The army has cancelled overnight stays by troops with their Cambodian counterparts at Wat Kaew Sikha Khiri Sawara for fear of them being held hostage.
Ten troops were stationed at the temple day and night in the disputed 4.6-square-kilometre area.
They were recently ordered to leave the temple after finishing their daytime tasks and to return again the next morning, said a source with the Suranaree Task Force.
Wat Kaew Sikha Khiri Sawara is at the foot of the mountain where the disputed Preah Vihear temple is located.
Since July 15 last year, 10 soldiers have been deployed at Wat Kaew Sikha Khiri Sawara. Another 20 Thai troops are stationed around the temple.
"In the event of rising border tensions, those Thai troops [living at the temple] could have been in danger," the source said.
The Cambodian troops have occupied the temple for several years and tended to think the temple was theirs, the source said.
Despite a previous agreement between Thai and Cambodian troops that the temple is an unarmed zone, the Cambodian troops had yet to drop their weapons, but demanded the Thai troops strictly follow the agreement.
"Since it's a policy, we have to follow," said the source, conceding the withdrawal of the Thai troops from the temple could be perceived by the Cambodian side as a victory.
Another agreement adopted by both sides is joint border patrolling in the Phu Makhuea area where Thai and Cambodian troops have clashed repeatedly due to misunderstandings, said the source.
The joint patrol unit consists of 18 soldiers from each side. Thailand and Cambodia keep about 3,000 troops each in the disputed area.
Army chief Anupong Paojinda said yesterday the army stood firm in wanting to resolve border disputes with Cambodia through peaceful negotiations.
"We live next to each other and can never move away. Should Thailand get the Preah Vihear temple back if we fight? The answer is no.
"So we have to work with Cambodia to develop the temple and make use of it," he said.
House Speaker Chai Chidchob yesterday met visiting Cambodian National Assembly President Heng Samrin and discussed the Thai-Cambodian border dispute.
Mr Chai asked his Cambodian counterpart to speed up negotiations regarding settlement of the disputed area.

You are not deserve to be Khmer, Khmer Australian, or Khmer American...etc if you are not support or donate money to SRP and dares to support the CPP. Despite, we have hidden this policy because Hun Sen and CPP can mocking on us but SRP and our supporters will carry this policy until we win the election. In addition, whoever dares to post any topic in this forum which doesn't support SRP, we will use very bad languages to hunt you down. We are the best in using bad languages against Hun Sen and the CPP.
The opposition (SRP) has no policy to force any Khmer to support us, but if any Khmer dares to support the CPP, SRP and our supporters will brand you as Youn.

We like democracy and always respect the freedom of speech, but we really hate whoever support Hun Sen's regime and the CPP.
I do agree the idea that whoever supports the CPP must not call him/herself as Khmer. Khmer have to support SRP and donate money as much as you can to help our party in fighting with CPP.

Srey Deuk should let our soldier take those 10 Thais into prisoner of war and demanding all Thais soldiers withrawal from our lands imediately! if khmer stay inside Thai-lands like that, they probably did the same thing alread!!

The temple is Khmer built and Khmers monks have been living and practicing Buddhism there for years and years until Preah Vichea become a World Heritage site, then the Thai trouble makers come. Reveal your source... Cambodians are not cheap to invade and take some one else's land. Please be clear to your people and do not mislead them. Speak the truth... Have some creditability in your reporting.
i think anything to educate the unruly thai is good because it is them they cause problem with us. they often violated the intenational law, to say the least! it is obvious, given cambodia's preah vihear is located there! because without the khmer ancient temple there, i don't think it is such a problem over there! so, this says a lot about the thai or siem intention of stealing from cambodia. who would deny that! khmer must all stand firm with the border demarcations! god bless cambodia.

This message is for Yim Sovann, SRP spokeperson were wrong about housing eviction in democracy country. when the owner don't pay their mortgage about three month the bank notify them to move out or they will move by force(police). There were not much different from Cambodia; here the police authorized to shoot suspect if they carried smal knifes, baton, fork, they were considered as dangerous weapons. What do Yim Sovann and SRP member think about Cambodian law enforcement?

i know, that's why i kept saying they cry wolf a lot, meaning they have they trick or fool the world with their victim mode. enough already, the world should and would investigate any allegation, unless they are stupid,too. sometimes, i wonder what planet these opposition party members come from? they need to open their eyes and see the world, i mean the entire world, and stop abusing and hurting cambodia. not all khmer people deserve this kind of deprivation and punishment. if you want to punish, use the law only and only punish those who are actually responsible by use of evidence, that is; and stop barking at the wrong tree for a change! not all khmer people in cambodia are bad. cambodia and our beautiful khmer people deserve better than this. we don't need trouble-maker to satisfy our needs and wants. get use to it. there are more to cambodia than you and I, you know! think about it. get settled down already. make peace with cambodia so we all can enjoy god's creation in cambodia and the planet for that matter! enough already! god bless cambodia.
