Cambodian leader Hun Sen wants World Court to settle border dispute with Thailand

February 9, 2010

O SVAY, Cambodia (AP) - Cambodia will complain to the World Court that Thailand is occupying its land, the prime minister said Tuesday while visiting the territory at the heart of a bitter border dispute.

Prime Minister Hun Sen said Thailand has encroached on land around the landmark Preah Vihear temple, in northern Cambodia, which the court awarded Phnom Penh in 1962.

Thailand acknowledges Cambodian sovereignty over the temple, but both claim 1.8 square miles (4.6 square kilometers) of nearby land. The countries' troops have clashed there several times.

"Cambodia has reached the limits of its patience," Hun Sen said in a speech Tuesday. He said he also would ask the United Nations to help solve the border issue.

Nationalist passions have run high at the border since 2008, after Thailand first backed, then opposed Cambodia's bid to name the 11th-century temple a U.N. World Heritage site.

Cambodia and Thailand share a 500-mile (800-kilometer) land border, part of which has never been clearly demarcated because each country relies on different maps.

Cambodian-Thai relations worsened late last year when Cambodia named former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra an adviser on economic affairs.

A Thai court in 2008 sentenced Thaksin in absentia to two years imprisonment for corruption, but Cambodia rejected a formal request for his extradition.

Nationalist passions have run high at the border since 2008, after Thailand INVADED Cambodia in Jul 2008 and the awarding of Preah Vihea as the World Heritage by UNESCO.

Cambodia and Thailand share a 500-mile (800-kilometer) land border, but Thailand drew their own map unilaterally to claim 4.6 km2.

Cambodian-Thai relations worsened after THAI TROOP tried to encroach Cambodia territory several times.

No need to bring the issue top the ICJ again... The issue was solved once and for all.... It only needs enforcement! Thai troops need to pull out or be forced out from the Preah Vihear region!

yes, cambodia should push for justice. we all know siem thugs has no way out of this illegal activity and violation of international court of justice of 1962. siem thugs will be humiliated one more time, this time once and for all. this time, we will make sure everything is spelled out in accordance to international agreement and international law, etc...! don't let siem thugs use any more excuses to steal and rob cambodia again!

He should of done this the first day the Siem thief set foot in Cambodia.

You don't negotiate nor talk to thieves, especially illegitimate government.

This is getting old. The word that was used to described HS actually right on. His words sometime very primitive, that's because the man never had any high level of education. However, he speaks from his heart of how he felt about Thai's government and it's sell-out Khmer origin people.

If you plan to take the Thai to the world court, just do it and let's get it done. Stop beating around the bush. How about the Viet/Cambodia border, let's get this issue resolve all for once as well...don't just pick and chose what border lines you wanted to fight.

I share the sentiments of everyone here! It's about time he really addressed this issue, by taking it to the International Court of Justice! Like the comments of other, he should of done it long ago and yes, take Yuon Border encroachment also to ICJ. It is far more threatening to the Territorial integrity of Cambodia. We need a competent leader now!'Hun Sen's theatrical is a good way to take the attention from Yuon Border encroachment and the unjust ruling against Sam Rainsy and the two farmers.
Please let Mr. Rainsy take over and end this suicide of Cambodia and its people!

Never, I believe it'll never taking this issue to the UN, how many time?

yes, believe it or not, world court is siem thugs' weakness! cambodia, hurry up and use the international court of justice once and for all. siem thugs will lose for sure as they have no legal ground to stand on when cambodia calls on UN security councils and icj or world court for the final time, this time for permanent settlement so siem thugs would never dream fo stealing from cambodia again, you know! stop wasting time, go the easy way by icj and UN councils, etc... war is only last resort. the world community now know about siem thugs provocation and illegal staking of cambodia territories. we have the international maps as baseline and will not afraid to use it at world court. we cannot accept siem thugs unilateral map because they drawn it to their advantage by claiming and stealing from cambodia, especially during the 1980s when we were suffering from the aftermath of stupid KR regime, etc... the same with youn side, if they steal from us , we will take them all to icj once and for all. don't let them get away so easy like during the dark ages when we saw our territories shrinking by youn and siem thugs stealing from cambodia. it's time to act now!

Good to hear that and hope Mr.Hun Sen or his government will do the same WEST and EAST.
Hope the international court will find out where is our cambodian border located both WEST and EAST...
Good luck to Cambodia!

This is the direction we should do a long time ago. Take the Thai to international court over their falsely claimed of 4.6 km2 land surrounding Preah Vihear. And our government is inclined to do so as doing so would implicate Viets as the invader from the East as well.
