THE KHMER ROUGE LEGACY: How Then Shall We Live?

Thank you to Mr. At Keo of North Carolina for his Open Letter to me which I am happy to give an Open Response shortly. In the meantime, may you ponder over "How Then Shall We Live", first published in August 2008 in The Phnom Penh Post as part of the Voice of Justice columns, and enjoy a few sourvenirs from Nataya Resort in Kampot province, an oasis sandwiched between 1 km of seashore and the eerily beautiful Bokor Mountains, of this past New Year weekend. (see photos below) I am very fortunate to be given opportunities to "live well" - in beauty, in truth, in grace, in goodness, in love - and it is my strongest desire to see (and my life's work to affect attidudinal and environmental changes in order) my fellow Cambodians be afforded these same opportunities to live well. The answer to living well, as Dr. Mark Strom reminds us, "is not magical but practical."

THE KHMER ROUGE LEGACY:
How Then Shall We Live?

We are the victims, perpetrators and heirs of 20th century's evil incarnate - maimed, broken both in body and spirit. Everyone of us. All 14 million of us. Many of us with blood on our hands. Thirty years on, we are still living in a land thoroughly soaked in blood - haunted by the cries of our dead, by what we did or were forced to do, by what we witnessed and our hellish experiences; we have done little to wash away this stain from our environment and in our hearts; we have paid scant attention to the destructive mentality – violence, fear, impunity compounded over these many years – it produces in ourselves and visitors individually and in society collectively.

This is how the world knows us. Just eavesdrop on the expat's conversations; consider their ulterior motives, meaningless deference, condescending actions, implicit and explicit pomposity and superiority, sophisticated manipulations; ponder the humility, patience and compassion of those who visit prisoners, care for trafficked girls and AIDS/HIV-infected patients; admire the courage of those who raise awareness through films and other forms of media of human rights abuses, environmental destruction, sexual exploitation, impunity, injustices.

This is how we know ourselves. Look into the eyes of any Khmer; read the expressions on our faces; listen carefully to what we say; feel the fear, mistrust and mistreatment we have toward each other and of/by the authority; think of the self-hatred as reflected in the way we treat the most vulnerable, disregard human life, hide behind and chase after materialism, decadence, superficiality over substance and depth. Consider the greed, the selfishness in the frantic, furious grabbing of land, the heartless selling and degradation of persons.

I hear often negative superlatives attached to our current society – how it is the most vulgar, most degenerate, most cruel toward their own people, most violent, most racist, most materialistic and superficial, most shameless, most petty, most laden with gossips, back-stabbing, etc.

This is our Khmer legacy. We can deny it, or pretend it doesn't exist. We can hide it by dressing it up with pretty roads, pretty buildings, pretty clothes, pretty phones, pretty cars - with all the pretty bling-bling things of modernity. The reality remains; the blood stains are still with us; the dark mentality continues to guide us.

Do we remain indifferent and vaguely hope for change - that our society would miraculously change from one of fear to courage, impunity to justice, vulgarity to decency, violence to peace - with no efforts on our part? Yes, if we are uncaring and delusional.

How then shall we live?

The answer is not magical but practical; the answer is not unknown to us, but requires us to move from lip service to courageous action. How, then, shall we live? We must return to first principles.

Courage is not inevitable. Justice is not inevitable. Wisdom is not inevitable. Decency is not inevitable. Neither are peace, love, excellence, freedom, perseverance, character.

Each requires hard work -deliberate, persistent, persevering, humble, passionate work. And it must start with each one of us - Theary, Sophea, Chanthan, Chantha, Seila, Chariya, Cheat, Chhay, Dara, Sen, Vannath, Kheng.

The answer to fear is not more fear, but courage. We receive justice not by analyzing, witnessing, engaging in injustice, but by giving justice. We are noble not through superfluous, long empty titles, but by living with dignity and bestowing dignity to all, especially on the most vulnerable. Excellence is not had by sloth, envy but by training, perseverance, dedication.

Living Well

How then shall we live? We want to live well. We shall live well. What does "living well" look like? We must focus on and bring about the four ideals of the ancient world – Truth, Beauty, Goodness, and Unity – which address the four dimensions to life – the intellectual, the aesthetic, the moral, and the spiritual (in the sense of being connected to a purpose larger than ourselves). Where there is truth, where there is beauty, where there is goodness, and where there is unity, we Khmers of the globalized, porous world of 21st century, traumatized by the 20th century evil incarnate, may live well. (See www. csdcambodia.org "Voice of Justice Program - Leadership: To lead is to serve". Dr. Mark Strom).

