First published in February 2008 in The Phnom Penh Post as part of the Voice of Justice columns. We go from one year to another, since our nation's new birth as a democracy in 1993, with the hope that our "leaders" would learn from the past and provide us opportunities to also learn from the past and move away from it. But each year, we are more and more dismayed as they perpetuate the fear, violence and poverty of the past, and believe we should take it with a grateful smile because they "put an end to the Khmer Rouge".
Let us put an end to this revisionist history and get two things clear:
One, it was liberation (thank you) through invasion (not "volunteer humanitarianism"). With physical occupation for the next decade (leading to international sanction and the radical K5 Plan - a brainchild of General Le Duc Anh - killing unknown, unremembered tens of thousands; arrested by the collapse of the Soviet Union) and mental occupation to this day. (Why the chicanery and obfuscation surrounding the pulling out of a few illegal border posts in the middle of rice fields of Khmer farmers leading to the breathtaking measure of re-stripping the opposition leader of his parliamentary immunity, his arrest warrant, and the draconian arrests of innocent Svay Rieng villagers only trying to protect their homes? Why Vietel, owned by the Vietnamese military, is given arguable treasonous privileges in the sensitive telecommunications sector? Is it true Vietel bypassed the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications? Why call it a national airline when it's really owned and controlled by Vietnam?)**
Two, the Khmer Rouge regime has ended, yes, but not the KR mentality of leadership. If so, then please, do not obstruct the work of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal to try the additional very reasonable 6 more suspects.
** A word of caution to us Cambodians with regards to our ugly language toward each other, the Vietnamese people and others: They want to live peacefully just like you and me. Please stop the ugly language. Their condescension and racial slurs against us cannot, do not justify similar treatment. Also, the ugly language makes it more difficult for individuals like Sam Rainsy, Rong Chhun, Son Soubert and other human rights activists to raise serious legitimate concerns on the very real problem of territorial encroachments and the deep grievances of landless villagers. Our anger should be directed at our "leadership" and the policies which have created this oppressive environment, not at the innocent people who are only trying to live. I am deeply proud to know that my parents gave refuge to their Vietnamese neighbors during the pogroms of the early 1970s, most shamefully ordered by General Lon Nol. (I intentionally chose this photograph to accompany this column because I've been told I look 'Vietnamese' and I think Vietnamese women are beautiful - so, thank you for the compliment!) Remember how we felt when we were mistreated as refugees; let us not perpetuate the same madness. We should follow the example of Martin Luther King, Jr.: "I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear."
In this culture where we worship money, brute power, materialism, where form, posturing and external appearance pass for dignity and meaning, it should not be surprising then if society defines "success"—through words or action—as the pursuit and obtainment of these things.
However, permit me to be a social contrarian and posit alternative, less glamorous perspectives.
Success is the ability to see things in their true light. It is to know that one's worth derives not a cent from another's derision and even less from another's praise. To accept the latter is to accept it at the full venom of the former. Clarence Darrow states it another way: one shouldn't take either gratification or disappointment too seriously.
Rather, success is the realization of one's inherent value as drawn solely, completely in being made in the image of God. It is the ability to discern strength in gentleness and kindness and the courage to pursue them.
Success is the integrity to stand up to injustice and say "Enough!" at the expense of one's reputation and well-being. In speaking truth to power, mental poise shields one from the spin doctors and all other machinations of character assassination because one's actions are not guided by the opinions of the fickle and gossip-prone public; rather, a reasoned conscience directs one's path.
Success is longsuffering. It is a virtue that is obtained only through the actual experience of waiting. Amidst the waiting hope dwells. Twinned to long-suffering (or patience) is forbearance, the ability to show mercy and love amidst being wronged.
St. Augustine, in The City of God (Book I, Chapter 9) speaks of suffering. "... the fire which makes gold shine makes chaff smoke; the same flail breaks up the straw, and clears the grain... Thus, the wicked, under pressure of affliction, execrate God and blaspheme; the good, in the same affliction, offer prayers and praises. This shows that what matters is the nature of the sufferer, not the nature of sufferings. Stir a cesspit, and a foul stench arises; stir a perfume, and a delightful fragrance ascends. But the movement is identical."
