Thai Web site reignites spat over territory

A NEW Web site launched by Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Saturday has put itself into the forefront of the current border dispute, claiming parts of Cambodia as "lost" Thai territory.

According to local media reports, the new Web site (www.ilovethailand.org), which is intended to improve Thailand's national image, includes a video showing the country losing sections of territory to France, Britain and China.

The video also reportedly describes sections of present-day Cambodia - including Siem Reap, Battambang and the disputed Preah Vihear temple - as lost parts of Thailand.

When contacted Thursday, officials ridiculed the view of history aired on the Web site, saying the Thais were bending the truth for political purposes.

"They are twisting the facts of history. It is completely exaggerated," said Phay Siphan, spokesman for Council of Ministers.

"This is a chance for us to explain that the Thais are using history for their political affairs."

Phay Siphan said there would be a response from Cambodian historians to the claims contained on the Web site but that the Council of Ministers would not take any action on the issue.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Koy Kuong said he had not seen the video, but that he would investigate the claims and take action if necessary.

"I will ask the relevant officials to collect information from the Thai government's Web site and translate it. Then we will discuss it later," he said Thursday.

In 1794, Thailand - then known as Siam - annexed Siem Reap and Battambang provinces from the declining Khmer kingdom, but the territories were returned following a March 1907 treaty between Thailand and France.

Thailand retook the territories with Japanese support in 1940-41, but they reverted to Franco-Cambodian control after the war.

Thai Embassy officials could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Khmer Empire , ancient kingdom of SE Asia. In the 6th cent. the Cambodians, or Khmers, established an empire roughly corresponding to modern Cambodia and Laos . Divided during the 8th cent., it was reunited under the rule of Jayavarman II in the early 9th cent.; the capital was established in the area of Angkor by the king Yasovarman I (r. 889-900). The Angkor period (889-1434), the golden age of Khmer civilization, saw the empire at its greatest extent; it held sway over the valleys of the lower Menam (in present-day Thailand) and the lower Mekong (present-day Cambodia and Vietnam), as well as N into Laos.

The Khmer civilization was largely formed by Indian cultural influences. Buddhism flourished side by side with the worship of Shiva and of other Hindu gods, while both religions coalesced with the cult of the deified king. In the Angkor period many Indian scholars, artists, and religious teachers were attracted to the Khmer court, and Sanskrit literature flourished with royal patronage.

The great achievement of the Khmers was in architecture and sculpture. The earliest known Khmer monuments, isolated towers of brick, probably date from the 7th cent. Small temples set on stepped pyramids next appeared. The development of covered galleries led gradually to a great elaboration of plan. Brick was largely abandoned in favor of stone. Khmer architecture reached its height with the construction of Angkor Wat by Suryavarman II (r. 1113-50) and Angkor Thom by Jayavarman VII (r. 1181-c.1218). Sculpture, which also prospered at Angkor, showed a steady development from relative naturalism to a more conventionalized technique. Bas-reliefs, lacking in the earliest monuments, came to overshadow in importance statues in the round; in the later stages of Khmer art hardly a wall was left bare of bas-reliefs, which conveyed in the richness of their detail and vitality a vivid picture of Khmer life.

The Khmers fought repeated wars against the Annamese (see Annam ) and the Chams; in the early 12th cent. they invaded Champa , but, in 1177, Angkor was sacked by the Chams. After the founding of Ayuthia (c.1350), Cambodia was subjected to repeated invasions from Thailand, and the Khmer power declined. In 1434, after the Thai captured Angkor, the capital was transferred to Phnom Penh ; this event marks the end of the brilliance of the Khmer civilization.

The Khmer Empire was a powerful Kingdom in South-East Asia. Its major architectural works (temples and sculptures) are located in present day Cambodia, where the capital of the empire was located. However, during long periods of time the Khmer ruled over parts of present day Thailand, Laos and Vietnam.

Like other major ethnic groups in the history of South-East Asia (the Thais, the Mons, The Chams) the Khmer are thought to have descended in the prehistoric period from the river valleys in Eastern Tibet and Southwest China. The Khmer appear first on the scene (in Chinese records) in the second half of the 6th century A.D. with the Kingdom known as Chenla.

The Angkor era became the central area of settlement from the early 9th century up to the demise of the Khmer Empire in the early 15th century. The Empire itself had its ups and downs, and remained a single authoritarian state for only limited time periods, when strong military leaders where on the throne. Important leaders contributed by building new temple complexes in the Angkor area. Angkor Wat was constructed in the early 12th century under Suryavarman II. Jayavarman VII, considered to be the last great leader of the Khmer, built his new capital at Angkor Thom.

During the reign of Suryavarman II the Khmer Empire incorporated most of present day Thailand. The Mon Kingdom of Haripunchai in Northern Thailand (Lamphun) was conquered. After the death of King Suryavarman II the Khmer Empire was somewhat in disarray and suffered military defeats at the hand of the Chams, who briefly incorporated Kambuja into the Champa Kingdom.

Jayavarman VII reasserted the Khmer and carried out many building projects. After Jayavarman VII the Khmer Empire entered into decline. The Thai Kingdom of Sukhothai managed to repel the Khmer. The Empire was threatened by the Mongols (but not annexed) under Kublai Khan in 1283.
The Thais became the persistent enemy of the Khmer in the following few centuries. The Kingdom of Ayutthaya conquered Angkor in 1431. Thereafter the center of the remaining Khmer Kingdom moved south to present day Phnom Penh.

