Cambodia's Rainsy loses immunity

Sam Rainsy is currently thought to be in France

Cambodia's parliament has stripped opposition leader Sam Rainsy of his immunity from prosecution.

The move was prompted by his reported encouragement to villagers to uproot border markers on the frontier with Vietnam last month.

Mr Rainsy has claimed that Vietnam is encroaching on Cambodian territory.

Parliament is overwhelmingly dominated by the Cambodian People's Party of Prime Minister Hun Sen, who tolerates little dissent.

The vote marks the third time this year that parliament has removed the immunity of members from the biggest opposition party.

Stripping habit

Mr Rainsy was charged with misconduct when he encouraged villagers evicted from a border area to uproot wooden posts that had been placed along the newly agreed frontier with Vietnam.

"The National Assembly has lifted the immunity of Sam Rainsy, who committed an act of destruction... and convinced people to commit criminal acts," the house said in a statement.

Sam Rainsy is currently thought to be in France; the 25 lawmakers from his party boycotted the vote.

Journalists were barred from attending the house session and police prevented the boycotting lawmakers from returning after the vote.

Rights groups and international donors have accused the government in recent months of using the courts to muzzle opponents and the media.

The Sam Rainsy Party spokesman Yim Sovann said the government was abusing its power and acting undemocratically.

"The government wants to silence the opposition when it is helping the people," he told reporters.

"These people are losing land day by day because of the border demarcation. This is an injustice and a big step backwards for democracy in Cambodia."

Last month Cambodia's parliament passed laws limiting protests to fewer than 200 people and tightened defamation laws.

In June, the National Assembly voted to strip parliamentary immunity from two opposition members, Mu Sochua and Ho Vann, so that they can be prosecuted on defamation charges.

The government has defended its use of the courts, saying in one case a critic had attempted to cause "chaos and confusion" with inaccurate remarks.

This is where I don't have any respect for the CPPs. When it comes to Cambodia-Vietname issues, they act like an obedient child, afraid to be critical of the father. Where are the taugh talks like they do against Thailand?

When it is come to national security, one must do it best to stand your line. This is where it is different between CCP and other Parties. Other Parties have geniunity of protection national security.
Concerning on the original bord line is a national security issue. When your neightbor move a property line over onto your, you have to raise concern period.
What Mr Rainsy did, should have been done by every Khmer citizens. Khmer citizens is the ownership of Khmer country. It does not matter if your a CCP OR OTHERS PARTIES.
Friends should not take an advantages of freinds. Since this issue happen to be our friend, we have to deal it urginely, before it is grow out of reach to settle.

The politic in Cambodia has new play... fugitive Thaksin Shinawatra become Cambodia's Govt Advisor and personal Econimic Advisor to Hun Sen.

Is Thailand will pick up Sam Rainsy to be Thai's Gov't Advisor as fugitive Thaksin Shinawatra as Cambodia did?

If Thailand does... a real new ball game play in Southeast Asia.

KI,

Stop behaving like a child because it only humiliates yourself and the opposition. If you really want to help the country, here what you and the opposition, especially Mr. Rainsy should have done.

Mr. Rainsy must remain in the country and ORDER his party members to boycott all parliamentary sessions until the CPP restore his immunity. Instead of writing the letter to the King asking his intervention, Mr. Rainsy must himself become more vocal about the Viet encroachment and incite the mass population to stand up, not against the CPP or PM Hun Sen, but against Hanoi.

You and I know that Hanoi pressures Hun Sen to remove Mr. Rainsy’s immunity. The right thing for Mr. Rainsy and people like you to do is NOT to hit back at PM Hun Sen, but to revolve against Hanoi by publicly inciting riots against yuon interests and community on Cambodia soil. Many CPP people will support you. Also, when you incite people against Hanoi, PM Hun Sen can go back and tell Hanoi that Khmer people will start a new revolution or that CPP will lose its legitimacy in parliament if Hanoi forces CPP to suppress Khmer Nationalists.

Instead of condemning PM Hun Sen, you and the opposition should lend him a helping hand to refuse Hanoi order.

