Crude remarks uncalled for

10/02/2010

Bangkok Post

Prime Minister Hun Sen grabbed headlines but lost much in his unreasonable and personal outbursts. The words he used were hardly the phrases of a statesman or diplomat. It is hard to see what the Cambodian leader hoped to gain by aiming rude, personal abuse at Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva. The hard-line nationalists back home already support Hun Sen's unceasing attacks on PM Abhisit and other Thai leaders. The Thai prime minister did the right thing by ignoring the repeated and primitive verbal assaults; so it is Hun Sen who lost face.

The ex-Khmer Rouge troop commander first came to international attention in 1979, shortly after the Vietnamese invasion installed a regime friendly to Hanoi. Thus, at 27, Hun Sen gained a sort of fame as the world's youngest foreign minister. With many years in the post, it seems something of a shame that the Cambodian politician failed to learn the niceties of international diplomacy. There is no justification for using the sort of language he was quoted as using on a Cambodian website, even as he was visiting border regions.

The Khmer-language website may have been directed to Cambodians, but Hun Sen knows as well as anyone that these days, there is nothing local on the internet. In any case, his words were directed at PM Abhisit personally, as in "You are the robber" and "It is none of your business" how Hun Sen dresses. Such direct, personal and in-your-face insults would be intolerable if Cambodia and Thailand were in conflict. Under current circumstances, this disrespect for a fellow Asean prime minister says far more about Hun Sen than about PM Abhisit.

The Thai premier should continue to do what he is doing, which is handling day-to-day government work while ignoring the highly contemptible comments from his counterpart. The only possible direct reply to the low comments from Hun Sen would mean to stoop even lower. Thus, the proper reply is indirect. Relations between Thailand and Cambodia are at a low ebb, without doubt. But small numbers of misguided hotheads on both sides apart, there are thankfully no indications that any responsible officials on either side want actual hostilities.

It is troubling that Hun Sen would take advantage of the moment in this manner. He conducted a tour of part of the Thai-Cambodian border while managing to avoid provocative actions. Standing up to the stronger neighbour to the west probably won him some political support back in Phnom Penh and the provinces. But his outrageous demand to barge into Surin province with armed guards showed a lack of statesmanship. His wish on the website for "evil events to befall" PM Abhisit is diplomatically indefensible.

In many ways, Hun Sen appears determined to exploit the tyranny of the weak. This is the concept that a strong opponent must accept abuse from one which is smaller and weaker, or be seen as a bully. One hopes Hun Sen's campaign will quickly fade and not become, as the writer Oscar Wilde once proclaimed, "the only tyranny that lasts".

If Hun Sen does not feel he owes an apology - which he does - he certainly owes everyone some moderation. It is understandable that crude remarks are occasionally uttered in the heat of argument. But Hun Sen has clearly decided to take the measure of PM Abhisit and a few other officials in the most vulgar manner. He should reconsider this sort of distasteful rhetoric, which certainly fails to advance his own cause.

I condem the Thai's aggression, but I am ashamed of my Prime Minister who talk trash more than substances. Jungle man talked like a primitive ape. Hun Sen fits that perfectly. Bring the issue to the world court, ape. Stop humiliating your own nation with your trash talking.

Other hand,Abhisit Avijjajiva is a Hakka not Siam and nothing more but a stooge to serve the monarchist elites.

Bangkok Post has no clue that Siam people included Sinos,Shans Laos,Miaos, Khmers are suppressed to stay poor by one inherent corruptive and ruthless family that staged coup after coup to keep wealth to themselves.

Bangkok Post has no idea how cruel and brutal of Siam armed forces in treating refugees of all backgrounds and Muslims.

The more Hun Sen curses Thai PM, the more humiliated he is. There is noway that his words is acceptable to any person not even the leaders of any country. Deplomatic and ethical language should be used to deal with any leaders around the world regardless they are enemies or friends to us. Even more than 25 years as priminister, Hun Sen is still politically and morally imature. All Khmers who are proud of our nation, always show respect and love to people around the world; now is humiliated by Hun Sen.

No body or any country like to be invaded or have it territory encroached on my it neighbour Thailand and Vietnam over Cambodia.

But poor judgement and lack of education those or cambodian PM has been un-usefull token PHDs. It have not resulted in the same level achievement in protecting and nation building for Cambodia.

Hun Sen is strong against it own people and opposition parties but weak against Thai and Vietnam.

I think it even better if he leave this role to the younger Khmer generations.
The longer he stay in power the more disadvantage Cambodia have over it neighbour via territory Land,Sea,Air and on economic development and law enforcement..

You have the same un-educated PHDs with ranking to the moon and Star. But it mean nothing if you DON'T DELIVER RESULTS to NATIONAL INTERESTs AND NATION BUILDING.

You're like your master, Hun Sen. Talk trash as an uneducated man. You're one of them who came from the low class society and don't see the black or white. Hun Sen is uncomparable to Mr. Rainsy who is an educated man and came from the noble family. So don't be bullshit with Mr. Rainsy again and I'll take you down along with your master.

By the way If Siem wants to fight with Khmer, I suggest Khmer government should contact all Khmer living in Thailand and Kampuchea Krom and Muslim people living in the three provinces to take up arms against the Thai and Vietnam. Then we all will be freed from the aggessors. We will liberate the lost part to the motherland. But, don't count on Sihanouk and Hun Sen. Both of them are useless persons and work for Vietnam.

Sihanouk helped Vietnam to win the Vietnam war and Hun Sen helped Vietnam to get Khmer land. Therefore, both of them are treason to Khmer nation.

The words Hun Sen used were still better than the foolish Oxford graduated PM Abhisit Vejjajive tooks, by stealing Khmer temples, territories and claiming 4.6km2 of land to be a disputed land. Yes indeed with the internet age, what is written and posted will be viewed not just by the local but the whole world, so from now on maybe Bangkok Post and the Nation should write a news not an opinion and how about not be so one sided story.

abhisit use thais media to bickering and provoke war and dispute to hun sen. That’s very insane and ill from thais. Hun sen should do the same but apparently hun sen's medias are so incompetent to lead this kind of information war with other nation, just enough to trick, fool and oppress to poor Khmer people only. Think twice hun sen. Your brain is enough to fight with little child and fool poor people who have nothing to think by their own, not enough to fight on big ground. You need your own kind who capable to lead this kind of war and rival with the other nations. The siamses are not those smarts you know but you and your people are so damn that these stupid Siamese become erudite

I am from CANADA. I support PM HUNSEN 100%. Right now he goes right direction, dosn't matter his words, evrybody get mad and hate siam asshole, kill ,rape, steal KHMERS everyday.

Fighting using words to curse is not fighting. In fact, it just proves that the person is immature. If Hun Sen is strong as he says he is why don't he visit Prasath Tamuan as planned? Why change his mind the last minute? My advice to Hun Sen cursing don't make you strong but action do. Take action against both the Thai and the Viet invaders and then we will praise you for your courage, otherwise you are just chicken who curse Thai PM just to impress your ignorant people into thinking that you are strong.

8:24, Siamese people are all really blind since they respect one-eye King for long time... For People of Cambodia,Out of 8.5 millions voters, there were about 3.5 who vote for HUN SEN,CPP, and most of these voter are Yuon anyway. Therefore, talking about blinding country, Thailand must be the one.

I will raise my both arms and legs to vote for Thaksin to be a Khmer Prime Minister if Rainsy stiol cannot win. I don't want to see the barbarian KHmer Rouge in power.
