Soldiers kill boy caught logging in Thailand, district governor says.
Oddar Meanchey officials Sunday accused Thai soldiers of shooting a Cambodian teenager and burning him alive.
Yon Rith, 16, was killed after Thai armed forces accused him of illegally felling trees, said Thon Nol, governor of Samrong district in Oddar Meanchey province.
Thon Nol said Yon Rith was first arrested and then burned. Another teenager from the same village in Kon Kreal commune, 18-year-old Mao Kleung, was also shot and seriously wounded, he said, but villagers managed to carry him to Cambodian territory, and he is is now in an Oddar Meanchey hospital.
Officials on Sunday denounced the violence as "cruel" acts carried out on unarmed villagers.
"Why did they burn a person alive? [The armed forces] should have arrested them if they did anything wrong in Thailand," said Pich Ratana, a Cabinet official in Oddar Meanchey.
"Our armed forces did not shoot Thai citizens when they were hunting animals in the Cambodian forest. They just arrested them and sent them back, but Thai soldiers do cruel things to innocent Cambodians," Pich Ratana said.
Thon Nol said officials would discuss the incident today.
"We are looking for all measures to assist the victims as well as actions on the Thai authority," Thon Nol said.
Thai Embassy officials could not be reached for comment Sunday.
Nanh Sovann, a Cambodian military officer who has worked with the Thai military, said Sunday he had heard of the incident but was waiting to see an official report before intervening.
The victim's family recovered his charred body and took it to their village for a funeral the day he was shot, Thon Nol said.
Thai officials have previously taken a heavy hand against Cambodians accused of illegal logging on Thai territory, particularly along the Oddar Meanchey border.
In August, 12 Cambodians were arrested along the border on suspicion of illegally logging.
Their disappearance initially prompted fears they had been killed, but the Thais have since revealed the men are in detention.
Two other men, however, were discovered dead last month. The Thai military said soldiers fired on the group in self-defence.

A sentence I used to describe how Thais treated Khmer refugees when we were living in some refugee camps in Thailand after we had escaped the Khmer Rouge. Thais treated us in a similar way as the Khmer Rouge did, excep that during day time when the UNHCR personel were on duty in the camps, they wouldn't dare to do anything much harmful to us.
These soldiers are not even Thai at all their Khmer Surin of Khmer descent, and Isan of Laotian descent. They have to take from their authorities in order to do so. There is NO WAY any single Thai will get involved for this, so they won't disgrace themselves.

A few months ago, about 4 or 5 of these siem soldiers sneaked in across the border to Cambodia in civilian clothes. They were caught by the Cambodian border police. Obviously they were there gathering intelligence but the police cut them lose and let them back to their side of the border without much of a question. That was before the April clash. How stupid that was! Unbelievable. Spies are shot during war time or life in prison during no war is declared.

1:26AM - I am not 12:08AM. You’re right we should have some evidences to prove it before making any accusation. But having some personal experiences and historical knowledge with the border violence, I can say that there are some truth and merit to the claim made by 12:08AM. Many people living in Thailand are Khmer decent, unfortunately they have been brainwashed by the Thai education system to think they are from a different race.
What we should tell our Khmer villagers is to arm themselves with AK47 whenever they are in the dispute area. The thai soldiers will not be able to treat our people this way if our people have weapon to defend themselves.

I said it once before and I saiy it again. If Thailand has a war with Cambodia, Kmer Surin soldiers will join Tahis. Kmer Surins are quite different from Khmer Kampuchea Krom who do not join Yuons to fight Khmer, and folks already know why. There some truth as 12:08AM said, according to my experince when I were Kamput refugee camp. Thai government sent some Khmer Surin police (his man is ah Chorn) to monitor us in the camp. They treated us just the same real Thais did.

Wow, this is very appalling to hear this sad news. I'd like to express my deepest condolence to the family of this victim. I hope HUN SEN government contact the Thai government to find out who is the perpetrator or the culprit.
This is very inhumane.
Well, regarding a child got burned alive by the Thais, I believe both side are under investigated now due to the incident. I felt so sad when I heard from this KI news. I may be heading down to Kon Kreal commune if I don’t have to work the next day. Poor son, will see what the outcome is. I hope Cambodian who lives abroad should pay the respect and contribute to the family if you could, but let see what’s going to happen next.
