On her return trip to Phnom Penh this Friday, SRP MP Mu Sochua escaped from the reporters at the Phnom Penh International Airport. She seems to remain quiet and trying to defuse the tense political situation, unlike when she was in the US.

Unlike from the past, Mrs. Mu Sochua, who used to criticize the violations of human rights, escaped from reporters instead this Friday. However, in her comment provided to the Light of Candle radio station run by the SRP, Mrs. Mu Sochua seems to defuse her criticisms against the government at a forum in the US recently.

In the almost 7-minute interview with the Light of Candle radio, Mrs. Mu Sochua confirmed that, in her testimony to the US Congress and the Cambodian people, she did not ask the US to cut aid to Cambodia, and neither did she defamed anyone. Quite to the contrary, she wants [to see] the US aids to Cambodia to be quality aids that benefit all the Cambodian people in terms of health service, education and freedom of expression, etc…

Seemingly trying to defuse the [tense] situation between the opposition party and the government, Mrs. Mu Sochua stressed that the SRP is an important partner in the construction of democracy. The SRP is fighting [the government], but an important partner of the government in all aspects.

During the wait for the arrival of Mrs. Mu Sochua at the Phnom Penh International Airport this morning, besides the presence of reporters, US embassy representatives were also seen observing the situation as well. The US embassy in Cambodia was asked by US representatives to follow up and provide refuge to human rights activists, as well as politician – including Mrs. Mu Sochua – who provided their testimonies to the US Congress human rights commission recently.

Nevertheless, Phay Siphan, the secretary of state and spokesman of the Council of Ministers, said that, in the name of the government, he welcomes Mrs. Mu Sochua’s and the SRP’s new standing.

Phay Siphan added that, the government, as well as the CPP, always welcomes any partnership for the construction of the country, and turning it into a plural democracy country.

A few hours following the return of Mrs. Mu Sochua to Phnom Penh, the prosecutor of the Appeal Court issued her a court summon, asking her to show up in court to provide her clarification on 02 October in regards to the appeal on her lawsuit against Hun Xen for defaming her in Kampot.

To fight with the criminal communist sometimes, we need to be quiet; but not silent.

This is the test. The criminal getting scare as well. they send so many people; just to protest against Mrs. Sok Hua.

Well, these criminal communists are afraid too.

Soon or later each of them will go to see Hok Lundi.

The fight for freedom, social justice, and democracy for defenseless Khmer people must go on. It must go on ceaselessly.

This despotic government must be stopped, otherwise Cambodia will become a second Laos soon. We as decent Khmers must stand up strong to challenge to Hun Sen's and his criminal clique's despicable game of turning Cambodia upside down.

well, it's smart of her. after all, she had made her point heard loud and clear. at least it is good that everyone in the world are aware.

It looks so stupid for Mu Sochua to go back to Cambodia and keep her mouth shut like this. Stong legs must show her muscles or just live peacefully and quietly in the US.

She really put herself in the deep hole, i hated to say it again and again, she shouldn't mess with Hun Sen at the first place, it's just like, rolling the egg against the rock...

I agree with comments 7:14am above! if she come and keep her mouth shut, why don't stay at US? it's much better of that way...

Anonymous said...

I would stay at US, i wouldn't come back to cambodia, unless i won, but i still continue to work from US to help khmer people...

I hope you have a good rest from the jet leg. You have a great passion to fight for human rights issue. It takes a lot of guts for someone to do this kind of work. It is risky, but very good for the underprivillege. You are the pioneer for Cambodians. One day the poor will see the light at the end of the tunnel because of you.

Sochua you are our hero, you can restore Khmer democracy just like that, so, keep going, Cambodian need you. However, this time you have to be smarter than you original are. Try to give constructive criticism to the opposition leaders by not getting into personal level. Mainly, ignore all personal conflicts but try to reframe on what is right and wrong. Be focusing on to restore law and order so that it can be effective for Cambodian people. Hun Sen on the other hand needs to respect all members of parliament in every way by allowing all political leaders to debate to reach a common goal and common interest. In other words giving the results of what need to be done, e.g. creating a welfare system to protect all individuals from harm and that everyone is equally important (one death is too many), focusing on building new infrastructures such as safe trafficking, housing, hospitals, family day care centre, schools, universities- working in partnership with overseas Universities like- Griffith Uni or Harvest Uni if possible. If USA, Aust, Singapore, Japan can create a safe haven for their people, so can we! And at the end of the day we can also welcome them just like they have always welcome us to their homeland, Good luck everyone, I love you all.

"Hybrid Democracy" (following google, my translator)
Congratulations to the unique personality Khmer "these days" which dares to show all the bad governance after the Cambodian protectorate.
Be aware that our neighbors have been fortified post "Geneva (1954)" that from our strategic and political errors in successive governments. And worse, after the Paris-1991 "
We're so far under a new dynasty HS (= off) which is just outside the service of good governance and genuine.
Because for any despot, any popular protest is only "crime".
HUA Bravo to the whole nation and race Khmer still oppressed! I am among the compatriots on your side as at first.

There is no law to protect the people in Cambodia; there is no law to protect the opposition parties in Cambodia and that's why Mu Sochua kept her voice low. However, there is law for protecting the illegal Vietcong immigrants.

It's easy to make political statements charactering the well documented improvements in Khmer society including development of new laws and democratic institutions since 1993 as imperfect, but her role is to work in the National Assembly, a democratically elected institution, in a constructive fashion to solve the very problems she complains about- but I guess working everyday as a member of NA is not very glamorous and lucrative.
