Dear Editor,
I write regarding the letter [May 4] by Dr Naranhkiri Tith.
The King had his vision of protection, preservation and development of the nation. He led the movement because he needed his country out of wars.
However, he was not smart enough to know what would result from his movements.
Furthermore, many pressures also pressed on him. But we can understand about his real visions on leading the movement is to protect Cambodia.

Va Makara, to be a journalist you have to in the middle and write the true story do not write what you are thinking. One picture worths thousand of words, and every body has his/her own thought so do not conclure that you are rigth, thank you.
Now the judgement falls upon his head because he never ever admits his mistakes and his sins. He is still very arrogant, prideful, revengeful. Even now, going into his late moment of his life, no peace lives in his heart, no love transpires from what he is saying and doing. He think he is above all, even above God.
Anyway he is not a leader. Not even to say a good leader. He is very selfish king. What he was doing was for his own image and reputation.
He [idiot king Sihanouk ]should stay out of politics. HE lead Khmer people to nowhere but hell.
He (Sihanouk) led this war to a disaster. He took a revengeful act because of personal issue between the people who opposed him and ousted him.

Congratulation to the smart and not idiot person of Cambodia
If he, SihanoukVarman, had the strong vision of protection, preservation and development of Kampuchea, he should be remained a traditional King, not abdicated the throne in 1955 to selfishly control the ultimately sole power!
I think Sihanouk (not Varman) has a genuine love for the country. He tried his best to put Cambodia at peace, but it was difficult for him as Cambodia was in the vacuum of American imperialism and the Vietnam war. I think did make some mistakes especially by siding with KR instead of forming his own army to resit the U.S aided Lon Nol regime. Cambodia would have been different today if it was not for the KR.
Second, Sihanouk is a man of sensitivity much like Hun Sen. You can say anything about him/them as long as it is not negative, if so, then the anger will take over even they know they are wrong. To me, it's a childish. To compare the two leaders, I think Sihanouk somewhat has more love and genuine care for the country...

The worst mistake was back in 1991 when we have a universal election in Cambodia during UNTAC. Most of Cambodia didn't vote for CPP and they never want to have that Commie style government, they voted them out. But Sihanouk brought HUN SEN back to the arena and we have this cancer until present.
Why the hell he have to get HUN SEN back in? Eventhough YUON made HUN SEN to separate the three provinces under UNTAC it is impossible for him because he lost the election.

it seemed cambodia has a tradition or culture of depending on only one person as leader. it's a wake up called when the KR killed off many famous or good people, now it seemed cambodia lack of educated individuals. why? because khmer people only depend or look up to only a few individuals. i hope that will change for the better in cambodia with the new thinking and enlightment, etc... never so depend on only a handful of individuals again. keep in mind the so-called "safety in numbers", that is so true. god bless cambodia.
yes sihanouk should be called to the tribunal but he was being protected by hun sen's law. this is what i meant the leaders of cambodia, they don't let the court do its job independently for the due process of law; rather they are being protected of impunity. the impunity is the loophole that allows all these leader to abuse or not careful of their leadership. for example, hun sen says whatever he wants free of charge. if he is being sued and you see what kind of tactic he is using... i think cambodians must learn to select their leaders carefully and smartly.
you know co-dependent people are usually helpless after their partner passed away or something. cambodia should not worship only one individual anymore. what happen if that individual got into a car accident or died of heart attack, etc..., then you have no more smart people to look up to. so, the moral of the story is to never ever worship only a handful of individual again. create more smart people in cambodia for it will be good for the nation's future, prosperity, etc... god bless cambodia. take for example ms. ros sereysothea and mr. sin sissamouth were the most famous singers in cambodia during when they were alive; however, they did not take time to train the younger generation their secret to technique they used for singing beautiful songs. now after they passed away, cambodia is struggling to train and create more talented singers, etc... let that be a lesson for cambodia not to be so selfish again. train more people please. thank you.