Success is the refusal to succumb to one's circumstances. But success is more than the refusal to succumb. It is living with passion, with exuberance, with meaning.
Success is to let go of the past, to live in the present, and to build for the future. Certainly, it is important to know and learn from history. However, I see Cambodians' inclination to dwell on the past counter-productive in two ways.
First, we Khmers euphorically and intently focus on the glory of the Angkor period and pay scant attention on working in the present and future. Don't misunderstand me; I am first among Khmer admirers. But let us not be trapped by past illusions; there's much work to be done presently that requires our full mental exertion.
Second, we Khmers are psychologically scarred by the evil unleashed by the Khmer Rouge. Let us face this dark period of history straight-on—by seeing it for what it is, dealing with it privately, and holding the perpetrators to justice publicly. Let us not see ourselves as victims of past evils to justify our present state of malignity; we need not be the products of our environment; the ability to love is always within us. We need to want it, to reach for it. It hurts my ears to hear the oft-repeated justification for corruption, "In Cambodia, one must learn to flow with the meandering river in order to survive and get anything done."
Success is to be sure-footed and not wince in the face of intimidation. It is to realize that intimidation is nothing other than insecurity disguised as authority. Success is freedom of the soul. It is to chip away at that overwhelming sense of hopelessness imposed by poverty, by tradition, by social expectations, by institutions, by history, by unjust laws, by one's own self.
Life functions on two levels simultaneously, on a social and an individual plane. On the social level, institutions and laws proscribe our activities. Individually, our mind proscribes our limitations.
It is disingenuous to think that our individual choices are not informed by societal laws and institutional constructs, in particular, as beneficiaries of these laws. Alternatively, it is as disingenuous to ignore the uniqueness and ability of each individual to make choices and be held accountable for his choices.
We must be held accountable for the choices we do make, but we must also be mindful that not every choice has the same quality.
Theory must be tempered with reality, justice with mercy.
This should be a sobering reminder to all of us who too easily believe that we have achieved all by our own individual merit.
This said, the external environmental factors do shape the development of one's mind, but they do not necessarily have to be proscriptions absent the individual's permission.
Freedom of the soul finds root in this mental poise.
Success deletes from one's thinking that 'philosophy of the stop sign'. No. Don't. Can't. Yield.
Success moves one from self-pity and envy to gratitude.
Success is the training of the mind to meditate on what is praiseworthy, excellent, right, true, pure, lovely, admirable, and noble.
It is to understand that the pursuit of these qualities takes place .in the shadow of appearances, posturing, and the aggressiveness of every day commonalities.
Because things are not what they seem, generosity of spirit and love must be present at all times, but they must exist within a definite boundary. Growth of character corresponds with the ability to ever expand this boundary. Let others call it naiveté, but naiveté functions in ignorance with no boundary. At some point in time, enough is enough and it must be called.
Success is to know and not care whether someone else knows that you know. It has no room for pride.

One point please: Theary talks about not using "our ugly language"? What does she mean by that? What does the term "UGLY LANGUAGE" mean? Khmer language is never ugly, if Theary thinks that our Khmer language is "ugly" while her Vietnamese-look alike beauty is "beautiful", then she should not be LECTURING the Cambodians at all. Unless I miss her point, can someone explain what she means by the term "UGLY LANGUAGE"? I don't get it.
Theary Seng is a great writer and philospher.
To 11:13 AM, "ugly language" means nasty words, people using offensive or inappropriate terms to describe others or things. Theary ddidn't mean to say Khmer language is an ugly language.
Theary Seng,
Are you still unemployed now or are you looking for a job with CPP? No chance girl! You have a big mouth and Hun Sen does not like it.
Congratulations Lauk Srey Theary.
You're one of the best of the new Khmer Generation.
A real "Tumpeing snun Russey "
Cambodia & its People needs a real Daughter like you who has a heart for her !
Theary Seng,
Great comments but I think it would be better to keep your comments in focus, in short.
Make success all, but, impossible when the country's leadership is corruption, nepotism, untrained, unmotivated uneducated and clinging on power, sleeping and depending only the foreign aide...
like king and cpp and its clique.
