Thailand’s deputy prime minister on Friday warned the country could close its borders to Cambodia, after each withdrew their ambassadors in a worsening row over ousted Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra.
Both sides have troops amassed on the border following skirmishes over Preah Vihear temple last year, but military officials said Friday the situation remained calm.
The two countries share seven international checkpoints, as well as 12 others, along 800 kilometers of border.
Thai Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban was quoted Friday saying worsening relations could lead to closed checkpoints, following Cambodia’s announcement it had made Thaksin an economic adviser to Prime Minister Hun Sen.
Thaksin is in self-imposed exile and faces a two-year jail sentence for corruption charges if he returns to Thailand. Hun Sen has said he would welcome the former premier, who was ousted in a bloodless coup in 2006, in spite of an extradition treaty with Thailand.
“If Cambodia still adopts a hard line and uncompromising attitude, then we must continue to downgrade relations and maybe seal off all border checkpoints,” Suthep was quoted by Agence France-Presse as saying.
Government spokesman Khieu Kanharith said he wasn’t surprised by the warning, but he added that Thailand would suffer more from a border closure than Cambodia.
The deepening diplomatic crisis had no bearing on a military standoff along the northern border, officials said Friday.
Defense Minister Tea Banh told VOA Khmer the border situation was “quiet” and “normal,” despite the withdrawal of ambassadors from Bangkok and Phnom Penh.
Chea Mon, commander of Division 4, said Cambodian soldiers were maintaining their positions on the border, which was quiet.

Thailand was doing the something to Laos in the 80s, and Burma before that. But Laos wasn’t nice like Cambodian, so they opened fire on Thailand troops in December of 1987, over 1,000 died. Boarder dispute between Khmer and Thai is the matter between Cambodia as a country.
But the current dispute between Hun Sen administration and Thai is personal.
Hun Sen must stop abusing his power this way, millions of dollar poured into building up relation with this greedy neighbor evaporated over night just because Hun Sen using Cambodia as a country for his personal gain.

I think we must admid that if their (Thai)fighters jets in the air, and keep above 10000 feet above sea level (6000 ground level), Hun Sen and his compound will no doubt be really disappointed. The effectiveness of the AAAs are reduced when targeting their targets. Also, the Thai has all the GPS grid for the so-called Tuol Krasaig compound, and, of course, other things in between.
Since the vast majority of Khmer people are already suffered from the regime, so might as well let the Thai do the job for us.

This is a pretty simple issue of international diplomatic protocol. The arch crook hun sen has appointed a CONVICTED CRIMINAL as economic advisor, based on a personal friendship. There is NO BENEFIT to cambodia, or cambodian people in this - it is simply a case of hun sen meddling in politics and helping his friends.
His action is totally unacceptiple in diplomacy, and the Thais are quite right to rataliate, in a meaningful and substantial manner. Closing the borders might teach hun sen that he can't just do as he personally wishes, and he must respect his neighbors, and put the interests of this country first, not his golf buddies.

Sdach Korn Hun Xen is got caught in the middle of Thai internal politics now. Thaksin cannot win and become King Taksin, so Khmer people is embarass because Hun Sen support Thaksin. About 480,000 Khmer workers in Thailand and their families at home are now got cold feet. Around a million Khmer people along the borders are fear of losing their jobs and bussinesses. If war break out, people will be forced to be soldiers and/or give financial support for soldiers. Hun Sen doesn't care about the suffering of Khmer people; he only listens to his boss VN. Yuon benifits from this tension:1. Sells weapon to Cambodia; 2. Khmers have no choice but to buy Yuon's products and go to VN to use their services; 3. Cambodia can't explore oil, so that VN and Thai can continue to get more oil from the sea. Hun Sen's games are only serving the Yuon's interests. Bravo Hun Sen!!! If closing Thai-Khmer borders cause the Thai to suffer more than the Khmers counterpart why Hun Sen bowed to Thai pressure by paying the $50 Million dollars to cover the damage to Thai Embassy and their businesses caused by Khmer riots in 2003 just so the Thai can open the border? Wake up dude.