OK...all you pro-Yankee don't know jack shit. It was Lon Nol who toppled HM Sihanouk with the help of the so-called the greatest democracy in the world to seize power from a democratically elected-government of Sangkum Reastr Nyum. So much for a gift of freedom and democracy from Uncle Sam. The worse part was Lon Nol miscalculated Viet Cong and Khmer Rouge strengths while indulging themselves in abundant American aids. Every household of a Lon Nol's top lieutenant is a gambling joint that squandered some 500 million USD of US aids down the drain. If Lon Nol did know better that he was so incompetent to ward off domestic and foreign invaders while maintaining a prosperous economy that HM Sihanouk built in the previous 15-year period, he should not have made a move to topple a democratically-elected government as he did on March 18, 1970. Had any Khmer scholar attempted to place the events of the 70’s from a Khmer point of view by asking: “What happened to Cambodia had Lon Nol not performed a coup as suggested by the US?” Would Khmer rouge’s coming to power that resulted in total destruction of the country be possible had this event did not occurred? Tith Narangkiri is full of shit to not see how much HM Sihanouk accomplished in the previous 15 years. OK may be a little longer that that. Full independence from France, reclaimed loss territories (Porsat, Battambong, Siem Reap, and Preah Vihear), prosperous economy comparable to that of the neighbors’, built modern infrastructure and monuments, competent and efficient civil service and military, hosted regional and international Olympic competition….just to name a few.
I will challenge anyone in this forum if any other Khmer leader since Jayavarman VII had accomplished so much in so short period of time. Well to be specific, can anyone here identify a monument, a building, a roadway or anything for that matter that was built during the Lon Nol and/or Pol Pot regimes. The answer is NONE what so ever. They were good for corruption and destruction. With the except of what Hun Sen’s trying to do right now rebuilding old infrastructures in the last 16 years, and he could not even get to all of what HM Sihanouk built in his era.
The only big mistake HM Sihanouk made was a miscalculation that he offered help to the Viet Cong in hopes that they might eventually return Kampuchea Krom back. But his plan was rudely interrupted by an arrogant Lon Nol with the help of his Yankee master who thought they could do better. But let me mention once more time, they came to power not through election but by means of a violent overthrow. I’m NOT always fond of the monarchy. Come to think of it, many recent Khmer kings had plundered so much territorial fortune to the neighbors. But having investigated what HM Sihanouk as an individual had done for his beloved country, he has my utmost respect and sincere admiration. Besides I am a Khmer, and I should be proud of an accomplished Khmer leader. My respect only goes for His Majesty Norodom Sihanouk NOT intended for any other members of the royal family since most of them are either incompetent, or engage in despicable lifestyles. Yes you can say HM Sihanouk brought Pol Pot to power, but that is a natural reaction when your responsibilities given by the people are so violently wrestled away from you, you will attempt to gain them back. It’s a natural reaction. But Pol Pot took the opportunity to wrestle power away from HM Sihanouk. That’s the reason you heard on the radio or saw HM Sihanouk wearing that dreaded black outfit during the Khmer rouge regime. If anyone can attribute that HM Sihanouk intended to bring the Khmer Rouge to destroy his own country from hearing his voice on the radio and seeing him rubbing elbows with Pol Pot, why can you not attribute the US for offering support to the Khmer rouge in all of the later 70’s and 80’s at UN and elsewhere. I’m sure you will find a U-Tube clip of an American official saying that they were supporting the Khmer rouge during this period. Why can you not blame a Khmer and do so to a foreigner for a change? Or may be you need to take Khmer National Pride 101 to have some reasonable sense of Khmer history.

The U.S. and China were against the the USSR, and that was why they supported the Khmer Rouge and other smaller Khmer factions in their fight against the Viet - USSR's proxy. Those countries had no obligation like a Khmer King to feel any remorse for having done so, just the same as now that they do not care if they are supporting a dictator or not. Sihanouk made it personal to see that Khmers who did not or could not run to join the KR pay the the heaviest and ultimate price for his revenge. Up until now, his blood gets boiled when the subject of Lon Nol Khmers is brought up.
