[Thai] PM advised to review MOU plan

Bangkok Post

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva should think carefully about the plan to revoke a memorandum of understanding on overlapping maritime boundaries in the Gulf of Thailand signed with Cambodia in 2001, ex-premier Somchai Wongsawat said on Saturday.

"The MOU revocation would damage the country and causes difficulties to Thai people”, Mr Somchai, a brother-in-law of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra said.

Asked about Thaksin’s appointment as an economic advisor to the Cambodian government and personal advisor to Hun Sen, Mr Somchai said the appointment has not caused any damage to Thailand.

“It is an honour for Thaksin as he is accept by a foreign country. The government should not let personal feelings decide its foreign relation policy”, said Mr Somchai.

Foreign Affairs Minister Kasit Piromya had said on early this week said he would propose the MOU revocation plan to the cabinet meeting on upcoming Tuesday for approval.

I favor Thailand to revoke MoU. If they did then no body can invest in oil exploration in that area. Either side can touch it. I don't trust Hun Sen government keep benefit from oil for Cambodian.

Thailand is running out of oil resources with many years of extraction…. Hence it is Thailand that is in bad need of exploiting the resources! By scraping the MOU, neither Thailand nor Cambodia could exploit the resource. The overlapping claims area is the last resort of hope for Thailand.. So, who hurt the most? Thailand, with inexperienced Prime Minister, is very good at shooting itself in the foot.

Cambodia still has on and offshore oil resources which have not yet been extracted…. Hence, Cambodia could wait another 50-100 years!!!

So go ahead Thailand to scrap the MOU… then what… Thailand will give it up forever?

Without oil now, Cambodia seems to trek along okay only 10 years after 30 years of wars, destructions, and havoc. Eventhough Cambodia is considered as developing country, Cambodia now a day does not lack the absolute and tenacity in protecting of what it has. Make no mistake about it Thailand, Cambodia has plenty of that. Also Thailand, don't you be in a dissolution in thinking that you are a developed country. You are still far from it.

The repercussion of scrapping the 2001 MOU on Thailand will be much more devastated than on Cambodia. In today environment, Thailand needs Cambodia and surrounding countries. Not much the other way around. Remember that!!!
