PHNOM PENH — Cambodia has appointed former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra as economic adviser to premier Hun Sen and his administration, a Cambodian government statement said on Wednesday.
The statement, read out on state television, said Thaksin would serve "as personal adviser to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and the adviser to the Cambodian government in charge of economy".
The appointment, by royal decree, came almost two weeks after Hun Sen riled Thailand by offering safe haven to Thaksin, who was ousted in a coup in 2006 and is living abroad to avoid corruption charges.

What are the benifits to have Thai as an advisor? Does it mean that Cambodian are poor at economics?

This job offered by HUN SEN is nothing but a serious blow to THAKSIN.If he accept the job ,he'll be viewed by the THAI public opinion as traitor, and not only that ,it may unite RED and yellow shirt together.Just remember, Thai never consider khmer as their friend and wise versa.It doesn't matter RED or yellow.When it come down to person and country ,they will side with the country .Plus, why stir thing up.HUN SEN should do business with whoever in the govt not the exiled one.

2:40AM - what you said above made sense, and that's what the average Thai thinks. But that's not what Hun Sen and Thaksin have in mind.
First, Hun Sen knows fully well that the future of Thailand is likely in the hand of Thaksin after Bhumibol dies. So, it is our interest to nuture friendship with Thaksin. Beside, we get nothing to lose.
As for Thaksin, the appointment will give him the opportunity to "visit" Cambodia to carry out his "duties".
I think KI is a big mouth to call Thaksin a criminal. We must balance our wordings. Thaksin has been labled fugitive, criminal or whatever from the un-democratic and un-elected government of Thailand led by the Abhisit. This is all political... so becareful my friend.

Do you honestly believe Thailand will be in THAKSIN's hand after their king is dead ? .I firmly believe just the other way ,i think Thailand will be in the hand of the powerful Thai's ARMY.
We have a lots to lose by sheltering THAKSIN .Thai may stop doing business with us and can cause a lots more trouble for us at the border .Thai may think of us as untrustworthy partner in term treaty(EXTRADITION TREATY) .Plus if THAKSIN use our country to do his duty to destabilize his country ,don't you think Thailand may use it as an excuse to hurt us ?.

Please do not blame Mr. Thaksin as a criminal because of this Abhisit nondemocratic and unjust Government to blame Him on a small matter to becomes big.
Mr. Thaksin is a victim of the 2006 Coup when he led a delegation to the UN General Assembly.
He is supported by a majority of Thais as a good leader than the actual Abhishit Government. His Puea Thai Party led by Mr. Chaovalit Yongchaiyudh will win.
We hail Mr. Thaksin political comeback and welcome Him to Cambodia. The Thais cannot do anything against Cambodia.
For the good relations between our two peoples and countries, we must do our best to support Mr. Thaksin at any cost. Cambodia is an independent and sovereign State.

Listen mr Ly 1156am. Mr thaksin might have been a victim of the coup, but he's a runaway fugitive. you have no facts to prove that mr thaksin is innocent nor he's a victim of the coup.
Do you think the current cambodian govt is a legit one? Cambodia also had a coup in 1997; would you say that the 1997 coup was politically motivated?
The political game in thailand is the opposite of cambodia. Thai king manages thai political affairs, whereas in cambodia, khmer king does not get involved with politics. Khmer king only exists as a symbolic head of state.
You see,someone once said: those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. History tells us that former khmer king made a huge mistakes by allowing vietcongs to stay in cambodia. If mr thaksin is allowed to reside in cambodia the conflict betweeen thailand and cambodia will lead to a large scale war.
Thaksin and Ranarith are in the same situation.
Hun Sen refuses to talk to his daughter, allows his wife to victimize his alleged mistresses (acid attacks), still does not have electricity for all of Cambodia, and gives Cambodian land to Vietnam.
