PHNOM PENH—Cambodia's elderly former king Norodom Sihanouk said he has lived too long and wishes to die as soon as possible, according to a personal handwritten note on his website Thursday.
In a royal message, Sihanouk said his father, Suramarit, died at the age of 64, and his great-grandfather, Sisowath, died at the age of 83.
"But for me, who sincerely wants to die as near in the future as possible, I have lived too long," wrote the former king, who will turn 87 at the end of this month.
The ex-monarch, who has been in Beijing since last month for routine medical treatment, went on to say in his message, dated October 2, that the "lengthy longevity bears on me like an unbearable weight."
Sihanouk went on to thank compatriots who have wished that he lives to be over 100 years old, but asked them to refrain from wishing him a long life.
"What I want is to die as soon as possible, without having to infringe on the teachings of the (esteemed) Buddha who forbade suicide," he wrote.
Sihanouk has suffered from a number of ailments, including cancer, diabetes and hypertension.
One of Asia's longest-serving monarchs, he abruptly quit the throne in October 2004 in favor of his son, Sihamoni, citing old age and health problems.
Despite abdicating, Sihanouk remains a prominent figure in Cambodia and often uses messages on his website to comment on matters of state.

It is a good idea for you all to want to die like Norodom Sihanouk. Because he had cost so many death and suffering to our peoples. And lost of our territory.
Norodom Sihanouk is a good example.
When Norodom Sihanouk associated with the communist the Khmer peoples lost of many lives, suffering and lost of territory.
Now, AH Hun Sen associated with the communist China and the communist Vietnam, as of result we continue to loose more of our territory (Koh Tral our biggest island).
I am very sure that we are going to loose more of our territory to Vietnam and Thailand as long as AH Hun Sen is in power.
I am hoping that one day, Cambodian have a new government that associate with a democracy country (United States).

You are deadly wrong. The Rouge was created by the Vietnamese leader named Phan Boi Chau, Ho Chi Minh's god father. The Vietnamese Rouge, Laos Rouge and the Khmer Rouge were created as undergorund force during French colony behind the french back for the purposes of taking Indochina for themselves. The Vietnamese rouge were supported by Soviet and China. King Sihanouk and Lon Nol both did the revolution to free Cambodia by having Lon Nol with the US and Sihanouk with China instead of letting the Vietnamese burn all Khmers alive like they did to KK. Lon Nol lost the opportunit because his army there were many Vietnamese spies in it.
King Sihanouk didn't create KR when it was already created.
You must be too stupid to believe that King Sihanouk wanted to kill his own people. Without his own people there would be no Kingdom of Cambodia.