How can I blame Cambodian government when Cambodian government is a Vietnamese puppet government since 1979?
Since 1979 there are between 4 to 5 million Vietnamese illegally enter Cambodia to take residency and they even allow to own land and have Khmer citizenship and to form their own communities and association all over Cambodia under AH HUN SEN Vietnamese puppet government! But can the Khmer have same things as Vietnamese who are living in Cambodia who enjoy more right and privilege than the Khmer who are living in Vietnam such as the Khmer Krom? The answer is no!!! So is this not a form of racial discrimination by the Vietnamese government?
By the way not all Cambodian people have the same experience like Theary Seng and if she is talking about racial discrimination and she need to look deep into Cambodian history first before speaking like expert on racial discrimination!
It is the Vietnamese themselves who instituted racial discrimination by oppressing the Khmer especially the Khmer Krom who are living in Vietnam! Tell me what is the different between the Khmer who are living in Vietnam and the Khmer who are living under a Vietnamese puppet government? I will tell you that there is no different here! If the Khmer experience racial discrimination in Vietname and the Khmer will also experience racial discrimination under the Vietnamese puppet government too!
A word of caution to Theary Seng that "look" can be deceiving! A good plastic surgeon can turn an Asian looking face into a European looking face! And even dark skin color can be lightening up with chemical to have a fair looking skin! Short people can be made taller by operation called " 'bone stretching'. It may be beautiful to you but not to other people!
Success is how you feel! If you don't feel successful than you are not successful!
One thing I want to be clear on Viet Came to live on Khmer's lands. was by robbing, killing our Khmers for the lands.
The Viet had moved in to Khmer's lands eligaly. Before you want to say a nice thing about this. Can we Khmers do the same thing to the Viet and not get kill?
In America only a few thousand lives had dies and a few buildings had calaped by the terrorist and the whole American are chasing after the evils, but not Cambodia which is different, we Khmers have been Killed and robbed our lands by the Viet more than a haft of the country, yet we are still asleep.
Wake up you Dumb asses. Insulting is not equale to have been robbed or kill by Evils Viet.
Good going Theary! Only a handful of Khmer can be like you.
11:13 AM,
You are absolutely missed her point!

---------
if you can not understand this very simple point, then this is the very reason why Cambodian's fail to debate serious matters..
"ugly language" does NOT mean she is putting down khmer language. if you need to understand what "ugly language" is, read the man post here and many khmer web sites.
break out of this mentality or we will never earn the respect we deserve.
"Ugly language" can be anything that is condescending or derogatory including racial slurs. In other words, "ugly language" is the most abused vocabularies in the English language :=)
language = "a system of words and phrases used by a large community or by a people, a nation, or a group of nations."
By "ugly language" I think Theary is referring "bad words". I just hope that Theary does not think that the native Khmer terms such as "YOUN, Lieu, Siem, Chen, Kleng, Cham, Barang, etc" are bad words. Hahah. Another example to think about is the classroom rules a parent would get at the beginning of any school year. One of the stipulated rules in any particular classroom standards include this: "Do not use bad language." Used in this context, the term language refers to the different languages used in the classroom of diversed population. Mexican kids call Asian kids as "Chino Chino" and pull their eyes back.
Thank you, Ms. Theary. Very great.
Dear Theary:
It's not the Viet that angered Khmer nation,it's Viet mentality and greed that individual Khmers despised.
I do hope you know what you preached here.
Just like what was echoed before in a previous post, here is hypocrisy in plain sight. She can't even clean her own derrier and yet she insists on preaching it to others. Here is a proof exerted from her own writing here of her double standard.
"Second, we Khmers are psychologically scarred by the evil unleashed by the Khmer Rouge. Let us face this dark period of history straight-on—by seeing it for what it is, dealing with it privately" Note the last phrase "dealing with it privately".
