A new statement addressed to the Cambodian people was issued from France regarding the anniversary of the 1991 Paris Peace Agreements on Cambodia.
The Paris-based Cambodia’s Border Committee (CBC) issued a statement dated 24 October 2009, indicating that Cambodia does not have true peace as stipulated in the Paris Peace Accords which was signed by 19 signatory countries on 23 October 1991.
The CBC claimed that the entire Cambodian people living in Cambodia cannot receive true peace as long as Vietnam and Thailand continue to violate on the Cambodian territories, threaten the Cambodian people, and violate Cambodian heritage.
The CBC indicated that this was the reason why numerous Cambodians living in France and various other countries continue to demand help so that Cambodia receives true peace. More than 100 Cambodians joined the commemoration held in Wat Pothivong Pagoda, near Paris, France, to pay respect to the memory of Cambodian fallen national heroes who dedicated their lives to free the country and the Khmer Nation up to the 1991 Paris Peace Accords.
Mr. Sean Pengse, President of CBC, a civil society organization overseas, and the organizer of the event, told RFA about the commemoration at Wat Pothivong pagoda that: “Because Friday was a working day for Cambodians, we cannot hold the commemoration on the 23rd, and we had to move it to Saturday the 24th and Sunday the 25th of October, at a Cambodian pagoda near Paris. Those who joined us in this commemoration, besides the CBC, include: HRP France, SRP France, the Cambodian Human Rights Defense League, as well as numerous Cambodian associations in France, including representatives from Australia. This is for the Saturday program.”
On Sunday 25 October 2009, citizens of Cambodian origin will gather at 2PM (France time) to hold a peaceful mass demonstration at the Human Rights Plaza (Trocadero) in Paris to demand what Mr. Sean Pengse indicated as: “The goal is for the current [Cambodian] government to fully and clearly respect the Paris Agreements. The Paris Agreements that we all know, are not just the respect of human rights, [political] pluralism, but first and foremost, it is the respect of the national integrity. For the sake of our national integrity, the government issued from the election must cancel all agreements concluded with Vietnam between 1979 and 1991. The current government not only did not cancel them, it even introduced a Supplemental treaty [with Vietnam], in other words, it turned agreements that must be cancelled into legal agreements.”
