07 January 1979 marked only a change from one communist regime to another: Thach Setha

Officials Argue Two Sides of Divisive Day

A senior Cambodian People’s Party official defended the government’s celebrating of the contentious Jan. 7 holiday on Thursday, claiming it was a day of victory and arguing against criticism that the day merely marks the beginning of an occupation.

Vietnamese forces ousted the Khmer Rouge from Phnom Penh on Jan. 7, 1979, beginning a decade-long occupation that saw years of civil war between government forces and the guerrillas.

CPP lawmaker Cheam Yiep said the day was one the ruling party was thankful for, because it augured peace and led to victories in future general elections for the party.

The day marked one of survival for Cambodia, he said by phone Thursday,as a guest on “Hello VOA.”

However, a second guest on the show, Thach Setha, a senior member of the Sam Rainsy Party, who joined in the Phnom Penh studio, said the day marked only a change from one communist regime to another.

Were the Vietnamese intentions benevolent, the country would have done more before 1979, he said. The Vietnamese retained an embassy until 1977, he said, when Phnom Penh was “a ghost city,” and waited until the Cambodians were nearly “extinguished,” before bringing in troops two years later.

“So Cambodia suffered by others’ politics,” he said. “They killed us to become ghosts, and then they rose up, wanting us to thank them. So Cambodia, please, understand this history.

There's 3.5 millions illegally vietnamese living in cambodia from 1979-current day, it's funny that Thais and Vietnam alway catching khmer people who living illegally in their country and punish them in jail or send back to cambodia, but for Vietnamese people in cambodia, our government done or say nothing about it? this is the crime for living illegally in some other country...?

Yep, like mexican people living illegally in US, most of them got deported and send back...if vietnam punish our people in jail, we should do the same to them? i think in Phnom Penh city, all khmer poor people got kick out to the countryside, while rich vietnamese move inside the city...

7 Jan 1979 is the victory day for the whole Cambodian nation. You can not twist and turn the reality and history. The majority of Cambodian including SRP members are benefit from 7 Jan. Stop to blame 7 Jan just for your political benefit.

7 January 1979 was a dangerous date when the Trio Stooges, H S; H Samrin; and C Sim allowed Viets to invade and colonize Khmer kandal today. Without UN, Western community, and especially US's squeeze on VN's economy, Hanoi would have yoked this central Khmers like Laos today. How can one justify 7 January since then VN occupied Khmer for 10 years is a liberation day? It is ridiculous to hear the Trio of VN's stooges assert it is a second birth of Khmers. Due to the 7 Jan, Khmers today face poverty, disgrace, and loss of border water and land, natural resources such oil in Boeung Tonles Sap and hundred thousands of farms given to VN. KhOpen,

7 January, 1979 was a big victory for Ho Chi Ming's dreams. Colonizes Lao, now Cambodia, and then Thailand.

Khmers once used to be the sons of Empire and what happens to khmers now? We are so fucked up and be a big losers. Do we feel ashame? Yes I do and how about you out there?

12:51pm,
that was a bygone theory that monsieur Ho chi ming had a plan to annex vietnam to cambodia and lao, but the viet fails everytime. In the late 1980s the viets got defeated and had to withdraw its troops from Cambodia. This serves as a reminder that if Thais or viets want to invade Cambodia they will be defeated in no time.

Hanoi did train Khmer Rouge to kill Khmer people.

And then Hanoi invaded Cambodia, and proclaimed as Savior of Cambodian race. And Hanoi wanted Khmer to thank them, but why Hanoi still kept over 100,000 Hanoi troops occupying Cambodia, with over 5 millions Hanoi militia disguised as Viet illegal immigrants, plus had the rights to cast ballot for CPPP.

Shame! Shame ! Shame ! Hun Khvang Ma Khak.

Most Khmers and all royal families support Viet. Regime to rule Cambodia.

So khmer land will be Viet land.

i think both sides of views make sense, thus, no one should accuse other of wrong because they have to understand both view points as this is a controversial, but true reality as well. maybe both sides should move on with life, and instead of keep using viet/youn too much, why not call it the end of the brutal, stupid KR regime because everyone should know that when we mention too much viet/youn gratitude, it is not popular with majority of khmer people, really! viet/youn should abuse the system in cambodia. mayb e if youn did help to liberate cambodia from the stupid KR, someone else could have done the same thing, really. i think both arguments makes sense, however, the problem is with over zealously mention and thanking viet/youn too much which could ruin the otherwise unpopular foreign invasion of cambodia. this must be kept humble and to a minimal, really!

only idiot would say 07 janury marked only a chang from one communist regime to another.

Ah Khmer wannabe! Get the fuck out of this site! Judging from your comment, you were born in the 80's. Anything beyond that, you have no clue.
Perhaps, you've been living in Cambodia for so long that you think you one of us?
