A prominent US human rights group on Friday urged the US to take tough action on Cambodia for its harsh moves against government critics.
“Human Rights Watch urges [US President] Obama to openly challenge Prime Minister Hun Sen’s increasing authoritarian practices, in which he and other ruling party officials use violence, threats, and the country’s notoriously corrupt judiciary to silence and imprison opposition party members, journalists, land rights activists, and other government critics,” Human Rights Watch said in a statement.
The statement was made just two days before President Barack Obama is due to meet Asean leaders on Sunday, after attending the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Singapore.
“This statement is unrealistic and untrue. It has a political intention to attack the government,” said Phay Siphan, secretary of state and spokesman for the Council of Ministers.
Phay Siphan said that what was raised in the statement is ruthless and not honest with a “bad intention to unfairly slander the government of Cambodia”.
But opposition party welcomes the statement.
“I thank Human Rights Watch for helping to remind the US President Barack Obama who is the leader of a superpower to pay attention to the rights and freedom of Cambodian people and democracy in Cambodia,” said Kem Sokha, president of the Human Rights Party, calling the government to accept criticism.
Opposition leader Sam Rainsy will be the third member of parliament to lose his immunity this year following an allegedly pulling out border markers with Vietnam. Two other opposition parliamentarians Mu Sokhua and Ho Vann have been stripped off their immunity for criticizing premier Hun Sen and military officers.
The editor of an opposition Khmer Mchas Srok newspaper was sentenced to one year jail term for writing on corruption issues.

Ah Chhkae Kanh Chra Yuon Dach Th'lai.
somewhat, you can insult hun sen, cpp, you can sometime criticize hun and other khmer while it give an appearance of a façade of democracy wanted by world community but while you touch hun sen boss interest, you got burn
It is ever yuon rules, no matter you are polpot, hun sen or rainsy, if you touch yuon interest, you got burn. This is why hun sen and his clan cpp never dare to oppose to their vn boss interest fearing to get burn like polpot. Don’t expect that hun will do anything that oppose to his boss interest or wills. After all, cpp is yuon puppet government, topped by yuon to serve yuon interest.
Those who support to this regime in someway it is, have khmer blood on hands as these assassins.
if it's for cambodian national interest, then should do so. otherwise, cambodia isn't that bad, really, in terms of human rights, etc...

If you want to enter Cambodia to join any political party to help Cambodia to improve human right, Freedom of expression and democracy system, you must make sure that you have created yourself a financial independent for you and your family first such as having a passive income through your investments which can generate you an income to provide you for a good sense of security. This security is to guarantee you a high level of integrity and dignity which will allow you to stand strong for what you are believing. If you haven't prepared yourself for this important part of your life, you will end up serving as slave of CPP party. You have to follow their instruction for survival.

Go Go Hun Sen!!!
9:50 AM,
You meant go to hell Hun Sen!!! Is that right?
Claiming that this statement is unrealistic and untrue, on what ground are you saying that.
It seem to believe that CPP is a god sent and never do anything wrong.
Regarding human rights, of course physical abuse is getting less but emotional, psychological oppression remain pervasive. Intellectual practice continues to be restricted.
Local people knows about the abuse, international communities, NGOs and UN convoys are aware of that except extreme CPP officials are still in denial, why???.
Is it too ugly to admit to the reality and rectify it, to truely serve cambodians.
If you have ever lived in developed country, you would surely understand these complaints.
Come on please wake up to the reality before it is too late.
Committed to signing the Peace Accords 1991, international communities are able to enforce that agreement.
You will never be able to eliminate nationalism spirit although they are jailed.
In KR,our country men were killed indiscriminately and they KR failed to control. It is a vicious cycle if abuses still being committed .
And be ware of old saying,Fish will eat the ant when there is a flood, but the ant will eat the fish when low tide.
What goes around, will come around.
