The ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) has scored an expected victory in the weekend's inaugural provincial, district and municipal council elections.

It won a clear majority of seats on the new administrative bodies.

Voting tallies released by the National Election Committee (NEC) show the Cambodia People's Party winning 76 percent of the votes counted so far at the provincial level, with the Sam Rainsy Party coming in a distant second with 19 percent.

The Norodom Ranariddh Party and Funcinpec - the only other two parties to contest the election - trailed a long way behind.

The Phnon Penh Post quotes NEC secretary-general Tep Nytha as saying the general atmosphere on election day was "peaceful" and no political parties had lodged any complaints about irregularities.

The election is a chance for the opposition to whine; otherwise, they have nothing worthwhile to do.

It's not hard for Hun Sen and his CPP party to win (election after election) because they're in control of eveything - the media, NEC,election staff, etc.

It's better if the opposition parties don't participate and let Hun Sen and his CPP gang "F" up the country. Let the people rise up and deal with them!
