Songkran the old way [... in Cambodia]

I have just returned to Thailand after a visit to Cambodia where I spent Songkran in Siem Reap. What a vast difference in the way it is celebrated. I was privileged to be invited into a Cambodian home where I saw teenage and adult children pay respects to their parents by pouring perfumed and flower-petalled water over their hands before receiving a parental blessing in return.
There was no sign of Songkran-gone-crazy on the streets. Where was everybody, I asked? ''Oh, we go to the temple for Songkran,'' was the reply.
And sure enough, when I went to the local temple there they all were, including young novice monks enjoying building sandcastle stupas from the new sand that the faithful had bought into the wat.
Is it too late for Thailand to return to these simple and dignified means of celebrating this important festival which seems to have totally lost its meaning in Thailand today?

"About half the 156 accidents that took place during the long weekend were caused by speeding and about 13 percent by drunk driving."
At least 48 people died and 350 were injured in road accidents nationwide over the New Year, officials said Tuesday.

Prey Veng province registered the most traffic fatalities, at nine, followed by Battambang with five and Siem Reap with four.

On Saturday 14 April 2012, the Cambodian Friendship Association in Finland organized a Khmer New Year celebration in Helsinki, Finland. Erkki Tuomioja, Finland's Minister of Foreign Affairs, participated in the event and gave a 10 minutes speech to the guests.

LONG BEACH - The Cambodian Coordinating Council is inviting the Khmer and Khmer-at-heart to its annual Cambodian New Year festival at El Dorado Regional Park on Saturday.
After 13 years at the site, organizers are getting pretty good at this thing. Steve Meng, president of Cam-CC said this year the organization had all its paperwork and payments in for the event months ahead of time.
The all-day affair will feature a full slate of entertainment, religious and cultural ceremonies, traditional food, carnival and traditional games and face painting for kids as well as merchandise and information booths.

This year, Cambodian New Year Festival 2012 Committee lead by Miss Davy Chea and, will bring us two parts of events.
Part-I (3pm - 7pm): will feature Khmer Classical Dance & Folk Dances and Traditional Games. The afternoon admission is FREE to watch the classical dances performed by the Cambodian Cultural Dance Troupe. The first time in Khmer New Year in San Jose history there will be a participation of 4 classical dance teachers during this New Year celebration, two teachers are from San Jose, one from Long Beach and one from Santa Rosa.
Part-II (8pm - Midnight): the social dance, will feature Angkor Wat Band and Ms Pinaly.
The celebration of "Khmer New Year" is a symbol to remind us of our culture and heritage. The Cambodian New Year Festival showcases the richness of Cambodian life in our community. The treasured folk culture and history of Cambodia delight the senses in colorful display of art, music, and dance.

A year of significant change in Cambodia / L'année du changement au Cambodge

To all SRP members and supporters, as well as to their relatives and friends,
I send my best wishes for the Khmer New Year which starts today, first day of year 2556 of the Buddhist era. May this Year of the Dragon bring you good health, happiness, prosperity and success.
I have already offered my New Year wishes to the entire Khmer people on SRP Radio in Phnom Penh (Candle Light program). I am now happy to address SRP members and supporters in particular because they constitute the vanguard force to bring about a much-needed change in Cambodia.
Yes, this Year of the Dragon will be a year of significant change in our country. The change will be triggered by a noticeable success for the SRP at the 3 June 2012 commune elections. This new political success for the SRP at the grassroots level related to the control of local governments, will prepare the ground for a decisive victory for Khmer patriotic and democratic forces at the national level in 2013.
Yes, this New Year of the Dragon will be a promising year for Cambodia!