Since the Khmer reigned for long periods over extended areas of present day Thailand, Thailand has a substantial number of important Khmer monuments on its territory, mainly in its Northeastern Region (such as Phonom Rung and Muang Tam in Buriram Province, Phimai in Nakhon Ratchasima province, Muang Singh in Kanchanaburi province). Any look around the old temples of Sukhothai, Lopburi and Ayutthaya will also reveal strong Khmer architectural influences.

Not only did they took our territories, but also Khmer Intellectuals. Every time they sacked Angkor, they brought back all Khmer Intellectuals. As time went by, those Khmer gradually lost their identity and turned back against us. Some of them helped create the Thai language, and some even helped create fake the stories by considering themself as superiors to all Khmers in present Cambodia, Khmer Krom and in Laos. That's why they have, but all enemies.

How long they're going to last depend on how they change their behaviors and the way they educate their children.

Yes, I'm supporting your comments. They gathered all sort of Khmer's back to Bangkok and even monks. Monk that created Thai's alphabet too.

Khmer will regain its power back in near future because those people under YOUN and Thai will rise up and rejoin the Khmer.

They looted and took all kind of sculptures and scripts, tradition, culture. Even the royal dances, they have them but never have all of tricks like Khmer's dances. Every time the sacked Angkor Wat all those valuable stones are gone.

Like someone mention before, almost 90% of Thailand have Khmer's blood in them.

Preah Ko Preah Keo was one of the story that Khmer regretted that they were fooled by SIAM to cut down the bamboo fences and picked up those Prak Snouk (Silver) but at the end SIAM took all the silver and Preah Ko Preah Keo in danger and expose to SIAM thief and they captured them.

note the key terms in the article above: thailand (siem) "returned" khmer lands and territories they "annexed" from cambodia. to say the least, these key words indicated the fact that they (siem thugs or thieves) had stolen these lands and territories from cambodia during the dark period of cambodian history. and what a shame for them (siem thugs) to claim that it was their lost lands that cambodia took back. what an ignorant or naive race they are!

Anonymous said...

remember these were khmer lands and territories they stole from cambodia and only returned when the world make them return khmer lands back because it belonged to khmer originally but they annexed and stole from cambodia and khmer people during the dark period, of course! shame on them, siem thieves!!!

Anonymous said...

we all know from history that the siem thugs also stole our people and dancers from angkor after they invaded us and then retreated along with our skilled people they took prisoners of lootings, really. it's in the history book for the fact, how can they deny that! in fact people when first saw thailand and cambodia seem to think the two nations are alike and strikingly similar. well, that's because the siem thieves stole from cambodia to make the world think it's theirs. all we have to do is study the history of khmer and southeast asia for that matter and then ask question which nation existed first? i'm sure the we all know it was cambodia's past glory of the great khmer angkor civilization came before today's thailand. so, there!!!! that should shut them up for a fact! there's no such thing as thailand, vietnam and laos during the khmer civilization period that lasted over 500 years or so; however the history of cambodia go longer even before 802AD, the year the first great khmer god-king preah bat jayavarman II founded the great khmer angkor civilization. siem kok then was non-existance, however later on they were just mercenary soldiers of the khmer empire when our god-kings let them settle on our territory then. they were nothing; so, they owed their very existance as today's thailand from borrowing heavily from our great khmer ancestors. so there!

I am very sure that there will be a real Thai leader who will tell the truth soon or after.

If Cambodia acts correctly, there will be more ashamed on Thais and their leadership.

The more we read these stupid comments, the more we regret the past as to why we had to help these stupid Khmers survived the Khmer Rouge genocide in the 70's and the 80's. We should not have provided crucial shelters in our homeland to these ungrateful, stupid Khmers Look at yourself these days-- what you are. Thailand has never begged for anything from the Khmers. OK?.

4:15 AM

I want to tell you that Your Siams are ungrateful, not Khmers. WHY???

Because our Angkorian Kings allowed your ancestors to settle on our land along the Chao Praya river, then when they became strong, they returned their heads to bite the owner (khmers).

You should ask yourself before barking, who were my ancestors, and where were they from?

In 70s and 80s, Thailand killed, mistreated, tortured, and sin a lot of Khmer refugees. Thailand also took much advantages from them through the UNHCR..the world know this.

Khmers follow the Buddha's principles. We don't want to revenge or take back what we lost, but Thailand still make the continually trouble to us...

YES, YOU ARE SO RIGHT. THAILAND HAS NEVER BEGGED ANYTHING FROM KHMERS, BUT THAILAND ROBS AND THIEVES FROM KHMERS (LAND, CULTURAL PROPERTIES...) SINCE THE SIAMESE ANCESTORS TILL THEIR CHILDREN.

THEREFORE, SIAMS ARE REALLY CROCODILES (INGRATE), AND THIEF. YOU KNOW?

Please tell your government to withdraw all of Thailand's aggressive troops from our land and then we can strengthen the tie of bilateral relations to develop the two countries, this is good deal!!!

STOP YOUR BLACK AMBITION, OK?

I think 4:15 did not know the picture of history. I am sorry he feel this way... I suggest he should study more about the origin of his country- but not from Thai history book. Thailand has borrow so much from Khmer Civilization during the Khmer Empire period. You can refuse the truth but he can't deny it. Fact is fact; everyone knows except the people of Thailand learning from the make-up history.
