Translated from Khmer by Socheata
Mrs. Sieng Vanthy, a former singer from the Sangkum Reastr Niyum era (Sihanouk’s regime) and mother of musician Reth Thidona and singer Tata, passed away in the afternoon of 09 December 2009, at the Soviet hospital. She was 61-year-old. According to Reth Thidona, his mother was a famous singer during the Sangkum Reastr Niyum era, and she was a star of the SKD music group [KI-Media note: SKD is the French acronym for Société Khmère de Distillerie, the state-owned alcohol and brewery company set up by then-Prince Norodom Sihanouk. The company maintains its own band in which Mrs. Sieng Vanthy was one of the lead singers]. She died of illness which took a hold of her since 2003. Three days before succumbing, she was sent to a Vietnamese hospital where she received a scan that revealed that she had a brain inflammation, as well as blockage of brain artery. Mrs. Sieng Vanthy was the daughter of former screen comedian So Chin. Her mother, Em Samrith, was a Lakhon Bassac actress. She has five siblings (including one brother), and she is the Benjamin of the family. Her two older sisters were also famous stars: Mrs. So Sovinra and Mrs. Sieng Dy (currently Princess Sieng Dy, following her marriage to a member of the Sisowath family).

May her soul rest in peace.
love you forever.
I always wonder who famously sings this song? It was cute and a true hit in 1974? Thanks for posting KI
Dara Chaum Chan?
It seems that the young generation in the 21 century struggle to learn and interested of their ancestors singers. Do you guy recognize Dara Chaum Chan? She was a movie star in the late 60s, earliest 1970s she enrolled into music. Dara Chaum Chan’s voice is quite a bit like a former singer Huy Meas. Most of the people get confuse with her voices and don’t seem to recognize her. Please listen carefully of Dara Chaum Chan and Huy Meas songs. Dara Chaum Chan sang so many of songs at that era. Both Huy Meas and Dara Chaum Chan voice are alike.

i have this album. i alway wonder who sing this song. please rip.
i also wonder why the old khmer singers dont open up school and help teach this new generation whose really want to sing. for example prep savat,sreymom..... they are suck. i wouldnt listen to them even if they pay me to listen.
Most of Khmers seem appreciate wrong singers voice.
To 10:46 PM,
Most Khmer singers during the 1960s and 70s were famous and talent in singing, not necessary to get in school to be taught. It’s depending on how you grow up and your goal wish to be singer. Of course, I don’t dare particular care to listen to present Khmer songs and singers, because the Composer and the Music Writer didn’t seem to have any achievement of music. Ros Sereysothea, Sinn Sisamouth, Hoy Meas and Pen Ron are the BEST hit in late 1960s and until the Fall of Phnom Penh.

classical khmer songs forever. i love all, especially the beautiful clear, fluent khmer voices of the sangkum reastre niyum. well, i guess, life goes on as life come and go. rip. i truly believe there are more talented khmer golden voice singers of the new generation out there waiting to be discovered. of course, in the 1960s these famous khmer talented singers and and song writers were accidentally discovered. take ms. ros sereysothea for example, she was discovered in battambang by accident, then introduced to phnom penh socialite, etc. so, i think all we can do is encourage more and more khmer people not to be shy and reveal their true talents or skills, etc... may they all rest in peace (rip). god bless cambodia and all our beautiful khmer people and citizens.
i think everyone's songs of those time were unique and good in their own way. even ms. choun malai had some great hits as well as ms. so savoeun, although not as famous as ms. ros sereysothea, ms. pen ron, ms. huy meas, mr. sin sisamouth, etc... singing and acting take talent and skill combine, really. also nice to have a beautiful voice as well. i also think being brave and courageous is another added personal quality as well because if you are too shy and too narrow-minded, you can't show you true color that shines who you are, really! so, i stronly encourage everyone in the art business to be brave, courageous and do not be afraid to act, sing, be sexy, be yourself, etc... take ms. ron pen, for example, although her singing voice is not as beautiful as ms. ros sereysothea, one thing we all can agree was that she can rock. she was like ms. tina turner of cambodia in those day, really! god bless.
May God bring her soul back home and bless her family too.
I was sad when I heard Thy passed away. We never see each orther for long time. Wish her soul rest in peach. Your friend Thy.