Time is running out, it's no use to debate who's right or wrong but it's time for Sam Raingsy to start consult other international countries especially China regarding Arms Struggle against current regime as I am sure a lot of Cambodians will be behind him or anyone that could come up with a front against CPP; This is the time whenever a population is unhappy with their rulers, it's the time that the ruler will be defeated just like Khmer Rouge vs. the Vietnamese now it's the actual Cambodians against the Vietnamese. Do it. no other way out.

Yuons know fully well that they can not use “HOT” tactics in Cambodia because it will backfire them. It will stir up nationalist revolt across the nation. So all yuons are doing is intimidating and making empty threat to the opposition. Unfortunatley, Mr. Rainsy got scared easily.

He got to stop running away, and stand firm if he wants other people joining him to save the country. He will prevail for sure if he does that!

2:05AM - Mr. Rainsy could become the next PM if he has the gut. Go to China and ask for arm support, and then go to the jungle to start a revolt. Khmers everywhere will take part in the struggle. The question will Mr. Rainsy have enough courage to do that or someone else will take his place to lead the struggle.

Sam Rainsy has chosen good place to stay away from those demons
Where Sam Rainsy should go during the court trial and parliamentarian immunization lifting?

The simplest answer is to stay away from those politically motivated and Vietnamese plans.

* In order to shut up the mouth of Cambodians, to threaten, to quickly proceed its encroaching and test its authority inside CPP, Vietnam has planned to put those 6 sticks in the farm land of Cambodians when realized that Sam Rainsy will lead the Kathin there.

* Under its satellite team work, Vietnam has expected to throw one stone but kill two birds: to test its power inside CPP and threaten Cambodian people in the whole country in expressing their opinion regarding border encroachment of Vietnam.

* Vietnam has well perceived that 99% of mass media (TVs, Radio, Newspapers) in Cambodia are owned by the CPP to effectively manipulate Cambodian people.

* CPP has tried to degrade political popularity of Sam Rainsy by demoralizing as runny away (or hit and run) etc. But major Cambodian people have realized well the biased court, politcally motivated court of Cambodia government, and the human rights violation of Cambodia prison.

In Solidarity

RFA asked Xam RainXy a simple question that "Will he come back to Cambodia to face the Court if Parliament lift his immunity?". He didn't answer the question but at the same he tried to say something which irrelevant to the question, aim to cover up his coward act. What is a funny politician?

Since he pulled off the six poles near Vietnam's border, he always says all along that he doesn't afraid at all if the government sues him, but right now, he can't even step his foot in Cambodia.

As I am often said that Xam RainXy is brave only in front of microphone but in real life, he likes a rat runs around asking other people to help him whenever his political stunt get backfire.

Xam RainXy should go to Thailand and asks his ally (Abhisit and PAD) for helping him.

Look at the cloth which one female opposition MP who walks on the street is Yellow likes PAD in Thailand. So, most SRP MPs and its supporters should wear yellow shirts whenever they are going to strike against the government.

12:52PM, Good point of view but it is obvious. I agree. It is easy to say but as we all know majority of Khmer people in the country are coward. They rather live crawling and kneeling on their knees then die standing.

Also, no CPP will joint Sam Rainsy to oppose Youn because they all sold out to Youn including Hun Xen. Think about it! They only listen to Youn and already striped Sam Rainsy immunity twice already this year.

If you really have doubt that some CPP will joint Sam Rainsy to oppose Youn, I disbelieve! There are 87 MPs were at the Assembly meeting to lift Sam Rainsy immunity. All 87 voted YES.

Another thing and it is obvious. Sam Rainsy help so many defenseless people for the last decade an a half. Now that he need help where are those people? Would you think it should be millions of Khmer people (cobine of those were help by SRP and those who can not tolerate today's rulling government) should oppose in front of the Assembly during the meeting.

This shows that Khmer don't have the guts to stand against Hun Xen. And you think they can stand face to fact with his master Youn. I don't think so. This is why our nation is what it is today.

However, don't even try to blame the Khmer abroad for not helping. They don't have too if they don't want to because they already safe. And most of the Khmer abroad lost almost all interest in helping because those who in the country won't stand and help themself to make it ease for the abroad to help. Well, you know what I mean... it's late and I am sleepy. Excuse my slopy writing.. goodnite!

I am so sorry to see Cambodian Parliament withdraw Sam Rainsy's immunity so easily without any debate as should be done by this institution..... Even in communist Vietnam or China, parliament is more dynamic when asked to make any decision.