As you see, she implores others to deal with their pains and losses in private. But not for her, she had the audacity to come out with her book published in 2005 entailing her account of ordeals during Khmer Rouge years that she personally went through. The book's title was "DAUGHTER OF THE KILLING FIELDS,ASREI’S STORY" Again this woman is nothing but an opportunist, hypocrite, self serving, out there to seek a name for herself on the back of other Cambodians and hording others' generosities. Why did she want others not to come out telling the world of their own plights and pains? May be she did not want their plights to over shadow her own pity seeking account. However, I do agree that we should deal with our pains among ourselves in our own ways. Be strong and don't project it outward publicly because some of these foreigners would think that we seek pity from them. They would poke fun at us behind our backs. In truth, we seek accountability, justice, and understanding. We have to speak out and let these foreigners know wherein some of whom were perpetrators and instigators of the deaths, destruction, and suffering in Cambodia and Southeast Asia as a whole of their crimes. They do have much accountability and responsibilities to up hold.
What a pot of crock from this woman!
yes, cambodia needs enlightment. yes, isolation and ignorance is the real enemies of cambodia and its people, really. think about what's going on in cambodia!
nobody can claim that they know everything as education is an on-going part of life, really!
To 10:36PM...10:37PM
You tell that to AH Hun Sen Vietcong puppet government.
Tell me who take away the freedom of expression and the freedom of assembly from dirt poor Cambodian people?
Dirt poor Cambodian can be poor but they don't have to be poor in the mind!
Vietnameses own Tonlesap.
Vietnameses own Angkorwat.
Vietnameses own CHAM-KAR-KAO-SOU.
Vietnameses own Khmer government airway.
Vietnameses own everything in Cambodia.
That is Vietnamese peace.
have you ever heard of the bully? bully only picks on the weak and the vulnerable, however, if you show them you are smart and can stand up for yourself, then they will go away or leave you alone, really! same concept in cambodia, really! wake up, people!
To 11:14PM
I am not afraid of a bully! It is a bully with a gun who doesn't pick and choose his target and he is a happy trigger just to have his way!
11:13 AM,
"Ugly languages" this author means "vulgar languages" such as insulting or cursing, for instance
"ah.me choy m'ray" or "mother fucker" in English or any other languages that considered as not civilized languages.
Since Khmers this day are mostly mixed from many uncivilized tribes such as Yuon tribe, Chen tribe, India tribe, Arab tribe, Barang tribe, it is hard to practice the ancient rich civilization.
And another thing, more and more of Rainsy's supporters using these "bad languages" than others.
Rainsy is a very god man, but many of his supporters in KI are barbaric people.
This is because KI always encourages and open the door for them to use those languages. If KI is "not a professional blogger" itself and why do we expect the visitors to be one?
My advice to the author to not care about these barbaric people, just focus on what is important for Cambodia she thinks is good, then people will recognize it later, if not these barbaric people, outsiders will.
I completely agree with Poster 1:52. The YOUNs are/were the ONES who enacted the institutional racism against the Khmer people, Khmer customs, and Khmer culture. Remember, Troung Minh Mang? Remember 1979 Vietnamese invasion and the Viets refused all international organizations to come help the displaced dying Cambodian people affected by famines? Look at the present-day YOUN's treatment of the people of Kampuchea Krom? Yes, the YOUNs they are and were the RACISTS against the Khmer folks from the past until the present. Let us never forget about it. This is not about religious forgiveness such as the saying goes: "If another person slaps you on one cheek, you must forgive the person and let your other cheek be slapped also." What the hell? This is about human dignity and we all must stand up to any of the injustices against the Khmer people.
Another definition of Success is: Having food and raiment, let us therewith be content. For we brought nothing into this world, neither will we take anything out of this world when we die.
It is better to go into the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.
Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.
This is the right life perspective for all men. Less they become conceited in their own wisdom and power and become corrupted in their pride.
Concerning bad language, Sam Rainsy specifically asked that people should be civil and not use foul words. Foul words corrupt good manner.
I once thought that experiences can teach many of us. However, now I am convinced that no matter how bad experiences ones had gone through if he/she is arrogant the experiences ones had gone through mean nothing. You can spend time and time again to remind the person but at the end he/she does the thing that once again brings more destructions and vanish to ones self. The destructions of Cambodia is not anyone's fault but its people themselves. Countless lives sacrificed to bring about justice, democracy, and normality, at the end its leaders put the whole country on the platter to give it to youn..and not a majority does anything. Ask youself why? How come? The answer to that question is self destruction is more harmful to once self than anything else...
