The delusions of the January 7 debate

A propoganda poster from the Khmer Rouge era calling for solidarity between the citizens of Cambodia and Vietnam.

Dear Editor,

Your article “PM blasts January 7 detractors” (January 5) didn’t demonstrate anything new for Cambodian politics. Leaders have always pronounced strong political rhetoric to create a clear dichotomy of pro- and anti-groups when this day has arrived. In reality, the government has consolidated full power to exercise over everything, including whether to celebrate this day or not celebrate. The current political environment in Cambodia has not given any clue of the possible threat to the stability of government at all. But why every year, when January 7 arrives, is there a flowering of incidents and controversial public speech in Cambodia?

The answers might be diverse. But I am impressed by the Khmer proverb which states: Veay tiek bong-erl trey, or, “to stir the water to see the fish clearly”. It has been 31 years since Vietnamese troops encroached on Cambodia’s borderlands, accompanied by Khmer Rouge defectors, to topple the Khmer Rouge regime of Pol Pot. The argument since has been endless. Vietnamese troops are presented in Cambodia as either liberators, or invaders, or both. In the past decades, the two debaters carried guns and ammunitions to fight against each other, at least between the Khmer nationalists based along the border and the Khmer troops based in Phnom Penh, and backed by a hundred thousand Vietnamese troops. But after the Paris Peace Accords of 1991 and the subsequent power consolidation of the Cambodian People’s Party, the debate remains only on lips and tongues.

Hence both guns fighting and lips quarreling have significantly divided Khmer society. It has shown division over unity, disadvantage rather than advantage, and myopia rather than long-sightedness. The more we hate the past atrocities of the Khmer Rouge, the more shameful we are as the same Khmer. The more we praise foreign intervention, the more we lose national identity to those foreigners. Thus, what inputs should we welcome and what outcome should we expect? Can Cambodian people come to a joint beneficial solution to this disgraceful quarrel?

Of course, from these 31 years, Cambodian people both old and young have focused on their living standards, schooling and future cultivation. The past has become a good lesson for them. The Khmer Rouge regime will never come back again for sure. The trial of the Khmer Rouge is going on to respectively bring national reconciliation and the healing of trauma. All Cambodian parties and individuals have to join this trial and be courageous to show up at the courtroom as the primary witnesses if you really need the genuine outcome of justice. Cambodian people have to look forward to determine the broader interests of the nation. They should not entrap themselves in a “quid pro quo” of this delusional date, January 7. Take Germany as an example: They have never taken as a big deal or celebrated the day the Allied Forces, led by the United States, liberated them from Hitler’s brutal Nazi regime. That tragic past and the liberation of the Allies has been buried deeply in Germany.

This is the most rational point of view that I have never heard before.

Cambodia should learn from this message and take Germany as example.

I think the term "dictator" should be used instead of "leader". Hun Sen and all his criminal comrades don't fit it.

People are becoming more and more delusional with the inepitude and incompetence of governance to provide protection for citizens and on a bigger picture protect and preserve national interest e.g national heritage, resources, and human resource development in education.

The inability of government to provide justice to people is also affecting the image of the monarchy.

As the monarchy becomes more obvious in its support for the CPP the people become delusional about this institution as well.

Where as before Khmer revered the institution of monarchy as a symbol of Cambodian culture and pride of Khmer identity, now the monarchy come to symbolize a puppet of CPP, and an endorser of the current Khmer misery.

People who once would thought hard about betraying the image of monarchy and royalty now believes that monarchy has no role and use in Khmer society but to help perpetuate the abuse and legitimize everything that they feel is against them in Cambodia.

Monarchy is no longer safe. in 1975 the monarchy was overthrown once already, but this time, in the revolution that is simmering in the hearts and mind of the younger generation of Khmer people, the Monarchy cannot be saved.

The kings are more interested in preserving family lineage then about representing symbol of Khmer nationhood.

Let this be warning to Somdach Sihanouk and Somdach Sihamoni, that if they stand on the side of Khmer oppression, don't expect that Khmer will have any interest of prolonging this useless form of monkey parade.

We are the new generation of Khmer, do not want to abolish and leave our culture behind, but the culture of monarchy have a choice. You can stand with us for justice or you can stand with those who oppress us in awarding them and praising them in their ugly developments that rob us of our lives, livelihood, and future.

Sign,
new Khmer generation

Well! what happen in Germany can't be compared to what happen in Cambodia!

First German don't genocide their own race and they conquer the whole European continent in the name of German empire and racial superior over other race.

Second German is rich and industrialize country and have billion and billion of dollars to unify the East and West Germany into one country under one true German government (not puppet) for the German people!

Third German don't have a puppet government like Cambodia to deal with!

Fourth German didn't have the same leader for over 30 years because Germany is a progressive country which has new leaders, new mindset, and new vision of the world!

