A REPRESENTATIVE from the International Parliamentary Union (IPU) is to attend the trial of Sam Rainsy Party lawmaker Mu Sochua on Friday, during which she will face defamation charges filed by Prime Minister Hun Sen.
The IPU, a worldwide organisation of parliamentarians, has designated Franklin Drilon, a former Philippine Senate president, as its official representative in the case, Mu Sochua told the Post Monday.
Mu Sochua said Monday that Drilon would arrive in Cambodia on Thursday.
"That the IPU is coming to observe us is a show of responsibility in front of our assembly because we are a member of the IPU. They defend all of us when we are under pressure, no matter what party we're in," she said.
Council of Ministers spokesman Phay Siphan said that the government would welcome the presence of Drilon, but he also said the representative should observe the proceedings objectively.
"It is good that the IPU is coming to observe Mu Sochua's case, but it should not attack or speak without a factual basis," he said.
Press crackdown
Meanwhile, the Southeast Asian Press Alliance and 11 other groups working for the promotion and protection of free expression in the region have written an open letter to Hun Sen asking that he cease the current crackdown on government critics.
"We ... are gravely concerned by a palpably deteriorating freedom and civil rights environment in Cambodia," said the letter, dated Friday.
"We urge the government of Cambodia to cease this campaign threatening freedom of expression and the fundamental rights of its citizens."

Khmer will rejoice and celebrate when the hanoi cpp crashes and fall! Nothing lasts forever, not even the CPP or evil hanoi.
Cambodian people will not fight alone when we have a strong woman like Mu Sochua.
I am wholeheartedly supporting the intellectual struggle of Ms. Sochua.
Thanks Drilon for your gut...
Bravo Dr. Drilon, this is right way that you come to Cambodia, thus you will have chance to advise Mam Mu that "Oh My Dear Mu, please be calme down and be patient while you are in Prey Saw jail with Mr. Chakra!! and please dear Mu, dont unbutton your prison-gown in front of your those jailed-mate, otherwise there will be many defamation cases rised up against those poor prisioners "...

Under Cambodian People's Party Hun Sen Khmer Rouge Regime, no criminals that has been committed all of these crimes above within Hun Sen Khmer Rouge government have ever been brought to justice.
I do not believe that the international community should have their hands on our judicial system, since the Cambodian judges are more than capable of interpreting the law without other countries meddling our justice system.
PPU
I don't believe the court system in Cambodia is capable to do anything under a dictator Hun Sen.
This is not an impartial characterization of our judicial system in accordance with your statement (above), since you're succinctly demonstrating the lack of understanding of the Cambodian judicial system, Mr. 12.43 PM.

The Disgrace Mu Sochua, her day in Cambodia is number. What IPU can do by just sending Mr. Franklin Drilon to observe in the defamation trial between Prime Minister Hun Sen versus MP Mu Sochua on 24 July 2009?? Despite IPU sends all members to observe this trail, it won't change the verdict of Cambodia's Court!! I want to see what disgrace Mu Sochua's face look like when the Court delivers the verdict on 24 July 2009? Will she brave by not afraid going to jail as she always said or run away to the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh for helping her? In Cambodia, the more she jumps too high, when she falls back, it will hit her every hard. I am doubt that after 24 July 2009, she will be able to continue her political career in Cambodia again.
Cheers
1;04pm.
Why can' she when Hun Sen already promised he will stay until 99 years old?
For a strong woman who defends herself from being harrassed by a power grabber, dicttaor, killer and a crack smoker is disgrace?
Where did you learn from?
Sound like someone is speaking fluently Khmer shipping from Hanoi to make such stupid comments.
1:13PM
I do agree with you wrote that Mu Sochua is a strong woman. If she's weak woman, she won't able to cope with a white man and have three kids. Indeed, she is not only a strong woman but also have good skill on the bed as well.Hahahaha
This situation is generating increasingly critical media coverage all over the world.
More and more local cambodians are aware of the injustice and politicised cambodian judicial system.
The harder the one eye hyena yelps, the harder the negative boomerang effect on world opinion.Especially as he is courting world leaders to polish hi tarnished reputation past and present.
He will stand one day in front of the world court for crime against humanity.
1:44 PM,
I don't think white men are better than Asian men. Just that the Asian men like you love to fuck whores then bring aid disease to your wife and children. Does it sound good? Besides your Youn women as you always prefer are tighted butt but their boobs are flat. Unless you bang her with your eyes closed. But if you keep closing you may bang your own mother.
Cambodia will continue to expose it real nature to the world.
Judgment will be upon the head of the leaders and rulers and calamities will be upon ordinary people as a consequence of their past and present crime against their own nationals.
To relent it judgment by inescapable natural laws the current injustice, oppression and À- petite-dose killing of Khmers should be stopped and actual leaders should repent and be put out of harm.

The world including khmers is still unsuspected of the current human tragedy in the making.
