Hundreds of soldiers on the Thai and Cambodian sides of the northern border are amassed near Preah Vihear temple, but in 1962, another kind of battle altogether was underway.
At that time, Thailand or Cambodia contested each other’s rights to the temple. But a battle in international court, fought by lawyers, not in the jungles by soldiers, brought Preah Vihear temple under Cambodian authority.
“When Cambodia won the lawsuit, Thailand recognized the verdict of the court, then Thailand sent to the UN a map that Thailand drew unilaterally,” said Sean Pengse, president of the Cambodian Border Committee, a group that advocates for border integrity.
Both sides now have different maps, leading to border contests, but Preah Vihear temple squarely belongs to Cambodia.
Sean Pengse said Cambodia should follow the 1962 example in its current border dispute with Thailand, which has been ongoing for nearly a year and has cost the lives of at least three Cambodian and three Thai soldiers.
Cambodian and Thai officials have said they can solve the problem bilaterally, but it has proven intractable in the face of political unrest in Thailand.

good advice, mr. sean pengse. good point, why waste our khmer lives when it can be dealt with decisively in the international court of law. i guarantee you the siem thugs will lose all the time in the court of law! like our gov't said, we have many choices to take them to court again because of their unilateral map which cause this conflict in the first place since the preah vihear temple case had been settled already; now, it's their unilateral map that cambodia cannot agree to, never! we lost a lot already, no more loss for cambodia!
Yes, Thai governments have to be responsible for their action. This time we should sue Thai to pay for our soldiers' life, properties damaged by Thai troops, and all expenses we paid in order to counter Thai blatantly aggression lately.

Plus, no point to contest with Thailand on the temple and surrounded land because it legally belong to Cambodia already.
good point, in today's world, nations often retort to law suit against injustice caused by another nation, not so much war or military anymore. but don't rule that out completely though because war is a last resort anyway, when push comes to shove! god bless cambodia.
The stupid current government CPP don't want to use the 1962 court ruling due to fear of bringing up the issue relating to vietnam ocupying khmer territory on the east side.
Since the cpp won't do it. Khmer all around need to put pressure and bring up this true fact and the demand of bring issue relating to thailand and vietnam. Another word by using the 1962 ruling and map will kill two birds with one stone. But khmer will need to bring about world attention through international court and international media.
More power to iran and its people. Khmer need to unite and utilizes the same tool and method.

We ALL know the most logical step is for the Khmer government to go back to The Hague for adequate third party arbitration to settle the lingering technicality but why either the Khmer or the Thai governments refused to do so, claiming "bilateral" mechanism would allow to settle the difference? Such adamant refusal to use a third party for arbitration can only prove both governments have something to hide from their people, i.e. any secret arrangement signed before???
