More than a thousand Khmer New Year revellers have crossed into Laos at Tropeang Kreal-Nong Nok Kien Broder Checkpoint in Stung Treng province during the three days festivities, reports everyday.com.

Mr. Thak Khamtan, chief of Tropeang Kreal-Nong Nok Kien Border Checkpoint, said that for the whole three days festivities there were 1021 Khmer tourists who have crossed to visit Laos. This is an increase of 30% from the 2008's figures.

The reasons for an increase in Khmer tourism to Laos was attributed to the construction of Sekong Bridge linking Cambodia's National Route No. 7 to Lao National Route No. 13, Mr. Thak Khamtann said.

During the three days festivities, there were only 750 Laotians who have visited Cambodia. Mr. Khamtan said this lower number is due the lack of tourism promotions by the Lao authority and the fear of insecurity and safety in Cambodia by Laotian tourists.