Everyone of 14 million of us has an important role to play in living well. But I'd like to single out and plead with four influential groups of individuals:

Elected Leaders: Please, be our role models – full of character, justice, imbued with humility and genuine nobility. Be our model of compassion for the vulnerable, the weak, the widows and orphans – this being the hallmark of a great society.

Civic Leaders: Please, be our role models – of Integrity, unity and humility.

Parents: Please, be our role models. Invest in our education; make sacrifices for the children, for the future.

Foreign Guests: Please, do no harm. You are greatly welcomed here. But, please, do no harm, intentionally or inadvertently.

We are a generation uniquely occasioned with an awesome responsibility and opportunity – to determine and shape the Khmer Rouge legacy, positively or negatively.

How then shall we live? Let us not live darkly. Let us live well. Let us live in truth, with beauty, with goodness, in unity. Let us live with a just peace – not only a peace defined as the absence of war, but peace that includes the presence of justice. Let us live in awe of life, with a respect for life. Let us live with grace and freedom.

Theary C. SENG, former director of Center for Social Development (March 2006—July 2009), founded the Center for Justice & Reconciliation (www.cjr-cambodia.org) and is currently writing her second book, under a grant, amidst her speaking engagements.

Jesus, king of the Jews have this to say to all who will receive it:

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord."

Jesus has the power to do all that he said he will do. Call upon him to heal you now. You are accepted before him. This is the day of your salvation.

It is very demeaning to use offensive language and derogatory terms against a very smart and decent lady like Theary Seng.

I hope Theary won't pay any attention to these uncivilized comments.

Please, keep up the good work, Theary.

All the bad comments come from the CPP and Hun Sen suckers. It show how low they are. And I wouldn't be surprised if ah Meas Thes is among them.

Theary Seng said it straight to the point, it hurts them; so they as usual deflect it by attacking her personally. So shameful. Typical of many old-fashioned Khmer men.

I don't see anything wrong to post the pictures of the author having fun at the beach under this article titled "THE KHMER ROUGE LEGACY: How Then Shall We Live?".

Some people are still sad, are still haunted by their past, the lost of their loved ones, like this author did have bad experiences in her childhood life.

Many people tend to use their fake smile, or dress up glamorous or they seem to be happy people, but deepdown inside those are only to cover their sadness. They understand about sad and tragedy life (die and birth happens to each of us once only) -they look at the view, the water, the sun, etc. They try to get a life, a real life, a full life when they are still alive.

No matter how sad the person is, each of us must try to learn how to love the journey, learn to be happy, and don't think of sickness, like having brain tumor or cancer, etc., then each of us can live happily with compassion.

Only the irrational people that don't understand what life is. Life happens only when we are still alive.

As one of the reader I found some negative and irrational comments toward this author to be ignorant about what life is.

I lost my 1st cousin 19 years old to brain tumor was not detected early and I am still so sad and still disbelieve. He lost all his parents to HIV in Cambodia, and my parents brought him to the US. He was a very intelligent student and wanted to be a dentist.

All money he saved and new clothes he got during Xmas he had not wore yet. He said he will send some money to buy pigs for some poor people in Cambodia. Now he is dead, he didn't have time to do it.

That is why I support this author. She should dress and enjoy life when she is alive. Why she needs to worry about going to school anymore? She has degrees and if she desires to return to work in the State, her law degree is pretty much needed.

Get a LIFE when you are still alive.

Even with these new generation of kids on here. I'm still dumb founded that we all still degrade, name calling, and insulting each other. Mrs. Seng is doing a wonderful job. At least she is not just talking but also the walking. Unlike many of you on here taking pot shots at her can only do the talk. Just sad how we can't unite. We're basically our own disease. It won't stop til we finish killing each other.

Khmer men must learn to respect and appreciate Khmer women as equal. If we are to advance forward, we must encourage more women to take active roles in Khmer society. Belittling and demeaning them to boost up male ego will not get anywhere, but do damage to Khmer society. No wonder violence against women in Khmer society never declines. Khmer women is not a sex object. As a man, I totally object to hideous comments above, coming from hideous people, obviously. We need more Theary Seng's.