It is so sad to learn that Cambodia is still stuck in the past and still dealing with something that happened some 30 years ago and in large part thank to stupid Cambodian leaders such as AH HUN SEN for reminding Cambodian people by celebrating January 7 of the Vietcong invasion of Cambodian which force him with a gun to his head to sign illegal treaties to violate Cambodian sovereignty.

As long as Cambodia doesn't have a true government for Cambodian people and by Cambodian people and there will be more conflict to come because Cambodian people will not accept a puppet government installed by a Vietcong government!

The idea of venerating such day comes from communist only, especially yuon. yes, true no other countries celebrated such celebtations in history. Japan doesn't celebrate American liberation of their country from militarism either, although back then they applauded Marcarthur as a supreme hero guiding them to prosperity and democracy.

Does the French have one too ? No ? Plenty of such incidents in history, if one cares to look back.

A solgan said NO 01/07/1979 means NO TODAY.

I would add more NO 03/18/1970 MEANS NO 4/17/1975 AND NO 01/07/1979.

CPP should thankful to Lon Nol to make CPP existed

The author miss the point... in 1945 Germany: USA, France and England really liberated their areas(Germany was divided in 4 zones) They left behind a really democratic Federal Republic... BUT the Soviets/Russian (and this is the real similarity)were there to stay... until 1991 when the Communist System fell down....

Three facts that January 7 is not a liberation day:
Vietnam lose Cambodia after Geneva Peace Accord 1954, in 1973, Pol Pot expeled all Vietnamese troops from Cambodia territory, and in 1979 Vietnam lose patience with Pol Pot regime which has posed a great threat to Vietnam national security. As Pol Pot continued to purge his cadres, Vietnam found a good opportunity to defeat a weak regime. There is no way that Hanoi came to Cambodia as liberators or to perform their job as humanitarian intervention, but as opportunists, aggressors, invaders, conguorers, and swallowers of the Khmer Mother Land.

If Vietcong is behind the strings, then it's time to kill the puppeteers. But how, is the question?

Make no sense to keep pounding on Hun Sen, does it? Just like playing a game of popping mole, just not sure which hole it will pop up next.

I'm afraid this is the reality of what been going on in the last 3 decades. Not saying Mr. Hun Sen is without faults.

The UN is so concerning about the justice of the KR, when our greatest problem is the neighbor to the east. What good is justice when we loss our right to our own land? Kick out the UN, send them to fight with the polar bears.

The real problem is Hun Sen keeps pounding the same issue on the whole Khmer nation, you get ?

Nazi Germany may not have done any mass killing of its own people, but they did kill off any Germans who had the slightest disabilities. In addition, they also killed homosexuals, half blooded Germans and basically anyone who oppose the Nazi regime. It's never a good idea to give all the power to one man.

What happen on January 7, 1979? Is it liberation or occupation? It probably could have been liberation if the Vietnamese weren't communist as well. All they did was replace khmer communist with Vietnamese communist as government.

In response to 4:21:

1. Nazis murdered their own nationality: communists, jews, homosexuals, trade unionists, catholics as examples. The Nazis later killed other nationalities as it expanded across Europe.

2. Certainly, the West assisted the recoverer of post-war Germany in much the same way as the donors have helped Cambodia to recover.

3. In some ways Germany could have been described as a puppet government in the post-war period upto 1989. East and West Germany respresented the realities of the cold war in Europe and both sides bolstered Germany's economy etc. in order for it to be a symbol of their anti-communist or anti-capitalist ideology. Certainly, East Germany could be described as a puppet government in power purely because the Soviet Union allowed it.

4. Also, Hitler was elected to power and then remained in power for over 10 years until 1945. The elections could easily be called fraudulent based upon the level of intimidation of opposition groups and political violence. Also, the traditional elites of Germany had hoped to be able to control the 'upstart' Hitler for their own political purposes. This underestimation of Hitler's abilities ultimately plunged Europe into civil war.

5. Hitler provided political stability for Germany at a time when Western inspired democracy had led to instability and frequent changes of government.

6. Germany is always going to be controversial point of comparison with other aspects of history. In using Germany as such a point of comparison, it must be remembered that Germany fits into different historical periods. Therefore, it is very illogical to pick and choose different aspects of German history over almost a hundred years as comparisons to 30 years of Cambodian history. Similarities can be drawn but to make any comparison meaningful we should choose a particular period of German history: Weimar Republic, Nazi Germany, post-war Germany, or Reunified Germany.

How can we call something a "palaiz Puoch Sahs" when it is self inflicting? If Hun Xen, Heng Samrin and Chea Sim insist on saying Jan. 7th saved Khmer from "rbob palaiz puoch sahs" then then must clarify for us "palai puoch sahs nor bongkod? to chiat klun eng aich palaiz puoch sahs klun ban te?" the wording is a contradiction.

Palaiz puoch sahs implied there is a foreign entity involved in exterminating of the Khmer race. Hun Xen and Chea Xim must clarify for us who this foreign country is if they keep insist they saved us from this genocide!