Cambodian Vietcong puppet leaders choose greed over morality to self-destruction for themselves and Cambodia!
It happens all the time when Cambodian leaders have enough information to make the right decision but they fail to do it!
Why is it Cambodian future generation have to undo the bad decision of the previous generation? Why! Is this the tradition of Cambodian culture for Cambodian leaders to behave like this? This is the very reason why Cambodian people continue to struggle to find the answer and the solution! Until there is a solution to the problem and only then the struggle and the fighting and the discussion among Cambodian people will stop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
11:17AM,
If you are not a monkey, you would probably dot see Theary Seng as a great writer and philosopher.
Theary Seng, I cannot stop using "ugly language" against ah Yuons as long as ah Yuons are still stealing parts of Khmer land. I am one of the Khmers who want my country to be free of annexation by ah Yuons and ah Thais.
When she said ugly languages, she probably meant curse words and racial slurs.
hey, here's my two cents: when one learns another language, sometimes literal or straight interpretation never make sense. for example, take the phrase "so long", when i first learn english, i used to look up every words in english that i don't know or don't understand, so, naturally, i looked up the words "so long". from what i know, so and long mean something else, however, when we use the phrase, it mean good bye. well, my point is, yes, in english, "ugly language" mean like everyone was saying above; in short, it just another words for name-calling, swearing, etc... understand now? it is always better to ask the educated native speakers when you try to learn a foreign language but seems confuse due to the meaning in phrase form and so on...
Responding to 12:10
I too looked up the the term "ugly language" in the dictionary but found no entry for such a thing. While the term "so long" is an idiom to mean "good-bye", there is no such a term of "ugly language". There are entries for the term "uglier than sin" = very ugly; "as ugly as sin"= very ugly; "ugly duckling" = An ugly or plain child who grows up to be pretty and attractive. However, there is an online thread in the forum that discussses "The World's most beautiful/ugly language?" as follows:
What is the most beautiful language and the most ugly language you've ever heared ? Please answer, although the poll is just about the ugliest language (couldn't have 2 polls and ugliest discussion are usually more fun )
Beautiful :
1. Finnish : I really like how it sounds singy, and so alien. Raaksi kaaksi kölminen etc, just lovely
2. Japanese : They, like Finns, don't use multiple consonants which makes it sounds quite tough.
3. US English : Personally, I think it's one of the most fluent sounding languages there are.
Ugly :
1. Chinese : All the tones and nasal sounds are just too much. And they always seem to be yelling the language insteading of speaking it.
2. German : Oh, so harsh ... schweisserdeutch, even worse. I really hate their consonant mixes.
3. Arabic : It sound as if something is stuck in their throats... those trottal/glottal consonants are really ugly and weird to me.
Success!: as a nation building or as an individual driven!
If it is for and as a nation building than success should liberally defines as such mention in the quotation. However, if it is for and as an individual than it may suggestes, the approaches of success and how one may difines it may come in different phases. Hitler, Mussolini, Pol Pot, Hun Sen, Mao Zedong, and a few others...if it means to killing innocent people...in thier own words....would also mean success...just precisely Theary has described!
"Nation-building refers to the process of constructing or structuring a national identity using the power of the state. This process aims at the unification of the people or peoples within the state so that it remains politically stable and viable in the long run. Nation-building can involve the use of propaganda or major infrastructure development to foster social harmony and economic growth."
Let me get one thing straight, the only thing that Cambodia need is really Governance. Without it, no one should continue to support this nation. Especially, whey it allow Vietnam the colonist that used KR to kill off all the Khmer interlect than pretent to come rescue Khmer. This is a very old politic that still work in SEA. Also, Viet forced Cambodia to sign the 1985 treaties which was illegal for an invader to force the invaded country to sign a treaty...the 3 stooges must be removed, HS, CS & HS, notice the 3 names, Hun Sen, Chea Sim, Heng Samrin, all 3 names end with letter S. It stands for STUPID...
Thank you for lifting us to a higher plane of thinking, Theary, with your articles. They are very good.
She can't even clean her own ass.