I am sure Theary will brush off these thugs's comments. Her articles address the core problems of Cambodian Nation....and what should be done to make Cambodian Nation beautiful like her pictures. Keep it up Theary...and keep striving...Cambodian Nation will once again be beautiful!

Congratulation Ms.Theary for your outstanding input. Though it is rather hyper in both expression and written language, but it usefully reflected the needs of change and positivity in Cambodia.

I do hope Cambodian younger generations will be the hope, the catalyst and the shaper of Cambodia's bright future.

Please put more effort and pave a concrete scenario to achieve the goal. Let shoulder together!

Good morning Ms. Theary,

I am your fellow Cambodian country man, who is single and happens living around Washington D.C. area. I have read many of your articles about Cambodia. Your articles are clear, precise, and to the point. You are my hero b/c you deeply care about our country, Cambodia. You critique Cambodian leaders and society to wake up and stand for individual rights in order to reconcile past tragedy and trauma. Ms.Theary, you are a leader and serve Cambodian people by setting good examples to follow. I do really admire your dedication to our country.
Ms. Theary, you are very beautiful, intellectual, and classic. You try to empower yourself and work helping Cambodia and Cambodian people. Ms. Theary, keep up good work, stay safe, and be healthy in 2010.

Sincerely,

What? Are you now relegating yourself to tell us on how to live? Some of the descriptive words that you use in your gibberish are rightly fitting yourself. It is not far off from a saying "you can't even clean your own ass because you can't even see it, too far back there"

Your credibility has already been flushed down the toilet because not long ago before you fell from grace, you were hobnobbing with these very same back stabbing foreign expatriates, kissing up to them like there was no tomorrow. Now you are bashing them in here. It is not that they are angels but just to illustrate that you are a two face opportunist. But make no mistakes that there are some expatriates who are there because they care and genuinely love the place and people. A few people here are rather naive and quite impressionable.

Gosh, these talk points have been brought up and shared by a few posters here many moons ago. They were ordinary and anonymous folks. They didn't want any credits or name recognition. So how can your views be anything new here? It could very well you picked off those folks' good points and views and just added your flowery words to them. In all honesty, may be people would look at you with a different light when you get down to your hands and knees to dig some wells, take sick and poor folks to the hospital, show kids the meaning of cleanliness to keep their habitats and neighborhoods clear of garbage; the list can go on. But you sure don't reflect that. Now, don't you rush down to take some pictures with some folks and kids just to post here and show.

Pathetic! you are a sad sack of potatoes.

Ms Theary,
There are problems everywhere in the world, not only Cambodia. United States, a country where you lived and gained education is also a corrupt nation. The financial system in America was badly corrupted that the Federal government had to bail out those banks. Who was that guy who stoled 60 billions for Wall Street? September 11 was a haox. Who destroyed the twin buildings in NY? Was it a plan that hit the Pentagon? don't be too arrogant, since you lived in the US.

Most countries retains corruptions with big or small, but they have a justice system to deal with those corruption. Idiot!

Not like Cambodia, No justice to serve and protect innocent people. Let corruption be corrupted from bottom to top.

Can't compare with other countries, idiot.

In America or European countries if one is doing a bad thing, he or she will face a jail term, but the other way around for Cambodia, Understand.

You're the more-on person who can't use your critical thinking.

At least she has a good background and a lot better than Ah Hun Sen and his lieutenants. She is an educated person not like CPP, all are peasants and low class people.

For fucking god sake, you guys yourself should wake up..you are sleeping with a fanatic dream...

This woman is afraid of January 7. Just read her previous post. That's why she is not answering At Keo's question at this moment. So she is holding it off. She is now toning down her rhetoric and align herself with CPP. She is in a kissing up mode. Why is she posting "how shall we live" now, a benign subject on the eve of this date? This is besides herself who was usually sticking it up to the man and that party. She never walked the walk and sure now ain't talk the talk either.

Like a guy said in another post is that Theary Seng is an educated professional woman, and she needs to dress up at least put some decent clothes to post under the article like this.

Don't blame the critics who made nasty comments, but blame on herself. She opens the door for them to attack her, she knows as a SRP's supporter she or every SRP's supporters will be targetted by.
