PHNOM PENH — Cambodia's ruling party Thursday warned the country's UN-backed court not to disrupt national progress in its pursuit of Khmer Rouge leaders, as it marked the 31st anniversary of the regime's ouster.
The court is preparing to give a verdict in its first trial, of former torture centre chief Duch, while four other senior leaders of the hardline communist regime are awaiting trial on war crimes and other charges.
But Cambodian and international prosecutors have openly clashed over whether the court should pursue more suspects, while the Cambodian investigating judge has refused to summon high-ranking government officials as witnesses.
"We oppose any attempts to use the chamber for ill-intentions that would have an impact on peace, national reconciliation and development, which are our hard-won achievements" said Chea Sim, president of the Cambodian People's Party (CPP).
Addressing thousands of supporters during a rally to mark the anniversary of the toppling of the brutal Khmer Rouge regime by Vietnamese-backed forces in 1979, Chea Sim pledged the party's continued backing.
"CPP offers its support to the current process of (the tribunal) in trying crimes committed by senior leaders of the Democratic Kampuchea (Khmer Rouge) regime," he said.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, who is also the deputy leader of the CPP, has repeatedly warned that pursuing more suspects from the hardline communist regime could spark civil war.
The process has often been hit by allegations that Hun Sen's administration has attempted to interfere in the tribunal to protect former regime members who are now in government.
After several years of haggling between Cambodia and the UN, the tribunal was created in 2006 to try former Khmer Rouge leaders.
Up to two million people were executed or died of starvation or overwork as the 1975-1979 Khmer Rouge regime tried to create an agrarian utopia. After being toppled they continued to fight a civil war until 1998.

This is a fucking joke and who is calling the shot? Internatinal court or Hun Sen's court? Million and million of dollars have been spent to execute the KR crime so far, and what is the result? Just a fucking joke!
well i'm sure every Cambodian around the world would like to see more justice being done for the Cambodian Khmer Rouge and the Vietnamese Rouge victims being trail and prosecuted.
Without Hun Sen, Chea Sim, Heng Samrin, Hor Numhong.. the trail in my opinion is incomplete. There are 2 parties to the KR: one is pro-China and one is Pro_vietnam. As we aleady have the pro-china arrested. We need to get the pro-Vietnam to come to the table...
These will bring complete justice to the Khmer people and we hope the tribunal can shed some real light into the true storey being the killing of the Khmer people...So please if the tribunal listen to the CPP, then what is the point of have a 50% trail.
It set bad precedent for the rest of the world.
There is no civil war, no Khmer war civil war when the real criminal master mind is being trail. The only war are from the people who say it and have the money to create one themself. If this rhetoric continue i think Hun Sen and the CPP government are the "terrorist" behind the peace in Cambodia, and should also be prosecuted as such.

Under the Cambodian People's Party Hun Sen Khmer Rouge Regime, no criminals that has been committed crimes against journalists, political opponents, leaders of the Free Trade Union, innocent men, women and children have ever been brought to justice.
cpp government celebrate January 07 1979 every year and called"second birth of every khmer poeple" it sound vary interesting. "hero" Hun sen, chea sim, heng samrin, hor namhong, you must not afraid to go on trail tell cambodia people what you have saved their lives during what time, and don't forget to tell them where were you? what did you do during 1975 and 1976, If i was you i would be vary proud to show the world what i have done not thing wrong.who know? our king might give each of you another star, or maybe cpp government afriad to tell the true, but ok all khmer people all ready know your true collar. we know what you did in[ eastern zone ] during khmer rouge.
Pathetic! International should not afraid Hun Xen. The more Hun Xen threat the more obvious of guilts. And the international should have higher interest! Not step back!
Useless! Waiste of funds.....
eboy ,sdech chuor ,7 jan day of youn plan and start killing khmer one by one
I doubt that UN will against Hun Sen and CPP's regime some day. Be prepare Hun Sen and CPP, you are sick aginst the world. Your day will come soon.
ah Chea Sim wanted Hun Sen to do him from the rare end, and hun sen asked right now!
Through this, I hope that all Cambodians who dearly love our country and the people of Cambodia will come together and united in order to by all means topple him or vote him out of power if we are to protect our nation from danger towards real peace, independence, development, democracy, and justice. WE MUST NOT LET HIM LEAD OUR COUNTRY ANY LONGER!
Notice: To vote him out of the power must be not easy because he controls everything. Moreover, he has also illegal Viets to help vote for him including many other tactics like vote buying, threat, and even killing.
The both Hanoi dogs!!!!
Because we, Cambodians are not Jews! nor White! it's simple is that! this tribunal is for the sake of it and that is all folks! I tell you, should the Free Khmers is in charge of the government, things will be different!
Another things if Cambodia is a Catholic country, I am sure the West and the Vatican will interfere to make sure that the head of the government will be replaced by the Free Khmers instead of being stuck as it is right now! like it or not that is way how the world politics work!
Let's dream that what if one of those missionaries go back to tell the vatican that Cambodians are ready to convert by the millions but they are unable to practice their new religion (being catholic), I am sure papal will interfere to make sure that change are coming! but that is an impossible dream and we are too honest! we don't know how to play the games by the rules?
Hun Xen and his cpp clowns bark as usual but they are cowards. they can't afford to fight with khmer nationalists. If they want to fight the UN, they'd be better off preparing coffins for themselves.
Three Stooges are Curly Peter Paul.
guess what? in the picture, they are discussing about money. it's nothing to do with politic, someone sit next to hun xen, just rumor though, heard they talking about when the next payday from UN's fund and how much will deposit to hun xen's account. hun xen better spend all his fortune before it burn out in the air. one suggestion, fix your 1 blind eye, it's so ugly as a khmer prime minister. look at thai PM he looks hansome, very charismastism toward thai pple and high educated. hun xen there's no place for your retire resident in usa, canada, new zeland or in europe. all khmer will bring u to the justice like hitler or pinochet or any other dictator in africa. even in cambodia, once your power is no longer support from viet, khmer pple will reposess all your properties and kill all your bad relatives who commited murder and crime against humanity.
