth, to celebrate after a year’s hard work and studies," Phan Huu Hung, a farmer in Thoi Binh District, said.
"We love to see Anh Binh Minh artists because their shows are quality and feature our Khmer culture," he added.
As in past years, the troupe along with many others is putting up free performances during the festival.
There are nearly 1.3 million Khmers in the Mekong Delta, chiefly in Soc Trang and Tra Vinh.
Local residents and visitors have flocked to participate in music programmes, traditional games, and sports competitions launched at the beginning of this month by local authorities.

The show of Khmer culture is a few parts of VN's Mekong Delta, Kampuchea Krom, is a show because VN is receiving grants and interest-free loans from the int'l financial institutions to develop the ethnic regions.
If VN is serious about it, VN must change the all the names back to Khmer names that once were, i.e. South Vietnam back to Kampuchea Krom, Ho Chi Minh back to Prey Nokor city, Tra Vinh province back to Preah Trapeang province, Soc Trang province back to Khleang province, An Giang province back to Mort Chrouk province,..., Phu Quoc island back to Koh Tral island, and so forth.
For decades, from day one of first grade, Vietnamese children are taught to recite a poem that roughly translates as follows:
"Our country,
in the shape of letter S,
stretches from from Ca Mau point to the tip of Mong Cai ....."
Ca Mau Point is near Phu Quoc island.
Vietnam is a multi-ethnic country, but it is one country. Khmer people in southern Vietnam are Vietnamese, but of a different ethnic than the Kinh and the Mongs and the Champs. The culture that Khmer Vietnamese people celebrate in South Vietnam is a part of the multi-cutural society that is noderm Vietnam.
Unless you think that the US should return 99% of its land to the native american tribes, or that China should let Manchuria or countless ancient kingdoms be separate states, you should never realistically think that southern Vietnam one day will be "returned" to the native inhabitants of centuries past.
And note the name the this dance troupe: Anh Binh Minh Art Troupe. The dance is Khmer, but the name is Vietnamese (Anh Binh Minh to be translated as "Morning Sun Light"). This is Khmer Vietnamese people celebrating an element of the diverse Vietnamese culture.

I did not compare Vietnam to US or China in terms of economic power (although Vietnam in fact is the only country that had ever defeated USA and thrice pushed back the Mongols' invasions in the 12th century when the Mongols army ravaged Europe). I made the comparison to demonstrate that almost every modern nation has land that in the past belonged to a different state or tribe or group of people. Singapore was once part of Malaysia. The hundreds of native indian tribes owned North America for millenia before white people came to ravage and kill them. The comparison is neither economic or militaristic in nature. It's only to demonstrate that South Vietnam is as much and as well recognized as a part of Vietnam as California is to the US or Guangdong to China.

11:57, Taking Kampuchea Krom back by peacefull mean WILL NOT be possible. As I always mentioned to my peers, the only way to take back these lost provinces is by force. Not by the sheer number of troops since Cambodia is tiny compare to Vietnam in population, but by a high-enery device, perhaps two or more. Khmer should send their kids to western schools learning nothing but nuclear engineering, hard science, or high-energy physics. I know I have a doctorate in one of these areas and have been working for one of the best labs in the western world for more than a decade. Vietnam and Siam watch out! May Day is coming for the sins you have committed against Cambodia. One day we will get even with the souhern ethnic Chinese. Keep history alive and keep searching for our identity!
